    We've turned comments off for this vlog.
    Everything has been said and explained throughly, although there are still some people who don't understand the following:
    1. This is a manned lock where the responsibility for the safe operation of the lock, checking a boat is safe in the lock etc., lies with the lock keeper not the skipper.
    2. The control tower where the lock keeper sits is located some distance away from the lock and although there is cctv, it does not cover the entire lock and isn't the best image.
    3. The procedure is for the lock keeper to ensure you are safely in the lock, ropes around chains (which you can hear was requested prior to us entering) before lock operations commence. The best way, as the lock keeper to do this is to be lock side *before* you operate the lock.
    4. Yes, there was a radio call that stated quite clearly "We are in the lock."
    It did not state that we were in a safe position to commence lock procedures. Had that been the case the radio call would be "We are all safe and ready"
    Once again, as the responsible lock keeper the procedure is for them to be 'in no doubt' that the vessels were safe 'before' commencing further.
    5. The footage you can see of us attempting to move forward is because the lock keeper decided to commence operations *before* checking all vessels were safe.
    The chains you tie to are flimsy and weren't attached to the wall securely. Had the lock keeper been in attendance we could have secured our lines to the bollards at the side of the lock.
    6. Several others have commented that this is far from being an isolated incident and they have also encountered similar near misses. Clearly there are issues here that the navigation authority need to address (if they haven't already) to do with training and evaluation of procedures.
    7. Abuse is something we don't condone. However we've received comments that have been abusive towards us and these have been reported to RUclips and those people banned from the system.
    We've also received disturbing emails threatening all kinds of things.
    We won't ever respond to such communications and any such messages will, and have been reported to the necessary authorities.

    So happy to hear that the hull has not been damaged. That would really have made for some stressful times. No failed welds, no leaks, no bent hull are all good things. I hope that when the repair is done they tale the cabinet out so you can inspect well behind it for piece of mind, even though the surveyor has done the needful.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад +1

      Cheers!
      Steve Ellis, who undertook the repairs, did discover that the unit had indeed twisted, there was quite a bigger gap at the back than first thought and that it wasn't worth repairing, so made something to replace it.

    Oh Bless You Tony and Jan ❤ What an awful thing to have happen to your home. So, so glad the damage wasn't to the frame of the boat but that is little comfort when you are obviously so stressed about when the internal damage can be fixed and who will have to pay for it. Thankfully you have video footage! I'm watching this on 21st October so hopefully everything is now sorted and you are once again laughing and enjoying your cruising. Take care and stay safe. Sending big hugs to Jan as her tears made me well up too 🤗😥.

    OMG I can't believe this has happened to you, I have been travelling to Keadby every year since 1995 , this is the only year no one has come to check and take my ropes, same lock keepertold me to put a rope around the chains which wasn't even fixed at the bottom and as we where the only boat (fibre glass) would have hit the other side with force if I hadn't of noticed. Whilst at Keadby a narrow boat turned up at 7.45pm and was complaining they was booked in coming from Torksey and she went home at 7pm because she lives in Keadby didn't attempt to contact the expected boat even though she had there number. They was left for nearly an hour outside on the trent Whilst crt told her to go back. Everyone we spoke to said she has a very bad reputation. This was in end of August when I was there. She needs to go we can not have this type of behaviour on a major lock like Keadby. I hope all turns out in your favour.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад +11

      Hi Lee and thank you for sharing your story.
      I think it highlights to those who have blamed us for what happened, that there is (was) a series problem at Keadby.
      As you've highlighted and as we have been told, ours is not the first time potentially dangerous incidents have occurred on this lock keepers watch.
      You have to ask yourself why, having been told on the radio to open the gates because there was a problem, did the lockie not come down and check everything was OK *before* closing the gates?

    • @Antipodean33
      @Antipodean33 8 месяцев назад +8

      Is there a complaints mechanism where you can lodge written formal complaints about this person? She's obviously not into the job, she didn't even come down to check all was well before proceeding shutting the lock. I would've thought that would be part of her job, an actual requirement before proceeding with the shutting/opening of the lock.

