#1. Walk through bathroom with the doors being able to open for more room or close for toilet privacy.
#2. If at all possible locate the calorifier upright and and anywhere else but not under the bed.
#3. Install hydraulic lifters under the bed to lift the mattress and the perforated wood it sits on.
and the most important step in anything that's to be done on the boat . . . 'Let Becca do it!'
Take care, be well, keep warm ~ Lacy, Mike & Hamish🤗💖🐾
It seams a walkthrough will be the way to go, its such a small bathroom as it is, also the upright calorifier is the way were pushing towards.woaw a hydraulic lift sounds like a much better idea than these silly rope things we have .your right....I think ill let Becca do it 😂😂 Take care guys have a lovely week ❤️
Go for the more spacious walk-through bathroom. How often will there be anyone but you two aboard anyway? AND install the calorifier vertical and build the spare bunk over the top, will make lots more storage space under that bunk AND who really needs to sit-up in bed?
Hi Terry hope your well? I think the walkthrough bathroom could be the way to go alot more room, and Bex actually thinks it will be easier to install than to rebuild the old one.I think vertical will be the way to go too...it will just sit in a bit nicer
Hi You Two! What you are using for your bed should be the Dinette ( which normally can be converted to a guest bed) and what Chris calls the snoring room should be the bedroom
Hello! Yes you are absolutely right. I think at some point in the boats history, someone converted the dinette area into a bed. We have talked about returning it to it's former glory but the advantage is we have more beds for if people stay and we also have enough room in the lounge to create another dining area. We will keep mulling it over though 😊 Thanks for your comment!
@@TheNomadicCrobot If you do replace the dinette just think, in the summer !!! mornings you can have the hatch open and be serenade by the ducks and swans, also in the evenings when having a meal👍
She right...few and far between...but also...you can still go thru - just less privacy. But the space it allows more than makes up
yes I think to go bigger may be the right choice , Thanks
Cheers for the mention guys, you made us blush. Ady is going into hiding once we are back out on the cut lol. Walk through bathroom works for us and feels like we have loads of space. We've just got back from India and had you on a big screen while we were there so think you may have gained a few new Indian subscribers. 👍
Any time you lovely lot, you made a really great video that really made the process alot easier to take in, now just to get Bex do her thing 😂 Yes I think the walkthrough will probably be the best option..especially as our compost loo uses up so much space 😂 Thank you so much for the support, good luck on your adventures
👍👍👍@@TheNomadicCrobot
Hi bexs and Chris hope you are both keeping warm, after a week and a half of none stop Nomadic Cobot I've caught 141 episodes so funny can't wait till you are on your continuous cruise hope you make it to the black country
Bless you sand Thank you so much for the support, we cant wait to get cruising...hopefully it will bring a whole new dimension to the channel , have a lovely week
Hi Chris n Bec, I would go for the Jack and Jill style bathroom, it maximises space and separates the boat in 2 which is great if you have guests staying over. I find the off corridor bathroom rather claustrophobic as is the corridor as both are off centre. As a tall person I find myself stooping. I fit swing self closing louvered doors with locks on the bathroom side, it works fantastic and would never go back to an off corridor bathroom again!
Thats a very interesting take, thanks for your advice, we really need the bathroom to be larger...its got very small since having the compost loo
I got this from Living on A Narrowboat: “In a horizontal calorifier the distance between top and bottom of the cylinder is quite small so the incoming cold water ‘spoils’ the outgoing hot water quite quickly. In a vertical calorifier the distance between bottom (cold) and top (hot) is far greater so you ‘appear’ to get more hot water.”
Thats so interesting a few others have pointed out that vertical is the way to go, Thank you
Buy a boat they said, cruise canals they said, it'll be FUN they said!
I hope you get it together soon. My time as a liveaboard was some of the best life so far
Haha!!! DIY is fun...right... 😂😉 Aww thanks so much, we are so looking forward to it when it comes around ☺️
Sure you will work out the bathroom glad you both ok keep warm safe n well till next time the oldies 👍👍🤗🤗
Thanks so much 😊 We hope you are both ok too!
