More than that is that the film starts off by showing you the rules. Something is there when it's dark. You never actually get told the rules, but you completely understand them and to a degree they make you feel comfortable From those rules we make assumptions. If I'm a director of a movie and I'm a good director, my entire movie is going to revolve around what you think and it's going to include that to make a complete experience. If I've shown you this rule that something is there in the dark but it disappears when the light is on, now I've created a paradigm of what you think. If the light is on, you can drop your guard. Now that you know the rules, you need a reason to be unsettled. Just for that, they show you your first scare. It's a little bit loud but I wouldn't qualify it as a jump scare because there's not quite the same build up. You see the creature of the whole time and all it did was move, but that movement shows you that not only is it fast but in the light it doesn't just disappear. It moves. You find yourself debating. Do you keep the lights on and not know where it is? Or do you keep the lights off and watch this terrible creature? When she goes to bed and we hear the running in the hallway, we get scared again. We're led to believe the creature doesn't do anything for no reason, and it clearly is aware of the presence of the woman, so as far as we know the running could mean that it might burst through the doorway. But no. Then in a great subversion of expectations, the light starts flickering but this short film doesn't take the route of many movies. Is the creature in the room? Well not yet, and when we see the reason for the light flickering the creature didn't do that either. It was just the lamp not plugged in all the way. You almost wonder why there was no hint that the creature DID mess with the lights, it's because this film has tricked you. then finally we see a horror that chills us to the Bone. We see the creature for a brief second in full view with no darkness. Our false sense of security has been destroyed. This whole time we thought she was only limited to the dark, but now that we see nothing can stop her, we feel a dread in our stomach wondering what she will do when the lights are off

Honestly I thought her lack of response to the first sighting was odd. Sure, you'd start fiddling with the light switch afterwards, but I would expect the lady to half-jump when she sees a spooky silhouette in her house, not just stand still and give it a skeptical look. I also dislike her hiding under the covers. If the victim is a child or it has been established that the monster hunts by sight, sure, hide, but otherwise you're just allowing the monster to get the jump on you.
I saw this video when it first came out 8 years ago, and I just saw the movie. This original short still holds up SO well today. This is the pinnacle of horror.
The feature is great. There are so few memorable horror films released each year, but it's definitely one of them. The short is based around such a fantastically novel concept. When Blumhouse asked him to expand on the idea for a feature, it would've been so easy to not get it right. It's a small miracle the film works as well as does
That's because this is the same director - this short film going viral is what sent him to Hollywood to film Lights Out. He also directed Annabelle: Creation and Shazam!.
this gave me the chills big time. I don't know why anyone wastes there time and money watching teenagers bitch about their relationships with slow dialogue, and tension building when real scary stuff comes from short films. The pacing is just right and when it's finished it has you both freaked out and makes you ask tones of questions
Danielle Brandt the problem is not in the length but in the way horror directors in hollywood like to reinterpret things. They endup copying the copy from the copy of The Exorcist. If they knew half of movie making the director of this short film knows. We wouldn't be talking about this
@BlobbyTheWanderingFish i didn't, this changes things a bit... i really don't think he's a bad director, i would say however, that the film was a production cashgrab and it wouldn't surprise me that he would've taken the job more as a job than an actual proyect... anyways, thanks for the info

this must be one of the coolest horror-movie/short film I've seen:) and so cool that it's a Scandinavian movie:) getting inspired to make my own scary movie :)
This is what Horror Movies are meant to be! No stupid loud jumpscares, the frightening things are happening inside your head BEFORE things are happening onscreen!
I mean, I doubt she'd run into the hallway where she saw the ghost but yeah, she realistically wouldn't go right to bed. In real life, a person would probably just stand panicking in their room until they got murdered by the ghost lol.
Yearlaren Actually makes plenty of sense. A normal, relatively well adjusted person seeing a strange figure in the dark that doesn't obey rational logic, doesn't immediately assume it is a ghost, as there is not enough evidence behind ghosts for them to be real, in the concrete sense. So I'd imagine you wouldn't run out of your house screaming that a ghost is trying to kill you, most people would assume you're a loon. As for the second part, people respond differently when in stressful situations. Fight or flight, you understand.
I'm so glad they're making a movie based off of this. The idea is genius, and I'm very happy for the woman who made this video, and who made this idea a reality. I hope you live a very happy life!

