      @@TheNomadicCrobot I had to buy one several years ago because we lose power quite often from storms. Granted it's small but it's enough to run the fridge and a couple of lights. That gets us through a couple of days until the power returns, but downsides are the constant noise for hours on end, even with the unit outside, and the fuel thirst, having to full it up every few hours.

    Get a load of solar on the roof soon pay for it’s self believe me you will moor for a few days even if only to avoid bad weather. I started with 300watt then added another then another panel so have 900watt have a fridge and a freezer. Nine months of year no problem now. Generators smelly fuel and storing the thing better running engine. The expansion vessel should be tee into the cold water supply. Plus fit a one way valve in the cold water supply pipe to stop the hot water going back up the cold water pipe lots do not do this but we were getting hot water in the bathroom at cold water tap. Becks you’re doing a great job.

    Well done Bex 👍
    Bad moves Chris, a cheap generator can be very noisy, annoying people and can be very heavy to lug on and off your boat. We invested in three solar panels and it's the best thing we have done to create electricity from the inverter all day, especially in Summer. If we didn't need hot water we wouldn't have to run our genny for an hour every evening in Summer, but we can also run our Gardner engine to charge the batteries and provide hot water. or turn on the immersion heater. Trial and error whichever way you get results 👍
    It's all a learning process what results you achieve 👍

      @TheNomadicCrobot  2 месяца назад

      yes it looks like the geni is going to be more trouble than its worth, I full solar setup will save us in the long run...can you imagine me trying to install it though??? 😂😂

    • @janroberts1815
      @janroberts1815 2 месяца назад

      @@TheNomadicCrobot If you have space on the roof, the more solar panels you can fit is the best idea, even in winter with good UV it can charge your batteries for the inverter and you can charge your batteries by running your engine.
      The key to sucess is to have alternative charging sauces, solar panels, engine or generator, but if you are constantly on the move lugging a generator on and off would be a pain.
      Tell Bex to RUclips fitting solar panels, she could do it 👍

    The best place for the generator is going to be on the roof, because the emissions from the exhaust are potentially very dangerous. Also make sure to have a carbon monoxide detector installed and functional on the boat. Long-term, you’re probably going to want a couple of pretty decent output, solar panels. If you don’t care about roof space usage, you could get several large panels and hook them up to two separate inverters so you have a fallback in case there’s a problem or if you only need a little bit of charge input. As far as the expansion tank goes, you’re going to want to get another long strap jubilee clip because the changing temperatures will affect the plastic over time and it could get loose. I would also look to see if there’s a muffler kit for that generator make, and model to reduce the noise. Looking good so far! Hope you can make the swap over to solar sooner rather than later!

    Chris,you do need to be careful about the generator,if you have to raise your voice in order to be heard next to it then it’s probably going to be over 90db,anyone who complains about the noise,you will need to switch it off completely,otherwise you can get done by the environmental agency !!.
    Now you can get Silent generators ( Power Networks and Water Companies use them in Residential Areas ).
    There are also ones that are used by Network Rail which are super silent and designed to output a huge amount of power,these generators and lighting tower gennys are stolen quite often 🤷‍♂️.
    Plus when they are old they are scrapped.
    DO NOT get a Cheap Chinese made Diesel Heater……Webasco are the best and they even make some that not only heat the Air but can also be plumbed in to Heat Water

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 2 месяца назад +1

      Yep. Generators are too damn loud. On a narrow boat it will be terrible. Just put solar panels on the roof. Free energy all the time! I live on a new build estate and a few summers ago a fish and chip van/trailer started turning up, and pitching on the grass across from my home. Friday and Saturday nights. He had a generator outside the trailer van on the ground, running constantly. It sounded like a motorbike! I could hear it in the house, with windows and doors shut across the road from him! People closer it was worse. So many complaints in the end the council stopped him and moved him on etc. Generators are for an emergency or a fair ground. Thats it.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  2 месяца назад

      thats interesting alot of people really talk highly of the heaters. maybe its something that needs a bit more attention. generator wise I feel it may be more trouble than. its worth...I was just trying to think of ways to get moving quicker as its been such a long journey

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 2 месяца назад +1

      @@TheNomadicCrobot Yes I can understand that. But solar will work to a degree on dark cloudy days, all the time. Get some large panels, cover the roof in them and they will trickle charge all day long. There are plenty to chose from for mobile homes etc. Use LED lighting as much as you can too. You will forever be looking for fuel for a generator. The noise, the fumes...and it kept keeling over when you plugged a kettle etc in! Not good. Price of Fuel now, having to keep cans of it around on the boat or to get to a diesel pump...I would not even dream of a generator like that on a narrow boat your size. The vibration and the noise will drive you nuts, never mind anyone else....