Calorifier thingy upright in a water proofed boxed in area with a small ladder up to a captain type bed with storage underneath.
it seams we will probably be keeping it upright at the end of the extra bed, Than you Louise
AND, someone mentioned pocket doors for your bathroom - very good idea. James (of the NB that he built) made his own and made that look easy, although precise measuring needed.
Nobody puts Captain Chris's practical input into question, not on my watch, the mans a born supervisor a natural!👨🏻✈.....🤣
exactly 😂😂😀
She’s got a good idea, but I’d take it a step further. Turn it into a wet bath. On both sides where you walk through you would have a 2” (5cm) rubber strip or half of a “pool noodle” along the bottom a wall so it create a waterproof seal. You would have plenty of “leg room” when you need to “sit down”. Also you shower be as wide as the Wombat. Just think how nice it would be to have ALL of the space for a nice, hot, shower when you get your chlorifier installed and working.
Hi Vik, Thats a really great idea, when viewing boats we had seen a few like this, Becca did always speak of having a large shower...the problem is I think shes pretty attached to the old steel shower tray, hope you have a great week...lets hope we get this project finished soon
I'm with Bex, walk through bathroom. If you get trapped either side of the bathroom then out the door onto the towpath and in to the other door. Is there any space under the bow of the boat for calorifier?
Yes I think the walkthrough bathroom could be the way to go. we would have liked to have put it in the engine bay but we have heard they can freeze in the winter?
I'd extend the bathroom by either moving the bedroom into the backroom and extending the bathroom forward , or drop the wall Aft into the backroom and extend by a few feet that way .
Then you could keep the open corridor past and have standing space between the toilet and shower .
Going back 3ft - 1 metre into the backroom you should still be able to drop in a sofa bed running across ways for visitors , folded up as Sofa when not in use .
Cupboards for storage hung on walls above the sofa .
Sofa bed or make a sliding slat trundle type bed / sofa with drawers underneath , similar principle to Davids ( Cruising the cut ) bed in his Van on his VANDEMONIUM channel .
I would love to have a bit of shift around but it seams weve already taken on alot of work, we dont really want to drag the build out any more. The back bedroom would be a great idea. a drop sofa is a great shout too.Thank for all your tips and advice
Hi Becca, Chris, I'm loving Becca's soup. I'm going to buy a blender and do what Becca did. It looked so yummy. Interesting re: the two plans for the bathroom design. I'm intriqued as to which one you will go for, but I think we all know which version it will be!!!! Chris you do an amazing job every week producing the Vlogs, as well as your DIY around the boat. Producing a Vlog is no mean task, as your Vlogs are so well contructed. Becca did it again with the stove, replacing the fire retardent rope. I'm learning so much from you too. An excellent Vlog, and hugely enteretaining. Thank you. Spoolbox.
The soup was really amazing, it can be really fun having cook ups on a boat, a bit like camping at times. Were still getting settled into the new year with the DIY front so things have been a bit slow but were finding our pace, thanks so much for your lovely words it really makes it all worth while hope you have a lovely week
Could you have both? Doors opened out across passageway when you need more room. Closed when you want a passageway or the loo is a bit smelly. Judicious use of bolts to hold the doors.
I've actually been mulling this idea over in my way. Gonna get my thinking cap on to see if I can come up with a way of doing it. Tba is for the suggestion 😊
I'd recommend keeping the bathroom small. It's a purely functional room for shitting or showering or both. Let it take up the minimum amount of space you're prepared to live with.
That one time you want to get through but can't because the doors are locked will be one time too many.
We've lived on our sailboat for 20 years with a bathroom that is 1.2m x 1m (the shower functions like a wet room with the water draining through a slatted floor into the bilge where it's pumped out). We've never thought we needed to lose space in the cabin or saloon to have a bigger bathroom...
Might that corridor bit have room for under-gunnel shelves/storage? By having the corridor, will you have better air flow through the boat?
