@@thishominid871 Agreed. But the term "regulatory capture" suggests that the agency-in-question was set up with good intentions, and then taken-over. But the competition-eliminating effects of regulation are so obvious that I suspect ALL regulatory agencies were set up with that end goal in mind (i.e. enriching certain well-connected groups through regulation).

    • @futilelaneswapper
      @futilelaneswapper 3 года назад +16

No we don’t and won’t have herd immunity ever. There is too much breakthrough infection with delta. The reason antibody levels are so high is that Covid is now endemic in the UK. And folk get sick within two to three days rather than ten, as with alpha. So it is spreading more quickly but the impact on the vaccinated is not nearly as pronounced as in those who haven’t. John says it isn’t looking good but actually it isn’t nearly as bad as it seems. We need constant exposure to the virus to build long term resistance. This is why people are worried about flu this year, as a population we haven’t had exposure to the flu virus for more than 12 months and as a result we are much more at risk. Get vaccinated then go about your normal life is the best thing to do.

What herd immunity means at this point is we should see less and less people with severe symptoms in the coming months - breakthrough and reinfections will be our boosters. The hospital numbers are not recorded correctly . If you go into hospital with a heart issue and test negative when you first arrive but three days later test positive because you picked up covid in hospital (this is happening a lot so just proves the masks and ppe are not that effective) you are recorded as a covid hospital admission! Just like if you die for any reason 28days after a positive covid test result you are counted as a covid death. If these numbers were sorted out things would look very different . My father 92yrs old went into hospital with a heart attack , tested negative for covid then caught covid 4 days later or I should say tested positive but had no symptoms! he died two days later of a massive heart attack and yes guess what he is recorded as a covid death. The whole thing is f**ked up.

They are ONLY focusing on hospitalization and vaccine and encouraging people to gather in restaurants and other high risk indoor areas after vaccination because they think that is the only way to increase vaccination. Doctors are going on masse on the media adn encouraging Canadians to do this. I have no idea how that is consistent with the hippocratic oath. They are completely ignoring long covid. In fact they are banning early treatment that has been shown around the world to work in some cases at preventing long covid. Truly immoral, horrific, anti-scientific, anti-human, and barbaric on the part of Canada.
More and more research and practical clinical experience is showing that giving safe off label drugs such as ivermectin and fluvoxamine and reduce chances of long covid because these types of drugs have shown to reduce inflammation and micro clotting from the virus. Vaccines do not do this: an Israeli study showed 1 in 5 fully vaccinated healthcare workers who had breakthrough mild or asymptomatic infection continued to have long covid for 6 weeks and counting at the time of the study. Canada is immorally banning access to cheap and available treatment for patients. This is a equivalent to a crime against humanity in my opinion.

The only thing ,in my humble opinion of intensivist with 40 years of experience ,is that there are not two single individuals who have the same genome and( above all) have the same conditions of exposures to the virus. This is not a product of an industry that is producing identical products. We cannot transfer the same kind of reasoning to Biology. Stochastic s is good in statistics but Chaos in more appropriate in Biologiy.Besides we have a semantic problem in trying to describe the reality. Using the same words to describe different phenomena. The only affirmation I feel to sustain is that vaccination, whatever it is( at some price, but I have never seen a coin with just one face),decreases the seriousness of the alteration( someone want define it disease) in the delicate balance of the hundreds of thousand and more of processes that we tend to define as Health. So our abstractions to define any processes are destined to be contradicted. Remember Feynman. Anything can be assumed to be true up to the very moment it is demonstrated not to be not true. Epstemiology should be studied in any school. It would make us less arrogant in our convinctions.

Well, applying the scientific method to science itself would make us stop scientific endeavors altogether The history of science learns us that 99% of all held believes (theories) in the past are untrue today. So by generalizing over this data we must rationally conclude that 99% ot the theories held today are untrue. The fact that we did not stop doing science means science is not really driven by rationality but rather by curiosity, the love for puzzles and social competition. Bit like chess; looks very rational but a complete irrational waste of time when you have nothing to eat. Technique on the other hand gave us an evolutionary advantage.

Exactly, there's probably a financial incentive. As far as the science goes, as time goes on, anti-body levels will wane. This will increase the chances of a "breakthrough infection". But the B and T memory cells remain and will fight it off almost effortlessly if it encounters it. So although cases in Chile are increasing, what matters is the number of people in hospital. There's definitely a financial incentive on Pfizer/Moderna's part, but it's important to realize why cases are going up. It's not that the vaccines are ineffective, Pfizer/Moderna are just banging this drum about antibodies, when B and T memory cells are a bigger factor in preventing hospitalization. The immune system is multilayered. Sure, antibody levels are important in reducing the risk of infection, but antibody levels are not the most important aspect of immunity, at least in respect to hositalization.