Hey David, I want to tell you a story of how you were an encouragement to me and a good friend of mine. My wife and I befriended this guy who's in prison for 7 years because he got mixed up in drugs and something terrible happened. We have been visiting him regularly for the last 5 years. He loves movies, especially horror, and I shoot horror shorts so he loves hearing about my stories. I actually turned one of my shorts into a comic book just so I could send it to him for Christmas one year since he can't watch them. A few years ago I told him about you and about Lights Out the short. I shared the story of how it brought you to Hollywood and how you made a feature based off of it. I also mentioned how much of an encouragement you are to me, an old guy, who got started in the filmmaking game late but one day I hope to shoot the feature of one of my comedy/horror shorts. Well, tonight we got an unexpected call from prison. We were actually a little scared because his mom has COVID. But he was all excited about this movie he got to watch. What was it? Lights Out the feature! He LOVED it! I was so excited for him. I said, "I hope it's streaming cuz now you got me wanting to rewatch it!" It's on HULU and I'm watching it now. It is really good. I'm happy for you and your success. If I ever get the opportunity to shoot "Mr. Mops" the feature and I could afford you, I'd love to have you by my side to help me learn the feature film process. Peace. -Earl Martin imalittlealien.com

Let's head over her mistakes. 1.Why did she keep toying with the light, 2.She didnt close the door, 3.As if the sheets would help her, 4. She shouldn't have peeked, 5. Honestly though, this short one is a lot better than the movie.
I saw this video when it first came out 8 years ago, and I just saw the movie. This original short still holds up SO well today. This is the pinnacle of horror.
The film itself is not what's terrifying. What's terrifying is that it feeds the paranoia. These are the best types. Gives you chills for days.
9 years later and I am still running to my door with a flashlight
Aghhh, I hate that bare feet running sound in horror film! :D
Also...that face...creepy as hell!
Honestly, I think it might've been a dog
+Claire Sanchez They don't have one

Wer ist wegen creepypastapunch hier?
I found that rather funny than creepy, though...
I don't usually get scared watching movies but this got me good. The build-up, then the sense of safety right before the jumpscare was too good.
I've seen this several times over several years and it's still absolutely one of the best horror films I've seen, period.

Hello fellow Japanese. I too speak the Kanji
Ok
@@rustyshackelford3590 Tell that to Kanji club
The short is better than film.
I agree. I was way more scared those few minutes than the hour and a half or so at the theatre.
Yes, the film was boring, but, David is a great director.
The film was ok, I like the original short film better!!!
I thought so too. This was much scarier.
The feature is great. There are so few memorable horror films released each year, but it's definitely one of them.
The short is based around such a fantastically novel concept. When Blumhouse asked him to expand on the idea for a feature, it would've been so easy to not get it right. It's a small miracle the film works as well as does
It only hit me recently that this was what happened to Esther from the Lights Out movie after she went home.
That's because this is the same director - this short film going viral is what sent him to Hollywood to film Lights Out. He also directed Annabelle: Creation and Shazam!.
Oh. It hadn’t hit me. That’s dark.
And this woman you see is the directors wife... why she has on no pants is beyond me...
@@blackdragon6933 Probably because she's Swedish and it's pretty uncommon for swedes to wear pajama pants or pajamas in general.
this gave me the chills big time. I don't know why anyone wastes there time and money watching teenagers bitch about their relationships with slow dialogue, and tension building when real scary stuff comes from short films. The pacing is just right and when it's finished it has you both freaked out and makes you ask tones of questions
Just saw the trailer, this looks way better tho,Hollywood I swear.😩Short films are better than the full movies.
Yes, but they are free though.
Danielle Brandt the problem is not in the length but in the way horror directors in hollywood like to reinterpret things. They endup copying the copy from the copy of The Exorcist. If they knew half of movie making the director of this short film knows. We wouldn't be talking about this
The feature film and this has the same director lol
@BlobbyTheWanderingFish i didn't, this changes things a bit... i really don't think he's a bad director, i would say however, that the film was a production cashgrab and it wouldn't surprise me that he would've taken the job more as a job than an actual proyect... anyways, thanks for the info
If the lady was Bane: "Aaaah so you think darkness is your ally...."
Lady Bane: "You thought wrong" (picks up bed and breaks it in half on her knee)
Bane: 1, Ghost: 0
I wish.
Avinavi Haha I can fucking see it happening,
Bane: You think darkness is your ally? I was born in it, molded by it, I was already a man until I saw the light of day.
He then proceeds to break her back.
If I turned those lights off, would you die?
Don't worry, you are safe here in the comment section.
It's been years the first time i saw it....still a master piece
Congratulations on getting this made into a full length movie!! you've put a lot of hard work into it and now its paying off.