    Nationwide ,brings back memories,think Pete still go the same trousers on. I went down to keadby because the lock was out,I watched the river for a week and decided against it. There was full trees and huge stick islands going up and down!

      Pete was very helpful to us, we were lucky we were in that area.👍
      It is scary when you watch a tidal river moving at speed with so much debris in it. We witnessed the same thing at Selby when we went to check on the Ouse. As you say, whole tree trunks floating down is as much of a worry as the actual flow itself!

    I'm confused, your'e experienced boaters and at 4.49 mins you told the lockkeeper that you were all in the lock when clearly you weren't? I've done a couple of barge holidays and lock safety was top of the list. Either your'e in a lock or your'e not.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад +2

      One last time for those at the back (and those lurking in the dark recesses of the internet):-
      1. This is a tidal lock operated by a professional lock keeper. Like all the other locks on the tidal trent the lockies job is to ensure the safety of all the vessels under their control. Any boater will tell you, it's custom and practise to be greeted by a lock keeper at such a lock.
      You maybe the skipper of your vessel and be responsible for it, but you're not in charge or responsible for the safety or the operation of these locks.
      2. In this lock you are supposed to secure your boat to chains, most of which don't attach to anything at the bottom so are next to useless. They certainly aren't going to hold an 18 ton narrowboat!
      3. If you hadn't noticed, and you should when you enter any lock especially going down, the potential flood of water cascading over and through the top gates. Not only can this water flood the bow of your boat and cause it to sink, it also acts like a tide, pushing your boat back - especially these particularly badly maintained gates, the force of water is quite something. Therefore as you move forward to clear the bottom gates, without anything to secure your boat to the wall, it will inevitably push you back.
      4. Yes, I admit I told the lock keeper we were all in the lock. And nothing more. There was no implication that we were safe and the lock keeper didn't ask.
      Her job was to check that we were safely in the lock. The only way to do that was a visual inspection, not to take someone's word, or implication from a radio comment.
      As explained earlier, it's *their* responsibility, not mine.
      Had she come down she could have offered to take one or both ropes from us and wrap them round a bollard on the lock side if the chains were ineffective.
      She didn't, instead she immediately closed the gates and as the footage shows I desperately tried to move the boat forward, but the force of the gate and the forces passed onto the other boats pinned us in.
      Was there more I could have done?
      Quite probably, but hindsight is an amazing thing, as are armchair critics who all think they know better.
      The important thing to remember and gain from this is that we should not have been put in this situation in the first place.
      Lock keepers are trained to be professional and do everything possible to avoid such events occurring. The safety of the vessels and the people in their locks being their primary concern.
      Why did this happen?
      You have to ask the navigation authority that question because they are the employer and the body ultimately responsible.

    Hi Jan, Tony
    Great that you have sent a reply & that you are okay.
    I agree about the chains but i have only used high ropes at keadby, i ran out of Thorne 2003 to 2015 at which point i moved further up the River Trent , in the summer Keadby suffers from a thick carpet of weed which is a big problem for some boats.
    The lock keepers then were good & always at the edge of the lock to assist with ropes etc.
    I know 2 of the lock keepers well & they are very good , you unfortunately got the not so good one, sadly this situation wont improve as CRT are planning to use volunteers at keadby like they have at West Stockwith & Torksey.
    The number of boats calling at West Stockwith per year as compared to 5 years ago is a lot less (300+ down to less than 100) so i can not see how CRT can say its a success using volunteers
    Tidel locks should be manned by professionals in charge no problems with volunteers helping but not incharge.
    Happy sailing

      They are powerful hydraulic gates and you're correct in saying that the effect of the force exerted on our boat pushed us altogether thereby leading to the damage causes.
      Thankfully everything was eventually repaired.
      Have a read of some other boaters experiences in the same lock, one as recently as August, and you'll discover that ours was far from being a rare occurrence...