Finaly. for the price of one Pfizer shot you can buy three to five Sinovac vaccines. That can be spread out over time to produce a far better immune response than one shot of the Pfizer would.

To see if a patient's immunity is still working, a CBC+DIFF and CD4:CD8 test, and other blood tests can be used to check White Blood Cell counts, and CD8 levels. I know that there is no approved vaccine widely available because that fact would dictate, by law, the discontinuation of all other vaccine EUAs. Since this pandemic is clearly not exclusively about making a treasure hoard of money, the likes of which would draw a fire drake from the north, I’m baffled as to why we persist in this state. When exactly can we expect the approved vaccine to begin being administered? I’ve no doubt our U.S. soldiers would like to know since they have been mandated to receive this approved vaccine and I do believe they think they are getting it……but are they indeed? So many questions about this period we are in at this moment.

I come here for a walk through of statistical medicine. Delivered at a pace.
As an engineer I need to use and understand such statistics and data sets.
There seems to me however to be a few leaps into the dark from the select data used.
There must be significant background knowledge at play to make statements such as: the infection of one age group from another being apparent.
Why do we rush past the death rate to "within 28 days of a positive test" and yet if over 90% of the population have antibodies, and everyone admitted to hospital is routinely tested with anything like a reliable test, well, most NHS inmates are going to test positive and we don't tend to go in to hospital if paracetamol is going to fix us.
The net result I can jump to. Almost all hospital deaths are going to have tested positive for COVID 19. But what did they die of?
Tell us about excess deaths and state there have indeed been during the pandemic. You did that. In a considered way. 👍
Now granulate the cause of death. Have there been more heart attacks or strokes this year in the vulnerability groups. Have more people been shot by police ?
You can't have it both ways. Just because there is a virus going about does not make it significantly responsible for excess mortality.
ONS data can directly attribute monthly deaths to seasonal flu. But now noone can directly attribute deaths to COVID 19.
Not publicly it would seem. The WHO guidance for death certificates during the pandemic makes interesting reading too.
    It's on their website.
Is the vaccine working? You said it yourself. It's too early to tell. That cuts both ways folks.
Why should I have my children injected where there is no evidence either way?
But at least it will only be another three or four Months before we can start to tell. There is a false summit if ever there was yet another one.
Good luck everyone. We need it.

I am not a medic. I've learned most of what I know about this pandemic and coronavirus from Dr John. But today's talk leaves me with, what seems like, logical loose ends!
Yes I take it that immunity is far more complex than just what the level of antibodies suggests. Many times Dr John has said that antibodies do not last as long as T-cells amongst other things. If 93% of the population have measurable antibodies, logic would suggest that a similar number would also have T-cells present. Yet those antibodies and T-cells are not yet inducing 'herd-immunity'. Prof Spector suggested that AT LEAST 85% immunity levels (either naturally or via jabs) would be needed to induce 'herd-immunity'. Yet the 93% antibodies (and presumably T-cells) are NOT yet inducing 'herd-immunity'. And we have 20% of total infections amongst the 2x jabbed.
I'm sorry, but I don't see the logic in Dr John's suggestion that at the end of the year, and into the new year, he expects 'herd-immunity' to be taking over. Yes I sincerely hope it does. We've all had enough of this virus, and the shocking levels of deaths, hospitalisations and LongCovid. But as Dr John always emphasizes, we follow the science. As I understand it, then science is NOT suggesting that 'herd-immunity' will be our 'saviour'.

This is why I've been trying to correct this mindset since March 2020. There is no such thing as herd immunity with this virus and any attempts to operate under the assumption the virus came from China in Jan of 2020 or that it is a one time infection should have been immediately obvious that it was incorrect. Anyone who holds these beliefs can never make sense of the data or has to twist or ignore other data to try and reach a conclusion which still doesn't make sense.
What I was saying in March of 2020 was not only bang on correct then but my predictions have all continued to come true and not a single piece of information has come out that wasn't already answered in my original explanation.
Has been extremely frustrating knowing without a doubt I was 100% correct and watching people who should know better continue to disagree while floating nonsense theories in order to paint themselves an optimistic picture for the outcome.

