  • Hi, my name is Jim Egan, professional photographer and curator of the Newport Tower Museum.
I've been studying this mysterious stone-and-mortar Tower in Newport Rhode Island for the past 20 years and have found conclusive evidence that it was designed in the year 1583 by the English polymath John Dee to be the city center of the first Elizabethan colony in the New World.
It's a combination of Classical Architecture, a circular Temple as discussed by Vitruvius in 25 BC, and Christian Architecture, a "replica" of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, built in 325 AD by Emperor Constantine, to protect the tomb of Jesus.
This classical-church-tower also functioned as a horologium, a building that keeps track of time, with three internal camera-obscura solar-disc calendar-rooms to help determine the correct date of Easter for the English version of the Gregorian Calendar Reform of 1583.
For the full story, come visit the Newport Tower Museum, just 50 steps northeast of the only English Renaissance Building in America.

I'm from Colorado and I came to Somerset, Mass. to visit a relative. I went to see the sights in Newport today, for the first time, and randomly drove up the street that the tower is on. I immediately recognized it from Scott Wolter's, America Unearthed, tv show a few years ago. What a surprise! I walked around it and remembered the egg shaped rock above one of the arches. I knew this tower was in New England somewhere, but it was nice to stumble onto it today. I love the rich, history around here and I hope to be back soon.

I'm early into my research on this building but I believe this building is many years older than the curator claims.

More like, 'I'm early into my binge-watching of America Unearthed.'

Nope, sorry - try again. The archeological studies are available through the local historical society.

Which theory do you prefer early in your research as compared to his after two decades? Vikings, Chinese, aliens...?

A curator and photographer knows about architecture? Been around the world looking at many ancient and medieval stone architecture?

Rubbish. Sorry, but this is absolute fantastical story telling. I have seen the type of mill in the UK that the Newport structure was modelled after. Newport’s old mill was built using more modest materials, but it was meant as a work horse for the Arnold farm. Oh, and Mr.Egan, I can choose multiple homes and even churches in town that will provide windows which align with certain celestial events. I believe Sir, your 15 minutes are up. Let’s start telling history as it was, rather than what we wished it were.

And your credentials are you walked around town?

@@653j521 No, my credentials are holding a doctorate in history and being a researcher of the Tower that has lived in Newport for many years. Armchair historians are just looking for their 15 mins or to add credence to something they would really like to be true. For that matter so would I, but the truth is, the archeological and historical evidence just do not make the ties to Vikings, Chinese, or early explorers plausible.

And what is your brilliant explanation? You have NO idea the amount of research this amazing guy has done on this structure!!! Have you been to the Tower Museum? If not go!!
