@@TechCrawl When it comes to boats, yes. Boats don't just get longer, they get larger in every dimension. In a lot of ways it's an exponential difference. A boat that's twice as long is easily 3 to 4 times as massive. A 20-ft day sailer weighs a few thousand pounds and can be towed behind your pickup truck... A 38 ft blue water cruiser might weigh 20 tons. The difference between a 24 and a 30 ft boat is actually rather dramatic.
There are men and there are men. Most people who consider themselves brave can never do this on their own even with training. Here’s a man we’ll all love to have in our corner. Stay blessed always.

This is my first time watching any of your videos. It really hit close when you talked about your relationship. My wife left me at the beginning of 2021, so I understand how this feels. My wife also did the no phone calls, no text, just went dark, and honestly it took me a while to put my finger on it, but it felt like she died. I'm 50, so this was my first break up in the cell phone era, and when your the one imposing the silence its fine, your getting your way, dealing with your emotions in your own way. When your the person who isn't making the choice, it feels like your wife died. Anyway I don't know if it helps to know your not alone, I don't know why I just wanted to comment, maybe this post was for me IDK.

Being lost at sea has always been my greatest fear, so watching you take on a task like this really blew me away. If I was you, I'd go through the rest of my life with a happy little smile in my mind that I was badass enough to sail across an ocean, alone, and made do when the metaphorical wheels fell off. You're a baddass, plain and simple. Great video!
This is how I put myself to sleep sometimes. I imagine I’m in an oversized unsinkable plastic barrel on the ocean just drifting with the current. I listen to the waves and wind and sometimes it rains or snows. It’s totally relaxing.
Congrats james. Took a lot of courage to take the leap, and showed a lot of character to pull it off. Many people would have called for help 1000 miles out with no rudder. You made it all the way to your own anchor unassisted. Hats off to you!

This happened to me years ago in the north Atlantic. Solution, for those interested, was SeaBrake (an Australian made drogue which is internationally available) linked to:- shackle then 10m chain to a swivel shackle secured to 100ft of 0ctobrade line looped through large blocks, with homemade jammers, rigged across the cockpit. Steered by pulling on the looped rope, as it crossed the cockpit, when necessary and then jamming off to hold course. Recommended to ALL Skippers who find themselves in this situation. Bravo Zulu James! You got her there, mate.
Thirty years ago I used to sail quite a bit. I met this old salt building a concrete sail boat next to the railroad tracks. He taught me how to sail with out my rudder. It is possible. But it takes expert training and tons of practice. It’s a skill that has to be embedded within you. But it can be done successfully. Trimming the sails is a two handed constant task with no time to rest. Been there. Thank you my old friend.
James, what an epic tale of survival. This is easily one of the top single videos I've ever viewed on RUclips. Loads of respect and gratitude to you for sharing. I found you on Wind Hippie's channel and I found her on the Old Seadog's channel. I'm all caught up on them, as well as Ran sailing, so you are my new binge. Hoping to set sail myself one day soon, before I'm too old. I have the drive, the money and the time. Just need to sew up one very important chapter in life before I can go. My wife of 23 years has been ill for some time. She spent 8 months on hospice care but recovered enough to be discharged. I have to see her through to the end. Who knows? I may die first. But if she goes while I'm still healthy enough, I will cast off the lines. If it's not in God's plan, then I will learn to accept that too. Anyway, thank you for the great channel and inspirations. Hey Gary, was wondering if you could share with me, in your opinion, what the first 3 worst things that could have happened would be? I have no experience at all in sailing but found this video mesmerizing and your comment had me very curious. Thank you
Thank you for the video. I forget where I read it (John Vigor comes to mind), but someone once suggested drilling and sealing a hole in the aft edge of the rudder so that a line could be rigged through it for emergency steering. It seems to me that the aftmost winches and cleats could be employed to adjust the line ends and make a passable jury-rigged steering system.
It wouldn’t matter if there was a hole for a line if it’s impossible to get to the rudder and run the line through, I dove on it twice and never even managed to touch the rudder
I loved every minute of this video, the challenges that you overcome and the problem solving when things did not go to plan. This is how a free spirit is meant to live. @@aaronwells6608 6 ft really make a dif?
@@TechCrawl When it comes to boats, yes. Boats don't just get longer, they get larger in every dimension. In a lot of ways it's an exponential difference. A boat that's twice as long is easily 3 to 4 times as massive. A 20-ft day sailer weighs a few thousand pounds and can be towed behind your pickup truck... A 38 ft blue water cruiser might weigh 20 tons. The difference between a 24 and a 30 ft boat is actually rather dramatic.

This happened to me years ago in the north Atlantic.
Solution, for those interested, was SeaBrake (an Australian made drogue which is internationally available) linked to:-
shackle then 10m chain to a swivel shackle secured to 100ft of 0ctobrade line looped through large blocks, with homemade jammers, rigged across the cockpit.

You have a balls of steel and a brave heart! Very inspiring what you've done!
The drone footage really puts in to perspective just how alone you are out there, and just how small the boat is in the scheme of things.