Keep up the quirky entertainment, love your attitudes. Liz 🙏
Its a valid point..the problem is ours is already alot smaller than other narrowboaters ones...mainly because of the compost loo which is huge, oh woaw how cool bet you've had so many amazing adventures. Yes thats a great idea for under gunnel shelving, were working on it thank you Liz
The idea of making the bathroom one huge space makes the most sense. You could have two pocket doors, one on each side. and for the bathroom area, you could put an accordion door that closes off just the bathroom. so if someone is in there using it. They can, and it would allow a pass-through. Wins on all fronts! 🤘 However you decide to do it, I'll be watching. 🍿
I think that will probably be the best option, especially as there will only be 2of us on board. thanks for your comment
I haven't read all the comments but could you design 2 doors that open one way to close off the hall for an increased space when dressing. Then they open the other way to close off the bathroom and become the hallway. Should be able to do it so just one door can be opened and closed to go to the toilet without impacting use of the hall.
yes were actually thinking about a way we could shut the room off both ways that way we could have ether or really, its possible
Own a Widebeam and it’s great, never had any problems! Merch arrives - Orange Crowbot t-shirt - bloody handsome🤙 Go to the boat on Saturday in my magnificent T shirt and…. No diesel! The cold snap has drained my tank (circa £200!) and my poor webasto has worked its arse off and the exhaust has burned through a fender. Can’t get to better boating because no diesel and the Thames is on red boards! Drove to better boating and got 200 ltrs of red diesel, in Jerry cans. I then had to walk about a half a mile back to the car with the cans and then get them to the boat!! 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ you’re curse is spreading, but that said, cracking merch guys!!🤘🤙🤙
We would love to own a wide beam, but let's start with the narrowboat. Woaw thank you so much we really cant thank you enough for the support. I really dow believe we are cursed....and it's spreading fast through the network, good luck with your very own boaty adventure, what a mad life we have all chosen
@@TheNomadicCrobot crazy days indeed! 🤷♂️ if ever you’re near the Thames and Kennet Marina give us a shout! 🤙 I might need a hand moving Jerry Cans! 😈😈 keep up the good work and regards to Becks 💪💪
You guys are the masters of the cliff hangers! LOL
Hahaha!!! We can't argue with that!
Hi Chris and Becs, my preference would be a walkthough bathroom rather than an off corridor one. I think it will give you more space to use and you can arrange the bathroom to suit you rather than try and shoehorn everything into a smaller space
Thanks so much Gary, yeah it's just so pokey in there that I really feel the extra space would be the way to go. Now I've gotta figure out how to do it nicely or Chris won't forgive me!! 😂
Bec I am with you.
Cross boat bathroom right answer.
Nice to see you both again.
Keep warm dry and virus free both.
Calorifier suggestions lay flat across the boat under the steps out of the boat ?
Thanks so much David. It seems to be a better use of space I think. We tried measuring up to see if the calorifier would work behind the steps but realistically I think it's too bulky and would mean the steps would have to come out really far into the room sadly. Great idea though thank you. The same to you David, take care 😊
From what I remember from when you unpacked the calorifier quite a few vlogs back, it is for vertical use only and cannot be put horizontally !!!
Ahh no it can be used either or fortunately!
Me again, the great thing about watching you guys, is, I actually thought about buying a narrow boat, as I’ve sold my property recently, and a few yrs ago had the same thought. BUT, not now never 😂. Wish I could send you some warmth from Thailand, but only a wk to go now before sharing the wet and cold with you. Geoff.
Dont let us put you off, just make sure you do your research when viewing a boat, they all come with there problems but unfortunately has been a full refit, which I would wish on anyone who isn't skilled int hat department, though is probably a fun project if you go into it knowing what your up against
Hi guys 😅 sorry I could figure out how to send those photos of back cabin last week so I won’t even try to send photos of my walk through bathroom ! Walk through bathroom every time, so much more space to use … My bathroom doors stay open through the day but closed at night … keeps the bedroom warmer, mine’s in the middle like yours !
