Rubbish. Sorry, but this is absolute fantastical story telling. I have seen the type of mill in the UK that the Newport structure was modelled after. Newport’s old mill was built using more modest materials, but it was meant as a work horse for the Arnold farm. Oh, and Mr.Egan, I can choose multiple homes and even churches in town that will provide windows which align with certain celestial events. I believe Sir, your 15 minutes are up. Let’s start telling history as it was, rather than what we wished it were.

This presentation explains the colonial history of Cuttyhunk Island quite well. Was wondering if a French encampment predated Gosnold's arrival?

If the original explorers hadn't been so hell bent on wiping out the people and all their architecture everywhere they found them, we would know the history of all these things. We wouldn't have government making up stories and everyone guessing what used to be !

Sounds like at the very least it was never a windmill. It does evidence building techniques which indicate that it is considerably older. And even has indications to the east of the tower that it once had a rectangular building attached to it. And there's more than enough evidence that indicate the Knights Templar were coming to this country in the 1300s. And the first Knights Templar to publicize the finding of what became the United States, Christopher Columbus. I do like the concept of it being an observatory. Because it does have mechanisms built on to What's Left of it did indicate that that's exactly what it was. Devices which would be unnecessary on a windmill.

I'm from Colorado and I came to Somerset, Mass. to visit a relative. I went to see the sights in Newport today, for the first time, and randomly drove up the street that the tower is on. I immediately recognized it from Scott Wolter's, America Unearthed, tv show a few years ago. What a surprise! I walked around it and remembered the egg shaped rock above one of the arches. I knew this tower was in New England somewhere, but it was nice to stumble onto it today. I love the rich, history around here and I hope to be back soon.

It was believed that he was quoting Sir Thomas Moore's "Utopia" while aboard the Squirrel during a bad storm off of the Azores. It would seem as though he was making reference to the tumultuous sea and perhaps the height of the waves . The ship and Gilbert were lost in the storm.
