@@henryhill6126 lol good one! I always thought about designing a mousetrap with a bullseye and a catapult. 5 pts for a bullseye, 3 points for the 2nd ring, 1 point for the outer ring hahaha
If you live in a condo or an apartment in the city, catching a few mice and rats probably helps you sleep better at night. If you live rural, like Shawn, catching 6 rats means there are about 600 more just outside the barn. Bottom line is: You'll never get rid of them. That's why mousetrap companies and mousetrap YT channels will never die. Great entertainment, though!
There's a video here on RUclips of a guy owning a homestead, he claims he got rid of his mouse/rat infestation using many baits with flour and sugar mixed with baking soda.
@@tpl608 I thought the same thing when he said he was putting it in a separate video only not joking. and figured he's thinning his content out to make more videos.
If the final product has a hood over the top...that will guide the rats into the trap without the chance of jumping out. I noticed a few times they were able to jump to the side frame.
Looks promising. It needs a way to keep them off the sides as a few scrambled to safety. Probably could use a weak magnet in the back to give it a little more "surprise" factor.
I love that label. "Rat Bait. Do not drink." I've just got this mental image of some guy panicking as a crazed rat tries to force itself down his throat.
My family owns a fabrication company with tons of scrap aluminum sheets. Guess I know what I'm building this week. I think a dome would be good over the bait station and sides so the rodents can't walk along the sides or jump off.
I appreciate that you let the native species go. One of the worst invasive species is the European House Sparrow. They may be small, but they do a number on native birds. You should test a couple of different Sparrow traps.
@Ken Fullman I wish we could give them back. They push our native birds out of the best nesting sites and they poop so much that many shops have to call us to do an exclusion and clean up job.
@Ken Fullman I wish we could. It's a very similar situation, except that our squirrels are not at all endangered. I believe you have some of our Crayfish as well.
Seems to work very well, but needs a fix to prevent them from jumping to safety out the side rims. Congratulations to the inventor, though, always nice to see people coming out with products that solve problems. Thank you for the video.
This reminds me of what my grandparents used to do against rats. They had a pretty similar trap. If you leave them in there through for a while without food they're going to fight among eachother. The winner will eat the losers till only one is left. That one will be a cannibal for life and will eat every rat and mouse in a two miles radius. After WW2, when rat poison was too expensive, people did this to get rid of the rising rat population in eastern Europe. Wouldn't recommend this nowadays through if you don't want PETA to knock on your door.
After seeing a rat use a stick to set off a regular rat trap, I think it'd be fantastic to see a rat do something similar with a stick to jam up the tipping mechanism.
Shawn, we've got the roof rats here in AZ , walk the plank, or this one, I'm getting as many every night as I set Vctors. Need something that would work during the summer when we leave, snowbirds. I'll get a one way door out of a barrel bottom via a 4" pipe into a grave. Thanks
I've built or purchased just about every design of trap I could find. The traps all work. The issue is getting vermin to use them. I hardly ever catch anything.
I'm so annoyed!! I've been a subscriber to your channel for YEARS! I thought you had greatly slowed down with uploads, but it turns out they just weren't showing up on my subscriber page. Anyway... I'm happy you haven't stopped uploading videos!! Great content!
I think the inventer needs to add vertical walls on the sides (where the pivot points are). - Nice trap - Cheers! No reason this couldn't work for squirrels with a little refinement!
It would probably work better as it would make the rats feel more comfortable and not be exposed to unknown dangers from up high. Of course, you do have to make a hole like that, and some people wouldn't find that worthwhile.
@@jyoster6447 oh! The effort to dig a giant hole to get one or two more rats probably is not worth the effort. But, it would be a cool experiment. Besides, I know that area is more loam than rock so the digging would go pretty quick.
Some rats I’ve seen on a channel from Canada that seem to live in abandoned mines have even bushier tails. I’m wondering what kind of rat those are. They look similar to your pack rats. On a channel called Exploring Abandoned Mines.
If you put slick sides on the trap, the rats can't get off to the sides. Also, on the top too. Sort of a forcing cone design. Don't let them get a chance to turnaround in time before they fall into the bucket. I would be happy to beta test the design. 😉
I haven't seen your posts. I'm going on my 5th or so trap and I have developed a love hate relationship with one Brown Rat. He is a clever boy .Almost a tool maker . Thank you for the content
The plate could be more narrow and then have a longer rod attached to the two side supports extend to the edge of the barrel so the rats can't escape by jumping onto the side supports.
so Shawn - just found you - Thank You. Which trap would you say is between for rats? Thats what. mostly have. And will they also work with mice, which I only have occasionally. I'm trying to track your different videos and can't fins your final verdict for rats. Thank you !
I'd toss some vegetable oil into the bottom of the barrel to keep the rats from trying to jump out. A couple of inches of water would turn it into a kill trap.
I tried to buy traps from the inventor, and after a lot of back and forth he said he wasn’t going forward with the business. That was about a month ago, so not sure where he is with the business now.
Hey Shawn. I wonder why RUclips won't allow the your videos to show the mice being killed by the traps, but I just watched a video of minx and dogs violantly killing and tearing apart rats on a farm. The video has over 26 million views. What's your thoughts on this?
Dusky footed wood rats are almost a little cute as far as rats go. Also, I feel like mice are getting much smarter than they were just a decade ago. They also seem to be getting much bolder.
If rats are smarter than mice, why did the one rat see the trap door work twice, then try to walk on it anyway. Shawn's mice wouldn't do that, unless required by their union contract.
That was a native pack rat. It was smarter than the others, probably from watching Mousetrap Monday. It knew Shawn would release it and wanted its moment of fame on RUclips.
It looks like it needs a limiter as to how far it will tilt because it got up to the balance point at one time. Additionally I’ve watched rat traps on other videos and they had trained rats. They caught about 20 rats in 44 seconds. How many mice and rats do you have in that place?