Keep up the good work, brilliant as usual…
Cheers G
oh bless you...we do have email address, but we wouldn't want to trouble you.thats a really good idea...we want to keep as much warmth on there as we can, have a lovely week
Nevermind about where the bed will be. What about where the brain-eating spiders will live? Having a walk-through bathroom would make for more space and fewer dark corners for....well, you know. That's where nice tiled surfaces come in. No place for all those little legs to get a grip.
The brain eating spiders already have their space in the bilges...so we should be quite safe.... saying that...
I love the bath all the way across. Lots more room and not so claustrophobic. Had that in a motorhome and it really didn't cause a problem. People aren't generally in the bath for that long.
That's what I was thinking. I just feel it will be a better use of the space as well 😊 It was so pokey in there before!
Your shorts are the only ones I watch as I find them annoying as they turn my TV off and go to my iPad so then I have to connect my TV up again. Never had celeriac in fact I don’t ever recall seeing it. I’m having trouble picturing your bathroom ideas but I’ll catch on as you start. We’re in Queensland, Henri has to see the doctor for his hand, stinking hot like 36 to 38. Take care guys and see you next week. 💕
Bless you Pauline, hope it's not to much of a problem. Celeriac is a weird one...looks like Brains, but very very tasty and simple. I should get Bex to put the full recipes up really. The bathroom is basically situated in-between 2 rooms on the boat...at the moment it has its own tiny room...Beccas wants to expand it by adding 2 doors so that we would essentially be using the hall way as part of the bathroom...though making this area larger...it will restrict someone from passing through the boat when engages. hope this makes it a bit easier to under stand. Best wishes to Henri...have a lovely week
@@TheNomadicCrobot. I’m with Bex Chris. I saw when she stood in the hall at the bathroom door, I thought use the bathroom as a walkway as well, you can still closed it off. Privacy, what privacy, you’re on a narrowboat. I so envy you guys. Henri was told by the doctor today another two operations in the next 18/24 months, something to look forward to eh. 💕
I converted mine to a walk through bathroom so much more room, positioning your hot water cylinder under a beds the best place, but remember if you have two coils in the tank to position it for easy access for the pipes.
Ahh that's interesting, glad to hear you think its the way to go. As for putting it under the bed, the problem is that that's quite a distance from the engine and I've read that the closer the calorifier is to the engine the better in terms of heating efficiency etc. Thanks so much for your comments 😊
That's the main thing to consider the pipe runs for ease of fitment.Mines about four meters from the engine.also fit bleed points on both coils for trapped air mine are like a tyre dust cap from toolstation. Plastic fitting should be done in a day 😂
the carpenters daughter put spring hinges on her bed that aided with the lifting. maybe worth looking into for the future.
Ooh that's a good idea. Many thanks for that 😊
Just have a dump over the side
Iv thought about it 🤣
Blimey. You've got a lot of work to do, guys. Good luck. Under my bed looks very similar. 😅😅
yeah its worrying Will, especially as we haven't really done anything yet this year, we were hoping to let loose by may, once the hot water and batterers are charging we have all the bits in place to go really , thanks buddy
@@TheNomadicCrobot fix it on the go. That's what I did. Amazing editing. I know how much work you put in..
You have a valid point, and we will with most of it, I think we need a shower and for the batteries to charge and then just do the rest on route, Thanks for noticing..not much really happening in this episode so just had to go mega on the editing to make it some what Interesting 🤣
Nice one got to be the walk through bathroom just bigger .but I wud keep the bondage ropes tucked away nice try Chris lifting the bed 🤣🤣🤣 have a top week guys 🙂🎸🔧✌️
Thanks Lee, this boat has many hidden treasures haaa
Hi folks, walk through bathroom. No brainer…. More space and you might even find more room for storage!
Thanks so much! It seems the walk through idea is winning the votes and absolutely we could create more storage that would be more easily accessed too 😊
Just do away with the toilet all together and use nappies.
😂😂😂😂
Great idea ...though a bit messy 🤣
Regarding your shower making are you trying to do the scene from Carry on camping with sid looking at babs in the shower😂
haha brilliant Simon...what a great movie
BIG bathroom Becks all the way allowing for bigger fittings 🤔🤔🤔
Thank you!!
