- Farewell AMS2, Oh Hello AMS2
The Problem withmaking things better is sometimes you have to tear chunks of the old away and replace them with "better" this fundimentaly changes the original......for the better ;)
An exercise in re learning the AMS2 muscle memory

For those wanting to have a go
Ok WARRNING! WARRNING! If you've quit the video just after I say "AMS2 IS DEAD" And have unsubscribed, hit the dislike button and are about to type an abusive message......you might want to watch the next 30 second after that point......just saying like..... I have plenty Penguine commets left to send out..........The King is dead, long live the King ect ect ect LOL
Penguin....idiot
I drove a truck for a living for 32 years. Almost never the same truck twice. Always different motors, power, size, layout, etc. Adapting to a new ride is my jam. All of the adjusting is not an issue for me and I'm loving the new update. The cars respond more like the way I would anticipate vs the more unpredictable slides or spins or losing the rear end. Now when I lose it, I say, yep...felt that coming. I had it down pat where the AI would go into every turn and now I'm finding them to be way more unpredictable which is challenging but was very much needed. Prior to the update, every overtake felt like a routine, passing at the same places the same way every time. Now there's variety!
Totally agree on overtaking. The AI, despite being set to low aggresion, would actively defend their position. Sometimes too aggressive but i was always able to react on time so no crashes yet.
I don't play much online so this is a welcome addition to singleplayer experience.
I did basically the same thing. I used the Formula Junior on Cadwell Park. It really helped to get my head around the new handling. It's less exuberant and more precise now. Overall I am really impressed with what they achieved in 1.6.
The only thing i look for in a racing game is if i have to drive it like a race car and finally it delivers. Trail braking, hitting the apex, locking up the brakes and basic tire management all seem to be working great, you have to drive smooth.....I'm loving it.
We have wise words here
Just finished my first race with vintage F1 (gen2 brabham) - at Mosport ! Absolutely brilliant new physics !! sliding, drifting, tyres with mud and dirt on them. There was even one corner where everyone cut the kerb and put dust on the track, every lap it got progressively worse, amazing. Working my way up to the classic Indy cars.
Nice flow at Mosport :)
I was very surprised that these cars felt great
Mosport is now one of my favorite tracks.
Literally drove this exact combo before watching this video. Used this combo to set up my ffb. Absolutely loved it. This car is awesome for practicing carrying speed through a corner
great minds and all that ;)
Ginetta g40 cups are a great car to practice in for those who aren’t open wheel fans
absaloutly, great seat of your pants car
One of the very best I think, good call!
@@gsam_dad5540 indeed. And lfm are running them in a series at the moment so go fill your boots.
Been very critical of AMS 2 before, it was quite bad before driving wise but finally they fixed that magical grip on turn in. Now the car finally understeers or loses the rear.
Its really damn good now.
welcome to AMS2 ;)
Owen, your insights into AMS2 and other games for that matter, are very welcome. I genuinely appreciate the thoughts while driving. I’m slow to the uptake- still have not enjoyed the update myself, but your point of view and appreciation of the game will do wonders for getting me back into the mix! Cheers!
Much appreciated!
Ive been driving the formula vee a lot. Very punishing and easy to spin. It forces me back to basics!
AMS2 is dead. Long live AMS2!
In seriousness this is actually a great chance to pull any friends into the game who have been thinking about it, cause now you can learn as they do.
Tell them to hurry - Steam sale ends in 2 days. Atm it's half price.
This is what I've been alluding to, here and on discord. It's a really good change to how the cars behave on all inputs, be it brake, throttle or wheel. I don't think it's a coincidence that they held it back until the LFM open beta was ready. That way everyone goes in on a level footing (well unless you've ahem been on the beta) Glad you're enjoying it, lots more I feel to come for AMS2 as well 🙂
Don't you even start to say 1.7................
@@hereward1971 What? Me the 13th Duke of Wybourne, in a french maids fin ishing school, at this hour with 1.7 with my reputation? What were they thinking
formula inters are actually fun to drive now!
Hey! I tried out the 2019 Brazilian Stock Cars at Hockenhiem using VR and it was excellent. Your vids inspired me to get a Meta 3. The cars feel more planted. Also drove the Mercedes Group A touring car at various tracks offline and raced online using LFM. There is huge potential with the update. Take care!
Welcome to VR, now throw your monitors away, there dead to you! Glad you like them and you'll get use to the humour.
What you're saying is, with the new update it's like we're getting a whole new game that we have to relearn. If so then I'll happily take up that challenge. It's like getting a free better game in place of an already great one. If spending the time to learn the basics is the requirement then it just means facing a new challenge, at no additional cost. I see this as a positive, although I can see why those set in their own old ways won't share my (our) view.
PS: pounded many alaps at Brands Hatch Indy (the short version) with the Mini Cooper and LOVED IT! Was 2 seconds a lap faster than the new, much faster Audi DTM. Like you said, returning to basics has already paid dividends for me. Plus all the added fun of pushing the limits with the improved physics.
AMS 2.5 ..........It's Christmas come early! I was in an endurance race last night in GT3's I was seriously struggeling as were many others.......Going back to the basics was the awnser. re learn the cars.
