We have an 8 year old Black and Tan Coonhound. For the right owner/family they are wonderful pets. Some things to keep in mind if considering a Black and Tan Coonhound: 1) They cannot be trusted offleash or in an unsecured yard unattended. 2) To keep them healthy, they need a regulated diet and to not let them get overweight. Like Beagles, they will overeat if left to free-feed, and need a high protein, quality diet to stay healthy and lean. 3) They are great with children and other animals. They will give chase to stray cats and squirrels that run, but they quickly recognize other family pets and children as part of their pack and are very gentle and patient. 4) They can be prone to ear infections, skin infections, allergies and joint issues. But given a good diet they are a very healthy breed that can easily live into its teens. 5) These guys are the ultimate couch-potatoes. While they can be very active outdoors and track a scent for miles, indoors they are happy to lie next to you on your sofa lounging all day. They also love a good sunny porch to sunbath on. Buyer beware, these dogs consider themselves part of the pack and family and will not understand why they cannot snuggle with you on the couch. While lines need to be drawn with your coonhound regarding dominance, they also will likely never understand why they can't sleep in your favorite chair or on the sofa.
You are way more spot on that this video that does a horrible job! Thank you just got a black and tan today!! Have a few buddies that run lions. That will be her life
My 6 year old B&T saved my life. Had him since he was 10 weeks. Best dog I've ever had and is truly my best friend. I'm disabled and we are together 24/7. Everyone in our neighborhood knows and loves Jeffrey.
I have a 4 year old B&T. Very friendly, good at the dog park and on hikes. He loves to swim and chase tennis balls. Cold weather, sleet, rain don't bother him. People are attracted to him - a beautiful dog. I've successfully trained him to stay in visual range when off leash. Best dog I've ever had!
Thank you I loved.
They are not high shedding at all.they are not high odor either. They are Fantastic! They're Perfect.
I had one many years ago. And all that is said of them, i find to be true. I wish my family at the time w as more stable for a dog as great as this. Now in my mid 20s i look for a companion such as this.
Just adopted a ten month old Black and Tan coonhound from the pound this week. She is smart, friendly, adventurous, super well behaved in terms of commands, and is literally perfect in every single way except for one. She has the worst separation anxiety I’ve seen in a dog. BUT I think it has less to do with the breed and more to do with the time she spent in the shelter and whatever might have happened during her first adoption.
I literally have the same story for my black and tan coonhound mix ... He learns very well is extremely obedient on and off leashadapted to my family extremely well but hates when we leave him alone even if it's just to go to the bathroom he screams like a lunatic only thing that I would say that wouldn't make them a good apartment dog is if your neighbors aren't going to like your dog howling when you leave other than that I have absolutely no complaints about my boy "Dobz"
One thing to remember about hounds is that they are, first and foremost, predators, and very good ones at that. While they give them a low number for prey drive, that is actually a good thing for hunters, which is what they were bred to do. You don't really "train" a hound dog. You develop them, which requires lots of patience. They don't take well to being scolded. You kinda have to just let them be them, but develop them within your parameters. If its a hunting dog you want, you'll find that their nose tells them everything they need to know except how to interact with YOU!
I'm a little confused, does 10 mean "highly likely" and 1 mean "least likely"?
I have a black and tan he's 10mts old..he loves to run the yard hunting birds and squirrels 😆His name is Koly P
ok, so these videos say the black and tan coonhound has higher energy than the curly coated retriever(by 1) and borzoi, but same exercise needs as curly coated retriever, borzoi has lower energy? but 1 higher exercise needs, if i'm getting this right, so, how does that all work out? kinda confusing me, surely the dog with less energy would have lower exercise needs,
oh wait, i think i've got it now. high score in energy means high energy low score in exercise needs means needs more exercise, not less. right. nevermind. still posting this in case anyone else finds themselves thinking something along these lines. heh.
I had a Black and tan as my dog when I was a young boy...we payed football in the backyard for hours...I'd throw the ball and run for it and when I'd grab it Duke would plow into me and tackle me. A few years later when I was old enough to hunt my Dad took us into the field with some friends' hunting dogs to get duke trained up...he was off with the other dogs and then showed back up by himself. When I called him he kind of slowly walked over and I noticed he had a snake in his mouth...turned out to be a big Diamondback Rattler. He dropped the snake at my feet and then laid down and pretty much died right then.
