  • There have been some amazing advances in caring for hearts, however, despite all of these advances we still lose far too many people suddenly in the prime of their life. A 2014 study suggested that 4 out of 5 heart attacks may be prevented by eating healthy, exercising, not smoking and maintaining a normal waistline. When New Bedford was recognized as one of the least healthy cities in Massachusetts to grow older, Dr. Michael Rocha laced up his sneakers and became more of a coach than a doctor with a prescription for a community to walk, eat healthy, laugh often and live now.
Michael Rocha is a cardiologist with Hawthorn Medical Associates, LLC and is the Director of Heart Failure Services at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford where he is working to change to the perception from Heart Failure to Heart Wellness. After seeing patients with preventable heart disease in his community, he seized the opportunity to help improve the health and well-being of his hometown of New Bedford beyond just prescriptions. He started the New Bedford Wellness Initiative as a monthly wellness walk that has grown quickly since the first walk in April 2014.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

We completely agree with you Dr. Rocha. As much as there is great technological advancement that gives us the chance to help us from our heart killing us, great lifestyle and the choices we make are really important factors that would definitely help us in preventing our own heart from taking our own life away. Prevention is always better than cure. Eating healthy and balanced meals are important to help our bodies absorb nutrients to stay healthy. Managing stress is also important because this really does affect different aspects of our lives. This video is a must watch, especiall for people our age as it discusses amazing tips that help in healthy aging as well. Thank you so much Dr. Rocha, you have given us so much tips to stay healthy and happy, just like the health and wellness coaches of Reviving Mind.

Think more about Quality of foods than quantity:
    Eat Whole Foods
    Limit or eliminate processed foods
Eat a variety of whole plant foods, Vegetables, Fruits, Whole Grains, Legumes, a little nuts/seeds.
And exercise, even 20 minutes a day, can help, as he said.
PS: it will also reduce your risk of Alzheimers (Source: „Power Foods for the brain“, TEDxtalk from Dr. Neal Barnard)

@El Jay Now I am preparing the top 3 things to eat/do/avoid for a healthy heart but I am a bit confused about oils. Some doctors say some oils such as olive oil is great whereas some other experts say its bad. I am a bit confused. Do you have any information about this?
So far I made this much. I am researching though. I am making this top 3 because its easier to follow than having 100 good foods.
      Exercise
      Morning Walk - 10,000 steps
      Laughing
      Sleep 8 hours
      Eating Food
      Spinach
      Fruits
      Pomegranate
      Mental
      No arguments
      Limit
      Sugar
      Dairy
      Oil

When he meets the behavioral and spiritual therapist who also knows Martial arts, he sounds a lot like the man Morgan meets in season 6 of the walking dead. You just have to see it to know what I'm talking about. If you know what I'm talking about it's spot on
Edit: it's season 6 episode 4. Titled here's not here.

All these treatments but yet Arrhythmia's still seem to little advancement. Ablations that may or may not work, medications that sometimes help but have terrible side affects. The heart is an amazing organ but when will we start to cure issues instead of mask them and bring back quality of life to so many.

Not always. Some heart diseases are congenital, I have a valve prolapse and it increases my risk for heart attack and stroke. Scary stuff! Life is really boring when you're young and being heart healthy tho 😂