I do not consider a death rate of 0.2% to be a shocking level. I think that is very good considering it is a new virus and shows how most peoples amazing immune systems are doing a very good job.
We accept flu deaths every year and now we have to accept deaths from this new virus.

A question.... Does vaccine escape give more chances for vaccine resistance and mutations so if you have high prevalence for contracting the virus after double dose and boosters as seen in Israel. Would it have not be better to have concentrated on the vulnerable at the outset and concentrated on therapeutics fr complication in the younger ones, that were not at so much risk thereby letting people get infected and developing natural immunity. Isn't mariks disease in chickens a result of vaccine escape? Yep, especially when the cases include the so-called asymptomatic which used to be called healthy individuals in the past because all of us can have viruses and bacteria but not have the viral load to infect others. The problem is the magnification required by those tests that can also create false positives. And both the vaxxed and unvaxxed can get infected and transmit the virus so what do people expect about the number of cases. Last year it was about deaths but now it has to be cases because not so many died because of Covid this year and the vaxxed who died of Covid are as much as possible are being put under wraps. Plus, many are recovering just like last year. Getting Covid is not the same as dying automatically. Some will die and there is a reason why but many more will survive it and have natural immunity later on like my medical doctor brother who refuses to take the Covid jabs.

“It is not realistic to achieve herd immunity, understood as meaning that we will not see any spread of infection at all”, SSI’s acting academic director Tyra Grove Krause told the newspaper BT.
Herd immunity means that enough people are immune to infection from an illness that its reproduction number or R-rate (the number of people each infected person infects) falls below one, without any other anti-infection measures in place.
Before the emergence of more contagious variants such as the Alpha and Delta strains, estimates placed the threshold for herd immunity at between 60 to 70 percent of the population. However, the growing dominance of the Delta strain, which is also more apt at infecting people who are vaccinated, has challenged this calculus.
“If the vaccines were 100 percent effective against the variants that are in play now, and we had 100 percent vaccination coverage among those who are 12 years and older, then we could talk about achieving actual herd immunity against the Delta variant”, Krause said. “But unfortunately this is not the reality, we cannot achieve that”.

Years of useful life to someone is difficult to quantify. If a person is 82 and has a very large close family, children and grandchildren, etc, those family members are the beneficiaries of useful life. If they only had 5 years left, say, but were important to 30 close relatives… doesn’t that matter? Many people would have liked 5 years more with their grandparent or parent if that relationship was close and important. My great uncle hung on for another year after a broken hip in the nursing home at the age of 91 lived to be 92. Many family members visited him every day if not at least once a week over that period. While only 1 year of useful life, multiply it by many people. In the US he had surgery even tho he was 91. Would that happen in the UK if someone calculated his useful life as not worth it?

Had a scare at work 10 day's ago.
Received a ph call late one night at home from our employer (both the lady & I work for the same)
An exposure to a positive case at work....great! . So at 11pm we're at work clearing all food stuffs, freezing what we could, ditching what won't last, giving the kitchen a FULL once over. We get back to bed by 3am, awake again at 6.30, coffee, yawn & off to line up for testing.
Ok.....30+ employees are getting tested all over the city & waiting the outcome.
The people affected by direct exposure are obviously in 14 day quarantine.
What I truly don't understand is - those not directly involved only need a negative result & yet! the workplace is a smallish sealed environment with communal facilities & constant staff interaction.
All this hoo ha took 7 days to sort out, including professional "deep clean" ($9000).
A clearance certificate was issued by the DHHS & at this point no more positive cases.
But I simply don't understand how the Dept can class one employee a close contact & others to not to be when we work so closely 🤷‍♂️

Those sort of numbers are just based on population level analysis, so they ignore all the detail about the people apart from the factors being identified in the study. I wouldn't read too much into them because they certainly aren't applicable to an individual. Even if the average person's risk of being hospitalized by Covid is reduced by X% by vaccination, that doesn't mean YOUR risk will reduce by the same amount. Your personal risk depends on your age, health, comorbidities, lifestyle, behaviour etc. as well. Even the effectiveness of masks if massively affected by many factors which are hard to quantify (design of mask, how it is worn, how often it is changed, number of people you come into contact with, social distancing etc).

Now there was also a spike in 1996-2000 .
Since 2000, about 92000 have died each year. But death depends on how many people where born 90 years ago.. if many people where born 90 years ago.. many people will die this year.. since the life expectancy is around 80-100 years

It’s a rather brutal calculation and it could work albeit with a couple of rather big ifs.
