    So here is what happened:
    Guy figured out that they were using the cells of the kids grandfather (maternal side) for medical trials. Since the family did not know that, that was highly illegal. He wanted to confirm that the cells were that of the grandfather and so he ran a DNA test on his son. In the end the family got 10 million.

    Henrietta Lacks. She was born with an interesting genetic defect. Her cells replicate with no mutations. Meaning that even as her actual body decayed with age, her cells would be immortal so long as cared for in a lab. Her DNA was harvested for a study into her cancer, but upon discovery of her cell's special trait, doctors and scientists multiplied her cells without her knowledge and without her consent. Her family would not learn of what scientists had done until the late 1970s. Her cells became instrumental in medical science because they gave researchers an unlimited supply of medical samples that all had the exact same reactions because they were completely immortal and never changed. Today, it is estimated that there are over 4 tons of Henrietta Lacks cells in labs around the world. Her family has received donations and awards for her contributions, but they dont want the accolades for being the victims of a system that violated their trust.

    • @MrQuest0
      @MrQuest0 3 месяца назад +2

      I definitely wouldn't say that they wouldn't change. The cells kept mutating, their genome so many generations down the line doesn't even resemble a human genome. Because they are not a part of a bigger organism and don't have active tumor suppresion genes that would induce apoptosis, all the genes not instrumental to self-sustenance and mitosis are mutated beyond recognition.

    • @theduke7539
      @theduke7539 3 месяца назад

      @MrQuest0 HeLa cells still retain the correct genome. Matter of fact, her genome was published publicly in 2013 from a fresh examination, its all still preserved, thats why HeLa cells are so unique. While the method of immortality her cells use can be replicated now, allowing sources other than HeLa cells for research, HeLa cells are still the best and most stable ever discovered, all because of a quirk in her genes that hasnt been thoroughly identified. Theoretically, if such a gene could be isolated, it would be possible to halt the aging process by making all cells reproduce perfectly with no degredation from the Hayflick limit.

    • @jamesfahey4508

      @@calvinallen3424 Not quite. The victim was killed because he was going to cooperate with said pharmaceutical company. Aside from profiting off the grandfathers cells, they were taking blood samples from the grandfathers whole family (for reasons). Family was trying to sue but the desperate dad broke rank and was going to take money from the company in exchange for blood. Fight between the dad, a cousin, and a PI used by the company to find relatives saw dad get stabbed. Cousin took a plea deal in exchange for the company paying out $10 million to the family
