In my teen years I was very scared of rejection and it really messed with my self esteem , and as a guy I didnt know how to deal with it I just took as a "Im a weak gent and I got to toughen up". The problem with this show is not cause by the fact that people think that everyone is disposable. It's the consequence of 2 things. First, people don't like being rejected, and second, people are guided by there first impression (or feeling) , which include physical attractiveness and perceived status or group identity.

Nobody likes being rejected, you can say you don't care, but deep down inside it hurts, especially for someone who may had been repeatedly rejected before or otherwise has insecurities. Ideally, we take rejection as a normal, neutral thing, some people will love us some will hate us, understanding we can't be people pleasers nor win them all, but in reality we struggle with it and rejecting others before they reject you is a defense mechanism that can escalate to something destructive.