  • @SailProMarina

    Its quite bizzare that the wooden door compressed that steel hull that much and caused that extent of damage.
    You should have an Air Horn or be ready on a VHF in that situation.
    And did you not notice well before it started its closing cycle that is was not going to clear your stern ? Very unfortunate although in my opinion there's some contributory negligence in that mishap.
    I am quite adept with locks as I pilot vessels through the Welland Canal , near Niagara Falls , a few dozen times a year with 8 locks thru the passage. ( all steel doors too )
    Well I hope your vessel is fixable correctly. It's on my bucket list to charter a narrowboat in the near future and tour the UK in summer......

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  7 месяцев назад +2

      Large lock gates can weigh in excess of 4 tonnes each - these are likely bigger and use hydraulic rams to open and close. Air horn would be useless as the lock keepers control room is some way from the lock itself and its where the lock keeper was during the entire operation of the lock. As you must know about lock operations, you would know that the vessel needs to be secure in the lock before operations commence. Several factors rendered this ineffective - the chains you are supposed to wrap ropes round were not secure at the base so were next to useless; the ingress of water from the top lock meant without being secured we were constantly moving backwards; the failure of the lock keeper to inspect the state of the vessels in the lock and not be alongside to take our ropes so they could be wrapped around the bollards at the top of the lockside in order for us to be secure was a major failure.
      Skipper is in charge of his vessel, the lock keeper (especially here) is responsible for the safety of those vessels in their care and operation.
      Hope you have an enjoyable time when you come over 👍

      @@MakingNewMemories Ohhhh , Yes with that said , the Lock Operator needs a swat on the lips. 100% they are to Confirm all vessels are in proper position and tied in the fashion the lock would require. In my experience when an operator is not in a tower or booth to visually confirm this , they usually have CCTV on both ends to confirm that way. Not a lot of wooden locks left over this way now , mostly steel doors and in the Welland Canal which I pass thru often , we usually have 25ft of open water between the doors and any vessels with these locks being 400+ ft long. Well I certainly do look forward to coming over and chartering a LongBoat for a couple weeks and enjoying the waterways and their history.

    I work around shipping and work around some large locks, the biggest being over 300m long and 45m plus wide.. this is a tricky one because you’ve told the Lockgates via VHF that you are in the locks. That’s probably been taken as you are all fast and clear and ready for the outer gates to be put on.
    On the flip side, it’s down to the lockgateman or women to being watching what’s happening and as soon as that gate is struggling she should have stopped.. also, if she’s operating the gates on her own then I’m surprised there isn’t any CCTV on the locks.. in must be hard to get a miter on them looking out the tower especially on the inner gates unless they are self mitring!
    Best thing is to keep the radio close or a handheld over your shoulder but I would suggest the blame lies with both parties but mainly with the lock operator..
    I’m amazed a steel boat has been flexed like it has but Lockgates are powerful things.. hope you get it all sorted soon.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад +2

      Id be interested to know from someone with your experience of large locks if the lock keeper and/or those responsible for its operation are in attendance before lock operations commence?
      It certainly happens at the other tidal locks on the Trent.
      It would have been interesting to know what would have happened had we, the only boat with VHF didn't have one...we virtually did all the work for her - spelling out the names of the three boats (which should already be in the book) and discovering that the chain at the stern was next to useless. As its classed as a heritage structure they aren't allowed to replace the chain with something more substantial as almost every other lock.
      We understand that there is CCTV but it doesn't show the lock in its entirety, the blind spot being the starboard side of the lock meaning a proper visual inspection prior to operating the lock is vital. Would you, a professional lock keeper, accept the word of the skipper and take "we're in the lock" as being what it is rather than make assumptions? Would your practise and procedures and common sense not want you to be absolutley 100% clear in your own mind that everything was safe, knowing that people's lives and property could be at risk?
      I'm happy to hold my hand up if I make a mistake (see several previous videos) but both of us and expert eye witnesses all point the failings of the professional lock keeper on this occasion.

