I've been KBing for about two months now and just began to feel comfortable enough to try snatching. I've been doing thumb back on swings and cleans. I was wondering about the various thumb positions because I do struggle to tame the arc and rotation of the bell sometimes. I will try what you suggest here! 👍
I've been having trouble avoiding over rotating my shoulders on my single arm swings. I've been doing them thumb back... It didn't dawn on me that that was causing so much rotation. Now I feel dumb for not having seen it. Tried a few sets today thumb in the 45 position (between forward and neutral.) Boy what a difference! Thanks a ton for this video, so much happier with my single arm swings now
Great content - amazing that a 4-minute video can help me start fixing problems I hadn't been able to isolate! And bummed that the combination of COVID and my learning timeline on KBs seems to mean I've missed the opportunity to drive across the bridge and get a couple of training sessions with you in person, to see what else could be fixed!
This is a great video, I like the demonstration of shoulder rotation without bells. For single bell snatch and clean I like a barbell grip, tried the thumb forward but it just didn't work for me (put a lot more stress on the elbow to keep that connection with the hip) even though I know it saves the grip more because you're not rotating the shoulders. Double bell (LC or DHS) thumb forward all the way 🙂
I think it's one of the beauties of KB, you can do what feels the most natural/comfortable for you. Personally I do it the same as you, somewhere between thumb forward and neutral. Pointing the thumb back feels unnatural to me as does thumb fully forward. I also like a little rotation because it feels like I can get a little more power but that may just be a mental thing.
Very helpful video! I'm one of those that has been having a hard time performing smooth cleans, but probably for the reasons that you mentioned in the video, my snatches aren't too bad (or don't feel bad at all, my cleans I can tell need work).
I saw this challenge and thought of you. If you have room in your training you should try it For time (guy in video got 6:46, I got 8:00) It's with a 24kg bell 5 snatches L 5 thrusters L 5 snatches R 5 thrusters R 10 snatches L 10 thrusters L 10 snatches R 10 thrusters R 15 snatches L 15 thrusters L 15 snatches R 15 thrusters R 20 snatches L 20 thrusters L 20 Snatxges R 20 thrusters R
Maybe its because my foundation of strength training is with barbells but I have tried the thumb back for cleans and I just cant seem to force myself to keep it that way during the set. I can get the first couple but I always end up but with the thumb neutral. For my swings I am almost always doing two hand swings so its not really an option there and when I snatch I still prefer a bar if that is an option (if its not I will just do swings).

Yeah snatch gives more time to adjust.
I like thumbs forward for double cleans - i only do single bell snatches but for some reason it "feels" better thumb back.
Grazie