    • @moffatt43
      @moffatt43 2 месяца назад +1

      @@TheNomadicCrobot You can get quiet generators but what you need to know is that the small suitcase type ones use a lot of Fuel…..Like 4-5 litres in a few hours and with the cost of petrol and the problem with storage of the fuel as well ( don’t forget that there is a reason why boats tend to have Diesel engines,they are safer 🤷‍♂️ ).
      I think it’s a case of you either get a good cheap Chinese diesel heater or you get a bad one,some people think they are brilliant but others have had bad experiences with them,Webasco are the most expensive ones and they are the most reliable,plus if you need parts for the Webasco ones you can get them and not have to wait 6 weeks and end up paying £76 in customs charges 🤷‍♂️.
      And if you fit a diesel heater it is only good for small spaces really ( they are great in HGV’s and Cars because of the smaller area they have to heat up ).
      If you Did fit one you would need a high power outage one and fit some sort of ventilation pipe work and you would need booster fans to ensure that the heat is dissipated throughout the entire length of your Boat 🤷‍♂️.
      If you think about one of those tiny little ones and how much heat it puts out but think about the volume of hot air you are going to need to heat your boat, it will be working extremely hard all the time just to heat up a few cubic feet of space ( I’m just saying that as a example ) but imagine how hot it has to be an how hard it would need to work to get hot air from the stern to the bows ?!!.
      It can be done but normally the Hot Air Heating system and A/c ducting is put in when the Boat is being built.
      It’s run behind the skirting board with booster fans and vents every few feet,I’m wondering if you have ever thought about Heat Exchangers ? They can come in small units and they can be used for Heating and Cooling ( A/C ),the only downside is the need for a Quite large fan outside ( about the size of a Large Suitcase ).
      There is a couple up North who are rebuilding Sarinda ( an old ex Navy ship ),Simon and Gemma and their Main Line of work is the renovation and making Vans into RV and camper type Vans….. I’m sure they would have some very good ideas and information on heating of a Boat and the best way to go about it,they would probably have the details of lots of people who supply equipment etc as well for boats and camper vans ( they built a Camper Van for a Chap who goes to the Isle of Man TT and in his camper he had a quite big generator that he would need for all his racing/tool/charging of batteries etc.
      Oh and they know a hell of a lot about Solar power as well and how to fit it and where to get it from.
      Don’t go down the route of cheap Chinese knock offs though Chris and Bex…. Webasco are pretty amazing units and like I said, you even have units that keep the engine coolant/water at a reasonable temperature when it is freezing outside.
      Oh and the digital thermostat and controller is in English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿!!!!!

    Becky. You should lubricate the plastic fittings with water at least, to prevent twisting or distorting the rubber O ring inside it, on insertion of the pipe.
    Also, the metal pipe inserts are to strengthen the plastic pipes at the joints to prevent flexing and kinking, not to seal the ends.

      You could get 1 solar panel (300w for around £80) and and a cheap solar charge controller.
      Mount the panel on the roof and connect it to the charge controller which is connected to the batteries and presto you're good to get out cruising for the summer months.
      Do you have an alternator for your leisure batteries?

  • @timothybearne147
    @timothybearne147 2 месяца назад

    If you have no solar or generator then you'll probably have to run the engine for a couple of hours a day to charge the batteries, assuming you have the inverter on for about 8 hours per day. If you're cruising most days, that's no big deal really. To get the most out of the calorifier, one of you take a shower an hour into a cruise then the other an hour later, and at the end if you've cruised for 3 hours or more, you'll still have plenty of hot water.

    Generators = Noise, Flammable Petrol to be stored onboard, Smell from Exhaust and Petrol - Generally (no pun) and they don't last long. Not good!
    Solar Panels - Quiet, Clean, No running costs, totally controllable BUT if the batteries you are charging are Lead/Acid they do have a tendency to BOIL them. Using AGM Gel or Lithium LiFePO (Light weight/Smaller/Consistent Output) and a Good Quality Charger/Controller - Brilliant
    If you know nothing about Solar, speak to Eco-Worthy who sell a vast range of Panels, Controllers, Inverters if you want 230volts, And other bits and bobs. I prefer Solar for my camper van, works well (in the sun - if available).

    Get a split charge relay (voltage sense relay) for your batteries. They are a very simple way to link your house batts to your existing starter batt charge system, without modifying it. When the engine is running and the voltage comes up on the start batt, the relay will kick in and connect your house batteries. Then when the engine stops, and the voltage drops, the relay drops out, isolating your house batts from the system.
    Also, those chineseium diesel heters are excellent. I have one heating my quite big workshop. Just as good as the wabasto ones for 1/10 of the cost. And so cheap you can carry a complete spare as backup.