Hey HMS Crowbot, You guys have made some great progress 😎. Yum it's certainly soup weather & Celeriac is deeelicious, Holy trinity of a soup base is carrot, onion & or celery/ celeriac. Coming from Lancashire as for the lavy I'd just pee out of one of the hatches lol 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks so much! Living the old HMS Crobot title! We will have to use that more often! Ahh yeah it's such a yummy soup. Oh yeah absolutely! Hahaha!! Love that!!! Before too long that might be what happens 😂🤣😂
Your soup made me feel so so hungry xx
its amazing how great these simple things can taste xx
Cabin bed on hinges with storage underneath.
Great idea, thanks so much ☺️
I went walk through, if anybody walks through and end up traumatised, well I can live with that🤣🤣🤣
Hahah!! Love that attitude!!!! 😂🤣😂
3:22 convince him that smaller space will be easier to heat up 🙂 - when you make walkthrough toilet.
owwwww now were talking
I would go with the larger non-walk through bathroom. Just make sure you are at the part of the boat you need to be in for the time the bath is being used. Also if someone is using the shower more than likely you will be moored so if you need to get the the other part of the boat just jump off to the tow path and walk down.
Thanks so much! This is what I thought, there's nothing to say we can't walk down to the other end of the boat and get on that end if you need to be in that room! Even if we aren't moored, you can walk along the gunnel too ☺️
True, and if you fall in, then you won't need the bath after all later. @@TheNomadicCrobot
Bec as a good idea for the bathroom ….and as someone said do your room in the snoring room and dinette /guess bed where your bed is now ….makes more sense i think
Thanks so much! Yeah we have a few options to mull over. We are lucky we have so much space! 😂😊
You’ve got folk all over Britain trying to figure out how to erect a pulley system in their bedrooms now, Chris! 🤣😂
And that soup, Bex, looked yummy! 😋 As my auld Granny would say “Stick to yer ribs!” Lol
Take care ya lovely pair!

Aww thank you, you'll have to give it a go! Your granny would not be wrong 😂🥰 The same to you 💕

Larger bathroom better in my opinion. Best wishes getting the hot water set up. Take care, D
Thanks so much Deb 😊
Becks if he's moving out I'm moving in 😅
Hahaha!!!! Are you good at DIY? 🤔😂
🤣 couldn't be any worse than he is anc I reckon I could stear the boat better ha ha ha
😂🤣😂
7:37 Chris you can do demolition 🛠️
now I never thought of that haaa
Well just what will be good in the long term for the bathroom . B looks nicer . But i am not there .
Thanks 😊
Option B, larger bathroom would be my choice. If you are moored and someone is reading War and Peace while sitting on the loo just get off the end you are in walk down the towpath and get on the end you want to be !
Hahaha!!!! Maybe we will have to put a sign up in there, short articles only and absolutely no novels allowed whilst using the facilities! You are absolutely right though and that was my argument that you can always walk to the other end of the boat and get to where you need to be that way!
Have you considered humidity or odor if you don't have an exhaust fan? 👃😁
Just a thought.
That soup I woulda bulked out with lentils and made it into a curry. . Far better use for veg.. ❤❤❤❤❤
how interesting what a great idea
I thought the calorifier was either or but not both. I thought you can buy horizontal or vertical ones as the element position is different.
Re: Bathroom. Totally has to be a walk-through and not a corridor. If you had kids or guests on the boat a lot then a separate room is needed, but as a couple you may just have to endure walking in while the other is having a poop on occasion but the extra 12square ft of space overrides that.
yes you can buy ones which operate on both positions which is the one we purchased, originally we wanted to put it in the engine bay buy we have heard in winters it can freeze.I think the walkthrough may be the way to go thanks
@@TheNomadicCrobot Sweet, I didnt know that so thank you for that info. In that case, maybe a horizontal install and stick a fake drawer unit over it to hide it
Two suggestions, make a bunk bed where your calorifier is and guests can go up the ladder to bed so you keep storage space, and Becs bring out a little cook book which could be self published on Kindle!
thats a good idea, we would probably have bottom part for storage though, the cook book idea is great ill have to let Bex know, Thanks
Always have a bathroom leading off the passageway..... dont section off the boat.....