    • @PillSharks
      @PillSharks 8 месяцев назад

      @@MakingNewMemories normally you would have somebody on the wall and on the controls. It used to be a man to position the bow and a man to position the stern with what we would call “a man on the book” meaning somebody in the tower controlling the gates and paddles.
      The 3rd man has been dropped for cost saving reason, so now you would have somebody on the stern to count the ship down into position which would involve talking to the pilot over the VHF or captain. Once the ships all fast and everyone’s happy the gates will be closed and the ship lifted up.
      If it’s tight (a big 298m ship) then the gates won’t be closed until she’s settled down and the Lockgatman on wall has called the man in the tower that the gates can be closed.. if say a tug is unhappy then he will speak on the channel the ships working that he needs more room.
      Making assumptions is normally when accidents happen, which is why I would put the blame more towards the lock controllers as they shouldn’t be closing the gates if it’s not clear! As for CCTV.. that only works if the person on the controls is actually looking at the screens!
      I would think the canals are in the same boat as us (excuse the pun). Everyone is penny pinching whilst also banging on about health and safety! Paying for CCTV to be installed is cheaper than a man’s wages and covers the H&S problem. It doesn’t of course but it saves thousands a years which is far more important than employing people!!!

  • @westpacificmarketanalytics2384

      Just out of interest, but would it not have been better lock management to put the longest boat in the middle thereby allowing plenty of room in the lock for three boats of varying sizes? How boats are placed in a lock is part of lock management as witnessed by the experienced lockies on the Thames. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned there...?🤔
      As for not being clear of the gate, there was no warning or announcement that the gate was about to close and no presence of a lock keeper to ensure we were safe as happens on all the other three tidal locks...

      It is a fact, as you rightly point out, that it is the lock keepers responsibility to ensure all the vessels in the lock are safe before operations commence. A visual inspection on a lock of this magnitude is the very least you'd expect. 👍

    It's 23rd October and I've just watched vlog, this now explains why I drove past you both in Barnby Dun a few months ago. Guess you'd been shopping to coop. Safe travels, hope you got sorted. 😉

      We love Barnby Dun! Its a lovely place to moor up - shops, a chip shop (and other takeaways) and a farm shop. All sorted thank you for asking, might catch you at BD again in the future as we're still in the area....plans went to pot due to this 🙃

    Sad there was damage to your boat but great video of a Bridge never heard of and must be the only one in the world like that and what a construction as the rail lines must not be out more than 1 CM less than half and inch.

    Oh my goodness, you poor things....a frightening, worrying, stressful time for you then and one that should not have happened...cannot understand why did the lock keeper not inspect all boats before closing gates!! This surely should be a priority. Worrying to hear that this has happened before and an investigation is being undertaken re this lock keeper!! Why were they still working a shift ??! Xx

      Hi Lynette.
      Good points and your guess is as good as ours as to why incompetence and a disregard for safety would appear to be acceptable by the navigation authority.
      If you've watched our vlogs you'll know we've been here before with another major tidal lock and a total lack of customer care. The outcome of that led to all staff being retrained. One hopes that the same happens here...🤔

      Cheers Kevin. It really messed us up at the time. It was the realisation that it could have been a lot worse. I think there is CCTV there but it doesn't show the lock in its entirety and there is a blind spot, ironically on the side we were.
      The lock keepers job is to physically come and check that the vessels are secure before operating the lock. It was a major failure.

    The units need to come out and the damage to the internal wall to be re-addressed likewise access can also be obtained to repair the floor. The cabinets might be fine but would be better being replaced.

  • @kevbaker153
    @kevbaker153 8 месяцев назад +75

    at the end of the day you are the skipper and its your responsibility to ensure the safety of your vessel, that lock will take a 72 ft boat so you should have been clear of the gates, you've been out on the river so your front end should have been secured to maintain water tightness, yes the lockie should have checked but 90% of the blame lies with you!