@@hereward1971 Indeed. Love the idea to force myself to start small in order to better improve, took too many liberties up to now which shows in my poor driving. Which is why I'd like to drive some of Fred's mods, the slower FWD ones for example. But I just saw a comment on Discord that his mods are making the game crash to the desktop. Are you experiencing this?
Great advice and guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
Oh yes, you get to experience it all over again
💪🇦🇷
Cheers! Yeah I think they went as far as they could in 1.56 with what they had to work with, now theyve reworked the core elements they can keep refining it further in the future which is a masive bonus to us all :)
"Death is not the end, it's the beginning of something else" Wagner. I'm enjoying the sim more now then ever tbf having transitioned over from years of my still go to, AC...
F-Ultimate G1 at Spa is a pretty wicked setup with 1.6. AI car’s will let you go side by side thru eau rouge, 3 wide getting overtaken from both sides in the big DRS straights. good fun
Open top wise I like the Lotus 49 at Knockhill, it's exhilarating in VR. I hear what you're saying, I had to tell myself to chill out and have patience with myself to learn the game again. Ironic considering I barely mastered the game pre 1.6 lol
GAME, Game, did I just see someone call AMS2 a game !!! it's a god dam SIM lad, a SIM not a game, 3 hours on the naughty step for you @Space-0-2001 LOL
This!
I’m relearning brake markers, finding some turns easier and others harder, and being amazed by this update. GT3s are both more predictable and more punishing. Easier to drive if you’re driving correctly while less forgiving if you break the rules.
1.6 is fantastic as a gamepad player. It must feel amazing on a wheel!
good to hear the gamepad guys are happy too!
Great insight.
The new update is awesome
You are correct, Owen. I am still trying to come to terms with the new physics. I have had to design a new custom FFB file, cause the old one just didn't feel right with the new physics.
what wheel are you on?
@@hereward1971 T300
when you get it dialed in let us have a go........please, jammy dodger in it for ya!
@@hereward1971 Will do
The king is dead, long live the king!
All Hail his highness!
This.
I've had to completely relearn the handling. However, I can now save massive sideways shenanigans whereas before, I would just spin off.
Respect
0:41 what a sound to make right before saying " gosh its wet, its very wet ‘ .. we know what you mean Owen lol
PMSL
Hands down best sim of all.
Maybe your dead?
Theres some serious truth here, Reiza knew, thats why you can still play the old version in the beta branch! This was simply THAT different!
I'm starting to see a few folk prefareing the old version and calling out 1.6.........It's tricky, people want change then don't like too much change, they want improvement but don't want the feel to change......I think with such big changes you need to take time to adjust and apreciate it, with the Beta testers they got little updates over a period of time so there was no issue, the curse of putting out a huge update I suppose LOL
@hereward1971 I've seen one or two comments the same myself. I'm lucky I suppose. I'm hugely LTTP when it comes to AMS2 so I didn't have years getting used to a particular feel so the migration has been seamless for me really thankfully!
I don't know. I'm a ams2 fanboy but slidy is still slidy. I feel a little bit more grip And feedback through the wheel when cornering but I don't feel a massive change yet. Some of the older cars don't feel as good. However, I haven't raced much lately and I need To give it more time. Muscle memory you speak of has some merit though, so I will try to be optimistic.
Maybe I'm not picky but I just drive around any quirks anyway. I never found the handling in this game to be bad, but to be fair all the sims feel ok to me, even the old ones.
I was totaly happy with the pre 1.6 version, and I don;t think theres a sim I don;t enjoy the handeling off????
Try the 250cc superkarts for the very same reason.
They should call it AMS2+ because it really is a newer version of what was already out there, not just an update, but a revamp/remake, and Owen, AMS2 maybe dead, but your last lap Shenanigans sure arnt 🤣😂🤣
At this point last lap mishaps are being pushed through parliment to be writ into law LOL
so owen at the mo is it just thunderflash mods that work on 1.6?
most if not all track mods, skins and names, all thunderflash cars and xelia has pushed a few cars through and Xtc is in final testing af a number of cars too, no news on vcr or pcmt cars yet.
The majority of the people won’t drive these, the masses want easy = GT3x abs & TC. Wot and exit and 💯 braking into apex. I updated ams2 for the group c & CART, GT1 late 80’s 1. Group C Sauber is still too neutered, shouldn’t be about to wot at exit with 💯 boost 🤷♂️ 962 is better they did mention a tire update
buddy ,Will the mods be updated soon?
all thunder flash mods and some tracks already done, others are close
@@hereward1971for 1.6?
yes bud
I've gotta ask, how do the rallycross cars handle now?
good question.......not got to them yet.......yet.........
got to say the multiplayer aspect is still as buggy which is a massive disappointment, everything else is really cool
is this on the normal or pre generated races?
AMS2 should make the users drive this car before progressing to anything else. If you’re going to try to learn something, a little bit of logic is required.
race licencing! sir step this way, 1969 mini or 30's cast iorn bed frame......to be honest your right LOL