Interesting. Can I ask why?
As Chris got something to hide open bathroom gives more space
Exactly haha
I'm with you on the bathroom design Bex ❤ sorry Chris ❤
Thanks so much Lisa ❤️
Whoops! Now you really is coming to some good conclusions.
All the small pieces you have in random places will, connected or put in the right place, form a united thing called a narrowboat.
With a door placed where it fits, an opening where it can be useful, will together form a nice narrow home for you.
I think a walkthrough is the best use of space!
I think you're right the walkthrough would be the best choice for space. haha I love your description of a narrowboat 😂 Thank you Rolf
Getting the shakes waiting for next episode
Bless you Simon ❤️

thanks for your comment, im not fully sure I know what you mean...but sometimes i do like to edit them that way...I just think it looks funky
I’m a bit concerned that if Chris has used the bathroom you might want to contain what ever he has done in there 😷

Put a pair of gasstrusts under your bedbase
Now that's an idea. Thank you 😊

Thank you so much for support it really means alot ❤️❤️
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this, so incredibly kind of you ❤️ Hope you have a lovely week 😊
I know giving you advice is a waste of time as you are normally weeks behind with your videos and you have already done it your way instead of the easier or better way people advised but first one is clarifiers work so incredibly better upright then lying down and a walk through bathroom with a door in the middle and one to the side allows you to have a full size shower cubicle, toilet, sink and still have room for a full size automatic washing machine.p.s. a lot of people fit the clarifier in the engine bay not a fan myself but saves room inside
no not at all, advice is always great, and were normally only a week ahead on these vlogs, weve never had the time to be months ahead. Thats interesting to know we feel having it upright will probably be the way to go, and having a bigger bathroom is also looking very likely , we wanted to put it in the engine bay originally buy had heard they can freeze, thanks for all your advice
When I finally get my boat…. Corridors are going lol
Haaa love it
Definately a walk through bathroom
It's seams like the better option
You shouldn’t have a carbon monoxide issue. House fireplaces don’t have a door. The convection from the heat of the fire sucks air in so the CO gets drawn up the chimney with the hot air… simples 😎
Yeah this is what I thought, I think it's sometimes just as you light it, it can get a bit smokey. Either way replacing the fire rope was necessary anyway. Thanks so much for your comment 😊

You should have bought that first boat with the boatman’s cabin, and bought yourself a horse to tow it… it’s not a troll post I lived on the kennet and Avon for 7 years, loaods of boats there use poles, and have no electricity… for washing I used to use swimming pools and leisure centres… cook on the towpaths, keep your camera on your boat because there are a lot of people properly escaping society, who do not wish to be identified, don’t be you tube grasses…!!!
The first boat I believe needed the entire Hull replacing so extremely costly unfortunately. Can you elaborate on the grass issue? I don't no what your refuring too??
All those trips to B and Q are not cheap, plus loss of income, complete overplaying would have cost you about £20,000 quid, not three years of your life renovating… the long pound on the k and a, is a bit like the Katina on Star Wars, lots of shady stuff going on…crop circles, people living off grid for various reasons, I knew some bloke who had lived in a shed boat for 20 years, no engine, electricity or water, just used to pole his boat around at night, doing the distance yearly… very interesting to hear him singing as he poled along by candlelight… anyway hope you get cruising soon, get yourself down to the kennet and Avon and you’ll see it’s more about towpath life than boat life… towpath fires, music and mad conspiracy theories…
Absolutely, had we known it was going to be a refit we would have purchased a completely different boat, but the end result will be a much much better boat now. Its mainly been marina fees for 3 years..the diy has actually been surprisingly cheap so far. Suppose everyone's narrowboat life has there own story. Yes I imagine there will be alot of towpath adventures to had, so exciting...let's hope it doesn't take another 3 years
@@TheNomadicCrobot ok to be a bit more positive. My mate had done his walls with old beer and fruit crates, dismantled it looked fantastic.