***** Hammer works, too. Or if you're near the kitchen, it is literally filled with sharp, pointy or blunt, heavy objects to use for self-defense.
Bonus: cast-iron frying pan deals bonus damage against fey.
Firearms are always good to have, too! Even a demon might give pause after being shot once or twice
A perfect way to show how it feels when you know you've seen something but have to convince yourself you didn't so you don't think you're insane
The editing on this is fantastic. Way better than most high budget horror films these days.
Oh come on... you can't compare a short film with a high-end movie. But don't get me wrong, this was indeed a pretty good short movie.
Yes you could. Especially since every horror movie I have seen in the past year sucked dick and was loaded with cliches except for The Conjuring and Sinister.
....and now this is actually a... somewhat high budget full length horror film!
the conjuring is shit...

Go for it. (though mine is a web series)I did, and am very happy I followed through.
This is a thousand times scarier than the full length movie. Brilliant work!
This is what Horror Movies are meant to be! No stupid loud jumpscares, the frightening things are happening inside your head BEFORE things are happening onscreen!

jump scares are fun
What about the jump scare at 0:33?

yeah. It's hard to make a horror movie that makes complete sense.
Li8aGun92 yeah
I mean, I doubt she'd run into the hallway where she saw the ghost but yeah, she realistically wouldn't go right to bed. In real life, a person would probably just stand panicking in their room until they got murdered by the ghost lol.
Horror film logic:
1. I just saw a ghost! Better stay in the house!
2. There's someone coming! Better hide under the blankets!
Akilroth234 if I saw that it'd be enough evidence for me and I'd get the fuck out of there if I could
That's accurate.
FatalX7 These are exactly the rules I lived by as a child. That's why this short movie worked completely for me. Damned. I wished I hadn't seen it.
if i first saw a strange figure, i'd gtfo already not giving a shat about anymore evidence
And *this* is why you keep a weapon next to your bed, children.
And a Snickers. That ghoul at the end needed one. You're not you when you're hungry.
Cute.
+Nina Poizen So you can shoot the ghost?

I watched this at school and finally found the original channel that did this. Thx for not making me sleep for 2 straight hours ☺️
I'm so glad they're making a movie based off of this. The idea is genius, and I'm very happy for the woman who made this video, and who made this idea a reality. I hope you live a very happy life!

Ponysmasher, I’ve watched all your videos, and you are; scare geniuses. The fact that this video of yours was turned into a feature length movie is nothing short of brilliance.
I hope you can make more videos in the future.
I think he stepped back from his youtube channel for a while to make more movies since he's now getting a lot of gig in Hollywood. Would be cool if he made some sort of vlog and post it here for a BTS footage of the movies he made
Going full screen. Wish me luck

Jump scare for me at the very end, and I haven't had one of those in quite a while! Loved this, it was so good! It was so creepy when you could clearly see the outline of someone/something and as soon as she turned the light on, there was nothing there. Such a cool short film, and you did an amazing job with this in only a few minutes. I remember watching the full-length horror movie "Lights Out", but it was a while ago, so I honestly forget what that freaky monster/lady looked like.

That woman: Lights off, "looks at shadow", lights on: "nothing there", rinse and repeat.
Me: Lights off, 'saw shadow", jumps out the second story window and torches house from the outside.
ikr. Then she just goes to bed?
Until you realize you left your mother-in-law in the house and she burns alive landing you in jail for 60 years. That would suck
ESA I will show the jury this video.
The93Enigma Hopefully the camera is in good shape after the fall lol
Tuck and Roll. Was an action movie, jumped out the window slow-motion. Exactly the last second before the house blows up.
I’ve lost the count of how many times
I’ve watched this video. That displays how good it is
I like how she stays in the house after she saw a ghost in her hallway, if i see a roach anywhere in my house i leave and burn the place down

How can she go for sleep after seeing ghost😂
Lol
the bed monster at the end is really the actress who's face was digitally altered to look scary through a video effects editor software program.
Let's head over her mistakes. 1.Why did she keep toying with the light, 2.She didnt close the door, 3.As if the sheets would help her, 4. She shouldn't have peeked, 5. Why did she go to bed after that anyway?, 6. As soon as she saw it the first time, she should have been halfway to texas at this point...
But what if she already was in Texas.
+Ludwig The Holy Blade If she was in Texas, that thing would have been shot with a million bullets the first time she turned that light off and saw it.. End of problem, y'all.
