This has to be the best 'programme' about steam locomotives I've ever seen.... i.e. not just a video but a beautiful visual and calmly informative commentary on the part GWR and it's designers played developing the UK's (including other big four's) best steam locomotives. Thank you David Moyle et al.
What a great video. At 68 I'm like a ten year old sitting on the grass slopes of the railway embankment back in 1965 as the Southampton train hurtles past us in Paulsgrove on it's way downtown into Cosham and Pompey. Thanks to you all for such pleasure on the small screen.
With the white feather waving from the safety valve on a Summers day. Here's an old video of a GWR King storming up a steep bank from a standing start. It's a masterclass in how to keep a fire-breathing monster from starting to slip. The sight of her coming over the top of the bank is impressive. ruclips.net/video/xCoR0b-O9E8/видео.html
Glad to see you enjoyed the video and im pleased to see that it's popular outside of Britain too. Would like to visit Germany myself one day but financial issues plus the lack of a passport prevent that. Alas maybe one day but certainly wont be anytime soon.:p
I could almost smell the Welsh Anthracite coal as if it was yesterday and I was on the end of the platform at Cardiff General. For the life of me, I can't understand why all GWR locomotives were driven from the right hand side! Thanks for another great presentation.
Most firemen - and others, are right handed, making firing from the left side (from right to left) much easier and leaving the right space clear for the driver.
What a superbly made film.
Thank you. Very enjoyable video. Kept me entertained in a lonely hotel room!

Superb video, probably the best I've seen. Brings back memories when I worked on the railway, back in the 60s until beeching came along. 😊
Fantastic
Great photography and audio.
To watch these magic machines and get background As well!
Thanks again
Love GWR. Grew up with them.
Just marvellous. Thank you.
As an American, I would say that the Pere Marquette Berkshire has a sharper bark than the Kings. But the Kings are nothing short of amazing.
Awesome video!
If there's anything more thrilling than a King racing along at speed, I don't know what it is.

5224, used to fire that engine on coal trains from Neath Shed, Neath Jct to Severn Tunnel during 1959.
Note GWR contempt for engine men, the seat you wouldn't put into a garden shed. So all Western men stood almost all time on while working.
Wow...these "old horses" are amazing. Thanks for your really cool movie. Greetings from Germany. LuBi

@@mikeevans2146@mikeevans2146 Thank you; much appreciated.
Sturrock had been a GW man and took to the Great Northern the idea of a wide BG (Broad Gauge) firebox. This went eventually into the GN Atlantics.
The mighty Castle far mighty than any other regions locomotives
I drove and fired 3205 on the south Devon railway in 2014
Sad to think that 3205 has an uncertain future now as it needs major work including an almost new boiler alongside a new cylinder block.
