Funny how Gen 2 is so much more robust when it comes to error handling. Battles and healing are just skipped rather than glitching up your game.
And now we know Missingno has the cry of the most powerful, most destructive being of all-Slowpoke.
Ironic thing, this video is the longest, is better edited and even answers questions of the fans, but is the one in the saga with less views.
It is truly a marvel how much more well-coded Gen II was over either Gen I *or* Gen III. Truly and tragically ahead of its time.

They seem to have done a better job handling errors in gen 2. But then the same gen 1 errors came back in gen 3.
In Generation 1, I think the healing Pokemon glitch is caused by this kind of code:
count = 1
while count < pokemon
add ball id(count)
play sound "healbleep"
count = count + 1
predef(7)
play sound "pokemonhealcompletion"
play event id(pokemon)
Here, pokemon is the number of Pokemon you have, and count is the variable that counts to the number of Pokemon you have. The while loop repeats the action until the counting variable equals the number of Pokemon you have. Predef runs predefined commands (This is a reference to debug item) The "add ball" command makes a ball appear, and the ID is where the ball should appear. The "playsound" command plays sounds, and the event command does an event (i.e: a reset, the Safari Game being over)
When pokemon = 0, the only thing that can make count go to zero is integer overflow. So count counts all the way to 255, and then goes back down to 0, so the while loop doesn't repeat anymore. The ball ids also act a little glitchy, with 4 glitchy tiles appearing every time a Pokemon heals after 6. Then, it plays the "pokemonhealcompletion" sound like normal, then it plays Event 0, which is resetting the game. Oddly, this method of resetting doesn't make the player go away until the intro scene starts.
In Generation 2, count starts at 0, so the glitch doesn't work.
In Generation 3, count starts at 1 again, so the glitch works, but because both the "pokemon" variable and the "count" variable have upgraded to a 16-bit variable, instead of an 8-bit variable in previous games, the balls will actually go up to 65536.
+weee50 Yeah, I agree with you, I think this is the most likely reason that the glitch occurs. Somewhere in the giant mass of comments on the part 1 video, there's a comment thread talking about the Pokecenter glitch, and I give a very similar theory. Although, I assumed the worst case scenario for gen 3, and stated that they might be using an unsigned 32-bit variable, in which case it might take as many as 4-billion pokeballs for the scene to end. That would be wasteful though, so I think your 16-bit theory is more plausible -- and that's good news, because technically that's a small enough amount that you could wait it out if you were patient enough. Emulating the game at 700% speed boost, it'd probably take about an hour.
Maybe I'll leave the game running overnight sometime and see if it ever stops healing...

I just checked some of these out. For the Pokemon Contest, the game considers your non-existent Pokemon to be fainted, so the receptionist will not let you join the contest, because your Pokemon is not "fit" to participate. For double battles, the trainers will refuse to fight you because you have less than two Pokemon. While investigating the Mirror Move one, I stumbled upon an entire rabbit hole of glitches I've never seen before, easily enough to make a Part 4 of this series...

Uh.... no, not really. I thought I came up with something original. Guess I didn't.
8:41 The glitch pokemon is indeed Missingno. When you enter a battle with no Pokemon, the game is programmed to release Pokemon #000, which is Missingno. This is to prevent a catastrophic failure from not having any Pokemon data to load. Missingno. is not a Pokegod or a scrapped Pokemon, except of course in fans' headcanons. It is simply an exception handler. It seems that Gen II was programmed a bit differently to handle having 0 Pokemon without glitchy side effects. There must be a subroutine to check if there are Pokemon in your team before the battle starts, and if there isn't any, it just cuts back to the overworld.
Nurse Joy : uh boss, he has more pokemon than our machine can handle
Boss : Doesn't matter, just put them on the floor

Dude, you REALLY gotta speed up the annoying parts. Even when watching at 2x speed, it seems like it should be even faster at some points. Unnecessary chat boxes taking ages to go, etc etc.

As an addition, in Gen 2 games on the GameBoy Color version the colors will glitch every time you join a battle, which I've tested (I've made a video about it in case somebody wants to see)

Plot twist: the Channeler was a Nurse Joy that got fired when she neglently killed a pokémon that was put under her care. Feeling the weight of that death over her conscience, she desired to compensate her mistake and keep working on healing pokémon, but she wasn't allowed as a Nurse Joy anymore. So she moved to the tower, became a Channeler, and now stays next to the tomb of the deceased pokémon to guard its soul and grant it the deserved rest, while healing any passerby on her magic rune circle. This way she kept doing what she desired the most while looking to compensate her actions in some way.

Also in Gen 2 only, the battle will immediately end if you try to battle without any Pokémon. In Gen 1, you send out a glitch, corrupted Pokémon. In Gen 3, you send out an unknown Pokémon and immediately blackout after selecting the attack button

I believe that the Pokémon center glitch should stop at 256 sound effects. 256 is the maximum value in 8-bit computing. In 16-bit games, it would be 65,536, in 32-bit games, it would be 2,147,483,647. I'm not sure how many bits the gen 2 game is; I believe it's 16 though, so that would mean you'd have to leave it up for 18-19 hours for it to run though all of the numbers. I'd like to see what would happen if anything when it gets to that amount in the 16-bit games.

It seems in the first game it reads garbage data as Pokémon, in the 2nd game it has a very good error handler, and in the 3rd game it has a semi-good error handler

In Gen 1 and 3, If you try to heal without Pokémon, the glitch parts will appear and will take a long time to stop. In Gen 2, nothing happens if you try to heal without Pokémon

I saw a complex glitch in pokemon yellow where you can reach the pokemon tower healing pad directly. The results will be different.

I have another idea-- What happens when you go into the upper floor of Pokemon Center and then use the wi-fi battles or trades, etc. without any Pokemon? and another thing--In Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald when you are seeing the credits, there are pictures of the pokemon that we have caught and/or evolved. If you speed up the Pokemon center in any game, you can actually eventually get to play again. The only problem is gen 3.
See, I've heard that when you try to heal your Pokemon without Pokemon, nurse joy just assumes you have every missingno in your party (they were used to occupy extra space for Pokemon they didn't need), which isn't actually THAT bad, since there are only 159 missingno (hence why the game crashed when you tried to look at Pokemon above 210 in the pokedex)
"That's all well and good, but what ABOUT gen 3?" You may ask. Well, in gen 3 missingno occupies something like >10,000 Pokemon spaces, sooooo you'd be waiting there for quite some time
