    now I understand - what the lute, it is music and lyrics at the same time, it is a song that you can not sing, but only touch the strings, a unique tool, unique music!

      Polyphony on a solo stringed instrument tends to be like this. You play multiple tunes at once, often implying the progression is still playing while you're playing another.
      Downland was a master in this, as were many of his contemporary composers that composed for the lute or vihuela for that matter.

      @@nextlifeonearthThe big Dowland fantasias are, perhaps, the best advertisement for the lute's abilities. Try this, the great Paul O'Dette, from 1:05 (just over an hour in). Wonderful writing.