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад +12

      There are professional lock keepers employed for a reason - *they* take responsibility for the safe operation of the lock, the skipper is told what to do. Responsibility is passed to the lock keeper because it is their lock.
      Sadly this lockie thought it was OK to operate the lock without any safeguards or bothering to inspect the vessels under their control as is custom and practise at all the locks on the tidal Trent.
      There are details that we have not mentioned for legal reasons, but let's just say that this is not the first time an incident has happened here.
      We had expert witnesses to back up what happened through a lack of a duty of care.

      Mostly correct, he is the skipper and responsible for his boat, however, when there is a lock keeper, on a sizeable lock such as that, they are responsible for all the boats within the lock. At the end of the day, the lock keeper should have checked before operating the locks. If they were at a normal lock and caused damage, then the skipper would be responsible.

      Doesn't " Lock Keeper " mean just that ? It's their responsibility once you have entered the lock for the safety of you and the operation of the lock itself !!! If I had the job I would get off my behind and come and check that all traffic is safe before commencing to operate the lock gates therefore ensuring the safe passage of boats whilst in " MY lock ! " , BY MY , I mean the lock which I took the job to operate in a safe manner ensuring the safety of both boats and MY lock gates !!!! I'm afraid incompetence , lack of skill and pure laziness by the Lock ' KEEPER ' ensured a perfect catastrophe . I'll suspect she got that job because it involved sitting down and pushing a couple of buttons ! Two for the gates and one for the radio !! All the rest were made from chocolate and were being pushed vigorously down....... her cake hole !!! Sorry for the stress and damage caused by - Pushing the wrong buttons down !!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      Absolutely wrong. When you enter a lock, you are under the control of the lock authority. It is the lock authorities responsibility to assure the safe placement of the vessels prior to operating the lock. The reason the lock operator was rude is because she knows this.

    These issues seem to be similar on The Thames with lock keepers on these large locks either attempting or allowing too many vessels to be crammed it at one time and then little space being left for margins of error.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, we've been in locks like that with cruisers, narrowboats and canoes! At least the lockies on the Thames are actually there, in person, to ensure you're safe. You have to wonder why there are no controls by the side of the lock as there are at Thorne Lock so that the lockie operates it only when he knows you're safe...🤔

    Thanks for this update on what looked like it would have been a beautiful cruise. Was the C&RT lock keeper single handed? I think that more care and detailed effort should have been used at this particularly big and complicated lock with a lift/road bridge, so there should have been at least two operatives involved. I'm not an expert in these particular things but in industry the HSE would and should have been brought to attention by the C&RT immediately. I hope that by now your lovely boat/home has been made back to ship shape. I hope that you are both doing really well and we'll see you soon. Take care and all the best. Stevie

    • @MakingNewMemories

      Hi Stevie and thank you for your comments.
      In answer to your question, yes there was only one lock keeper on duty. As far as we know they have a process and procedure they must follow. However, how rigorous this is enforced is a question for the navigation authority, but standard practice is for the lock keeper to make a visual inspection that both it and the vessels within are safe before proceeding.
      The tower in which the lock keepers office, radio and controls is nearby but doesn't afford a clear visual line of site of the starboard side of the lock.

    Hi All
    Keadby has very large & heavy gates, 2 river , 2 canal .
    The amount of water coming over the upper canal gates is caused by the out flow of the canal just above CFS moorings being blocked by orders of the environment agency,
    This flow of water into the lock does cause problems (11 mile pound) for boats using the lock & most boats going up & down hang near the lower gates to keep away from the flow.
    The lock keeper on duty should have been more visually aware of where the boats were positioned & the fact that one was along side the gate.
    It's unusual that a boater of many years experience would get caught out by being along side the gate at that point just before the gates are closed .
    Safe passage to all

      Thank you for the explanation Mick.
      Of course the other issue is that the chain you're supposed to sling a rope around isn't attached at the bottom rendering it totally useless. Something you wouldn't know unless you'd been there before or the lockie told you, which they didn't. 👍
