  • @watannen

    got a question if i may.
    Why do you think one might have the coolant expasion container dirty on the inside? Yours kinda looks like the coolant is old, or maybe red. And i mean similar, but darker i think. Where would the corrosion come from and why? As long as there is no air in the cooling system down in the block, there's no reason for it to rust, is there ?
    Is it possible to have that without having had a blown head gasket in the past, do you think?

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  3 года назад

      You may indeed.
      I believe the residue will be just rust and other sediments. The coolant in this car is a 5 year coolant and nearing the end of its life now. I don't believe the corrosion will ever be completely stopped in the system. Bear in mind the coolants have " Corrosion Inhibitors " so they are not advertised as being able to completely stop it. There is always an amount of dissolved oxygen in water which will allow some corrosion to take place. There are other things that cause corrosion also, its all very scientific but the short take away is you'll never stop corrosion entirely.
      This car has been owned since new and has never had a head gasket failure so yes its entirely possible.

    How have you found your Bosch spark plugs? Reading the Renault forums, alot of people seem more keen on NGK for this engine as thats what's recommended by Renault as you say. However, I managed to get a good deal on Bosch double iridium so went with them for this job as I personally have had good experiences with Bosch products.

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  Год назад

      This is a great question.
      They have been totally fine for me. The OEM sparks for these engines are Champion REA8MCL. I have had personal experience using the Champions, NGKs and the Bosch. Never noticed a difference between an of them. I expect most people saying about a huge difference simply didn't notice a problem with engine running that they previously had.

      I understand your concern. The dipstick has an o ring on its base and is a tight fit into the tube but I'm afraid there is no way to be sure it wont work it's way lose. If it does come even slightly out it will make an awful mess there is actually a video on RUclips of it happening. The best way to get the part will be to buy an inlet manifold from Ebay they are much cheaper than you think. Or message someone who has one for sale and see if they will just sell you the clip.

    Hi, just bought one of these little cars to potter about in. 2005 mk2, 1.2 16v. Are they supposed to have shielding underneath? Several of the previous MOTs note "under trays and engine covers fitted obscuring some components", but it doesn't have an undertray now. I see yours doesn't either? Is this a model dependant thing or do they just die and fall off over time? I've seen parts listed on various sites stating they are the undertray for my specific model but they all look different to each other..? Any advice you could give would be really helpful, your videos have already helped me out a lot, I'm enjoying working on it so far! Thanks.

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  2 года назад

      They did have undertrays fitted as new but no Clio 2 I've ever seen still had one on. The Clio in this video has been without one for at least ten years and has done 118k miles with no ill effects.
      They usually get left off/broken during mechanical work.

    • @alistairmscott
      @alistairmscott 2 года назад

      @@SocketsAndSideburns good to know it's not essential, thanks for replying. I bought this one for 550 quid, it was gonna get scrapped. Was gonna limp it through 1 more MOT, use it for a year and then scrap it myself, but the more time I spend in it, the more I think it deserves another chance at life. 55k miles and service receipts every year for the last 10 years. It's averaged about 1700 miles a year for the last decade and with a good polish and wet vac inside it's come up looking absolutely brand new. It's been incredibly well kept. Was thinking about getting it back into tip top as new condition but if it can live without an undertray then so can I. I'll spend the money on the timing belt instead! Thanks again for your videos, they've been invaluable.

    Hello mate, don’t suppose you could do a video on intake manifold and rocker cover removal for this engine? As I’m trying to do a valve adjustment and can’t seem to get the manifold off fully without removing the AC compressor? Any thoughts?

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  3 года назад +1

      I actually will be doing the valve clearances myself at some point and will do a video of it. I'm afraid it won't help you much though as this Clio doesn't have AC unfortunately.
      If your car is a Clio also then the AC compressor is above the alternator and you should be able to unbolt the compressor from its mounting that it shares with the alternator (three bolts I think) and just support it with something so it doesn't strain the refrigerant flexi hoses. You may even get away with just slackening the bolts off if it generates enough space. Obviously need to remove the AC drive belt first.

    I have a manual transmission Renault D4F that I put new fully synthetic gear oil 3 years ago, but due to the pandemic I've only driven it just 20,000 km since. The owner's manual says to replace the gear oil every 60,000kms or 2½ years.
    Feels like a waste to change out the oil after just ⅓ of the mileage. What should I do? 😅

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  2 года назад +1

      If the manual says change it then of course the "correct" thing to do is change it. All I can tell you is that the oil in this cars box has never been changed and the car is at 113,000 miles, however I'm prepared to change the box.

    Hi mate. Just found your channel. Great video
    We've just bought a mk3 1.2 clio for our son's 1st car. The engine is the same as far as I can tell.
    I'll be giving it a service this weekend so this video is perfect.
    It has just pinged up an oil pressure fault that seems just to be intermittent. Oil checks show the level is good and no other warning lights come up and the car runs perfectly. I'm thinking a faulty oil pressure sensor (only a 12 quid part so not going to break the bank) which I'll change with the service. I don't think the oil pump's gone or it would have caused a more severe problem all ready.
    Have you had any experience of this or light you could shed?

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  2 года назад +1

      Thankyou very much. You are correct that the engines are the same at least for the purpose of the service, the Clio 3 should have the D4F 740 whereas this is the D4F 722. I made a video on how to find the engine stamps on these D type engines. ruclips.net/video/CnuLWbRXr-I/видео.html
      The oil pressure switches on these can fail. I'd start with that assuming of course the cars been serviced regularly and the correct oil is already in it. I'd try to limit use of the car though until you do just incase.

    • @SocketsAndSideburns
      @SocketsAndSideburns  Год назад +1

      Yes there are two. They typically last around 100k miles for the pre cat one and longer for the post cat. There is no typical recommended change interval, just replace when failed. Cleaning is usually pointless and will not meaningfully extend life of the sensor as the usual failure is the heater failing.
      If the pre cat sensor begins to fail it will be very obvious on this car, the misfires are horrendous.

      This car in the video does not have a fuel filter that is a service item. On early models pre June 2001 there was a fuel filter fitted to the front of the fuel tank. You can check there to see if your car is fitted with one. The bracket to hold it was never removed from the tanks so it should be obvious whether you have one or not.
      On later 1.2 16v Clios like the one in the video the filter is in the tank as part of the fuel feed unit and is not a service item.
