The trials and tribulations of living off grid, never a dull moment. Sorry to hear of the problems. Wishing you all the best during this holiday season.
He was just checking on the chickens…. If he gets the chance he’d eat them. Funny watching it move around but if it continues I’ll need to address it. Take care…
Always lots to do/keep up! The snow is beautiful! Thanks for sharing this video! Be safe and warm! Take care of those chickens, that bobcat is interested!! Merry Christmas friend!
Thanks for the well wishes! The bobcat’s been coming around a couple nights now. I’ll need to keep watch. From now on each day will get brighter, literally.
Thanxx for posting again. I love the honesty you have about the trials of your semi-off-grid life, very real. I've seen some Bobcats before, but that's a big guy. I'm assuming, like most species of cat, a big head and a big body would probably denote a male. Stay safe and keep warm. Look forward to the next one, Mike in Utah.
Wishing you the Blessings of the Season! That is quite the snowblower you have there…I can see why you like it! That bobcat looks to be very determined to get at the chickens…he’s a big one…I’m glad you disabled the coop door😊. Seems like it’s always something, doesn’t it?
Have learned to roll with what life throws at me. Learned to be flexible as much as possible. Looking at the videos again of the cats I think there were two. A smaller one by the cabin and a larger one by the coop. Happy Holidays! Good to hear from you. Take care…
Wow that’s some snowfall your video highlighted it’s not all romantic in your setting thx for showing the bobcats have a relaxing Xmas and Stacy safe. I have a 14 year old staffy cross so get it with earl bless him. Pat to coal.
Appreciate that, glad you enjoyed the video. Wishing you a relaxing Christmas as well! Snow is about a foot behind this year. Used to have about 2 feet by now. Life sometimes just takes a wrong turn. It usually always works out.
Yeah sometimes we have to burn ponderosa pine, and it's pretty sooty and leaves a lot of ash. Most folks around here have pulled the caps off their chimneys, and just run a a straight pipe, since the caps always clog up. I modified my cap by cutting the metal banding off and installing three metal posts from emt 1/2 conduit. I plugged the ends of the conduit with wood dowels and used sheet metal screws to fasten the 8" metal posts. The cap is now really open and doesn't clog up. I can burn pine, birch, red fir without any problems with the cap clogging up. For now, you should just pull that cap and run a straight pipe until you can get up there n the spring. Good luck!
It’s good to know that there are different options for dealing with this! It’s very frustrating at times, especially if you notice it first at night. Sounds like a good idea!
When I get up in the wee hours I sometimes step right into doggy regurgitation but it’s usually only water so that’s almost better, lol. I know about “those” days even though I’m not off grid. You remind me of my dad, his ingenuity in figuring just about anything out. We did a lot of outdoor things like fishing, hunting and camping. He lived up on a mountain until 3 years ago when he had a stroke and we had to move him closer to town bless his heart. He had made a turbine (wind) for power, built his own garage, chicken coop and outbuildings, my heart broke for him having to leave the piece of heaven he created, so I’m glad you’re able to overcome and keep going. I know there’s rough days but I bet you wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Sorry about your dad. Sounds like you love your dad a lot. That’s good to hear! I dread the day if it ever comes when I don’t have the ability to live my life as I choose. When I was young I lived with my grandparents. My grandfather could do anything. I always strived to be like him. He had a great influence in my life. Similar to what you and your dad have. Like your dad I choose to do the hard things because they are hard. Wouldn’t trade it for anything! Was good to hear from you!
@ my dad actually lasted up on the mountain until he turned about 80 so hopefully you have a ways to go! And for doing things just because they’re hard…the land he bought was sloped, he literally took his tractor out there and literally had to level it out enough for his house and outbuildings, lol. I do love my pops, and even after several strokes he’s still figuring things out on his own!
Glad to hear that. I’m figuring 10-15 years then I’ll probably need to do something different. Enjoyed hearing your story about your dad! It’s encouraging. Thanks!
I hear you. Had similar problems. First a big snowstorm, snowed in for 4 days, 2 with no power. A week later my neutral cable going from the pole to the house died. Killed my Toyo instantly. (I have a Toyo and a wood stove). Fortunately I had already a new Toyo in storage because the one I used was old but it wasn’t easy to get a new cable from the pole to the cabin, we had -28C, and installing a new Toyo is also not just 1 hour of work. I had help and I’m thankful. So I wish us both relaxing 2 weeks and without any bigger problems. Thank you for keeping us updated and take care!
My goodness, you had a rough week! No wonder you didn’t have time to make an evergreen bough for your front door. I really enjoyed watching the trail cam footage. That bobcat was really checking out the coop. Such patience and stealth. I experienced one chimney fire due to creosote build-up and it was very scary. The chimney pipe glowed red and it made a thrumming noise like it was possessed! Still disturbing to me years later. It sure pays to burn the right wood as you said and clean that chimney regularly.
Yes, that bobcat had me on edge. Chimney fires are terrifying, I hope yours didn’t cause too much damage! I thought about the evergreen bough…lol wondered if you were going to notice…. Take care… next video who knows…..
We've all had days like that. Ya kinda know its a bad one when you wake up cold and step in pee. Glad you got things sorted though. For sure, tomorrow will be a brighter day 😊
Wow, I'm sure your poor chickens were terrified. Your coop looks very secure so hopefully it will keep everything out.. You live quite an exciting life..
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s been snowing all day. That small size flakes. Only gotten a few inches so far. Looks like it’s going to snow all week though. Should be able to start snowshoeing soon.
Good morning. It is 6 min past 2 in South Africa. Could not sleep. The snow is so beautiful. But I would be scared with the animals walking around in the night. As long as they don't get in your house or chicken coop. But I also love your house in and outside. Enjoy your day. Take care off your self. I enjoy your videos..... Maria. Watching from South Africa. ❤
It seems like a hard life being alone out there. I hope you have friends or neighbors close by that check in on you regularly, Your place is beautiful and you have your dog and all great supplies you need to run your place, but not having cell or internet service for emergencies would scare me. Just take care of yourself and don't try to overdo things. It's hard slowing down as we age, I know because I'm 86 and too proud to let anyone know I don't have the oomph and Supergirl strength I used to have. lol Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, you certainly do have a white one, one I wish we would have in Virginia but rarely ever see.
Yes, they are beautiful… until they get too close… this one is getting too close…. Very thankful that I’m still able to do all I do. Sometimes I do get tired especially this time of year when there’s not as much sun light. From here on it’ll get lighter every day….
Well you certainly are having a White Christmas 🎄 But Bob Cats need to eat as well LOL 😊 Wondering if it's the pine that is actually plugging the chimney screen....if it is, maybe its because it isn't seasoned enough !! As you know ....no wood should go in the stove unless it tests a moisture of only in the teens ! If its in the 20's you're probably gonna have problems !! Hope you have a Merry Christmas !!!

An have a Merry Christmas my friend. Eat your fill ,nap enjoy. Slip some to the puppy dogs lol.