That breaks my heart for you. He wanted to be with you one last time. I'm not religious at all, but if there's a higher power, we were given dogs to help us get through life. They're the best. I'm writing this because my wife and I found a great Coonhound breeder and we're picking up two brothers in a few weeks. I'm just happy to hear that Duke was a great dog for you.
@@joek.7523Thanks for the thoughtful reply...good luck with your dogs.
Oh my god this is pretty sad. I hope you're doing much better right now and have another dog do your company
Steve Fowler loyal to the end.. wow and sorry for your loss
What's prey drive and wanderlust mean?
This is a scent hound, a dog used for hunting, so it's literally been bred to want to do that (tracking and hunting, I mean) for at least 200 years. So I don't really get why "high prey drive" is on your list of weak points? This rating system is really strange.. :/
My b&t coonhound is nine now. The breed is really uncommon here in Scandinavia, but I guess I was lucky. I'm not a hunter, but a wasn't looking for a dog to just sit inside with, I was looking for a dog to go out into the forest and have fun with. And I knew what I got myself into, there is nothing he loves more in the world than tracking. I don't really know why some people (read: Americans, most often) get dogs that are bred for a specific purpose and expect it to act like any other companion dog.
Lol I'm sorry for the rant, here in Sweden (and in the rest of the Nordic countries as well) it's just not a thing. If you want a companion dog, you get a dog that's bred to be a companion dog. If you want to hunt, or track, or train agility or anything else, you get a dog that fits those expectations.
So your rating system is kinda shit, is what I'm trying to say I guess
Do you know why black and tan hounds are not good with seniors. If it's agility of the owner it's not a problem for me.
I think they're making the assumption that seniors would not be good with black and tans. They can be big dopey idiots till 3 years old and can be very difficult to train. They are really smart but very stubborn. Also they can be difficult to walk on leash as they will try to chase anything so you need to be strong enough to control them. Otherwise they are a very sweet, gentle dog. They make great companions as well as excellent alert and watchdogs.
@@jocelyns0613 Mine needs lots of exercise. Not just a walk. A hike!
Our Black and Tan hates cats..
Hounds sometimes will not tolerate cats or even small dogs. My daughter got a b &t coonhound "rescue" that the organization said was an Aussie mix. NOT! She went on vacation for a week. I was to watch her 2 small dogs (whom he chased RELENTLESSLY) The B&T coon hound went to hang out for a week w her girlfriend who had a GSD puppy of about 1 year old. The B & T was about 14 mos old at the time. Problem solved right? NOT SO MUCH!! The girlfriend also had a cat whom he chased RELENTLESSLY!! I came home from work and found him tied in the kitchen. Thank God it was Saturday and I spent the rest of the weekend attending to them. He was a good old boy and I loved him to death but the people from the animal rescue who placed this dog w my daughter were imbeciles,' so was my daughter. I took one look at him when he was 4 months old and told her that this was a B & T coonhound puppy. He might have been mixed but he looked EXACTLY like every coonhound I have ever known and behaved EXACTLY like one, too. (I have known several blue ticks). Now she has a huge fenced in yard but this dog was not going to make it in the suburbs without a dedicated owner who liked hiking and outside exercise. Then there was that deep booming voice. To say the least, the neighbors were not charmed. I couldnt blame them.....I actually love hounds' voices but I am not sure I would want to hear it at 11 pm when he went out for a late night potty. He also made a decent guard dog which is, again, not uncommon in my experience. He was good with the kids and protective of his people but in no way vicious. He was intelligent and devoted but when the prey drive dropped into gear, the ears snapped shut. They need to warn people. Hunting hounds are great dogs but people need to be aware of what they are getting into.
I used to coon hunt a long time ago I hunted with every breed there was but my hunting partner picked up a black and tan at a action suppose to be a cousin of Cypress creek Jim turned out to be a littermate after we got the papers back she was used in a puppy mill she was in bad shape when we got her with the help from our vet he knows how we got her and vollinterd service got her back into shape within 2 years she was a show champion and a grand night champion the B T was the easiest dog too work with hey my mom was not crazy about dogs but she was out walking her with pride
And the most accurate tree dog ever I have seen