'They're so clever' I thought to myself as that one rat avoided the trap not once but twice, until he went for the third time and fell in.
yes they are very clever but if you know rats they are also VERY VERY greedy LOL
One rat _almost_ avoided getting caught _twice_ but still fell in after making it move more than once. Must've _really_ wanted that peanut butter.
Note: make sure you put your ramp in the middle of the trap not off to the side. That way the rats are more prone to walk on the trap NOT the side frame.
The perfect spot should be marked with a bullseye or cross bones for very dumb rats and mice.

Some of those rats are alarmingly huge...

Looks like it will work good with a guide.
bingo, agree 100%
It would be cool if the frame was not flat. If it was sloped, the rats would try to jump on it and not be able to stay on the angled ramp.
@@Cooldudewhotellsamazingjokes or you could put spikes on the frame edge ;-)
Or just place the mechanism in the barrel, about a foot below the rim, with a hole cut out for an entrance.

Me too. I love this channel!

rats are smart enough to not set off most traps but aren't smart enough to warn the others that it's a trap?? 🤣
clearly the 1 rat is telling the second rat to send more food down, lol ;p
Clip clothes pins all around the edges of the bucket so that they don't walk on the edges of the bucket.
My middle school shop teacher used to fill the bottom of the barrel with a foot of water with the same trap and leave it out all night
I love that label. "Rat Bait. Do not drink." I've just got this mental image of some guy panicking as a crazed rat tries to force itself down his throat.
Well that mental imagery certainly won't haunt my dreams.
With the way that third one got dunked, the idea that rats are smarter than mice is debatable lol.
That screeching of rats could be used as a bird sound in a Birdemic movie!
yeah my house cats about dived on me once that started, lol.
Love these videos keep on going my dude!
Awesome video. I wish I was brave enough to reach into a barrel of live rats. Maybe if I had a Hazmat suit, otherwise nope.

@Ken Fullman That seems peculiar. I would have thought of it as a doing a service. What is their reasoning behind that?
Do you think this concept could work on a larger squirrel version?
Absolutely
And what about an even larger version for raccoons?
Most squirrels would find a way out. They have a lot of MacGyver in them.
We'll just keep getting the inventor to increase the size until we have one that fits over an above-ground pool to catch rhinos and elephants.
Squirrels would get out, Fenn traps deal with squirrels.
