She was very sick when she sang this. If you watch the clips of Chicago in the recording studio, you see that her voice was not changed at all. She sang live at the Oscars too (9 months pregnant) and sounded phenomenal.
Beautiful performance, and screw anyone who thinks otherwise. Catherine is strong, beautiful woman and considering her with her illness, she did marvelous and still kept on going until the very end. I admire her so much because no matter what she's going through she will do whatever to keep going. I idolize her so much, Catherine is definitely my idol and I look up to her. And this performance was beautiful and the epitome of perfection just like Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Rosangel I hear you, but to have discernment to know when to step away is more professional. With billions of people in the world with stunning voices and talent, thousands could have executed this performance better (it's simple math). I'm sorry but it's not fair to not give superior talent a chance because they get supressed by POLITICS in the performance world. Happens every damn day. Incredible people go by the way side, invisible and in the shadows when THEIR light should be on that stage. If you truly are a professional with your ego in check you would volunteer to step down because it's not about you it's about the viewer. You're supposed to entertain the observer, not provoke controversy because of your personal issues. This was not Catherine. I'm sure she isn't going to be thrilled watching this back.
I read the comments first and was expecting the worst, but I thought it was a beautiful performance! I guess many people don't realise you can act and sing at the same time? This truly was magnificent!
Here's what Stephen Sondheim, the composer/lyricist said in an interview (as given by Wikiwand): I get a lot of letters over the years asking what the title means and what the song's about; I never thought it would be in any way esoteric. I wanted to use theatrical imagery in the song, because she's an actress, but it's not supposed to be a circus [...] [I]t's a theater reference meaning "if the show isn't going well, let's send in the clowns"; in other words, "let's do the jokes." I always want to know, when I'm writing a song, what the end is going to be, so "Send in the Clowns" didn't settle in until I got the notion, "Don't bother, they're here", which means that "We are the fools.
Even though vocally she struggled that night, this performance is still spell-binding. I believe her acting in this is so phenomenal, I can't take my eyes off of her.
Difficult to sing while you cry, more difficult to emote in Radio City, and the most difficult part for Catherine had to be singing when she was sick. Add to the mix she showed up to be a part of the Broadway experience not expecting to win, and to pay respect to the pros like Sondheim that invited her. I loved Catherine's Desiree, great chemistry with entire cast! The ALNM CD is perfection and so was Catherine, kudos and welcome to Broadway Catherine!
Her version of this song is themed to her role to be a women who reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. So, i think she gave justice to the song, well its only my opion. =)
To people giving her flack, have you ever tried sitting absolutely still and singing to a theatre jam packed with over 3000 people? You need some kind of movement. Sondheim's music is about the words as much as the music, lyrics are important, emotions help. She did extremely well.
Watch Bernadette peters sing "time heals everything" while standing perfectly still...watch dame Judy Dench's version of this song to see how minimal movement and not being a singer adds so much...sometimes sitting/standing perfectly still completely sells a song...so what if she's in a theatre with 3000 people..so what if she's sick....IT'S HER JOB...i know CZJ was dealing with bipolar and was in mania mode, so they should have pre-filmed her at her theatre since she was so ill, bc this performance was terrible.
Why so much dislike? I see nothing that is wrong with this provision. she is amazing as usual. A fantastic actress, a talented dancer and an amazing singer. The best!
all music is interpreted. all versions are different because artists and directors interpret them differently. it isn't a bad thing--it's a wonderful thing.
The frantic head motion is a bit unsettling and unnatural seeming...however, while many people are blaming nerves or bipolar disorder (what?), I feel like the much more likely and understandable explanation is that she's used to singing this with a scene partner. In the context of the play, the character is trying to process very difficult emotions with the person she loves, and has been turned down by, present. Zeta-Jones had been doing this song, directing the emotion and energy through a partner, eight times a week...and then, for the televised event, they took away her scene partner. I don't think her erratic head motion was a sign of bad acting in the role in general, it was having no where to direct that emotion in this unique performance.
Taylor Nelson Nice sentiment, but - no. Incredibly, undoubtedly, no. Heartbreaking to watch, I understand but it is exemplary of how serious a disorder can be. It's not anecdotal, trivial, debatable. It's ragingly clear she has a condition here.
Exactly!!! Why did they not start the scene with her scene partner like this song has always been done in the past? It was the shortest performance of the night and it was so weird to have her there singing this song without and context.
She didn't move her head like that when she had a scene partner in the full production, which took place in a much smaller house. She's West End trained, she knows performers need to adjust a performance to fit a house. In this case, I think not having a scene partner left her caught between singing out to the big house and keeping the intimacy of the moment...and that conflict is all we end up seeing.
ok. so this song was never written to be " SUNG " however, Catherines performance proves that it can be and with as much affect. I was lucky enough to see her on Broadway and she truly was amazing, not to everyones taste but that is life. personally i thought she was AMAZING.
I think this performance is good, it's very overreacted but if you see her acceptance speech this night it's obvious she was in the mania stage of the bipolar disorder she was suffering with at that time. Would people this apart if she was singing in a wheelchair or with cancer. It's a similar thing, she's performing and giving it her all when she's battling a terrible illness. People should be more considerate.
Fun fact, Angela Lansbury was supposed to perform liaisons instead but got super ill so Catherine last minute had to step in and sing without rehearsal. She had no idea where the cameras were, that’s why she’s abruptly moving her head around she’s trying to find them
I can understand the singing because of her not feeling up to par. However her whiplash movements aren't an excused symptom of her being sick. This makes for great comedy! XD
This is amazing but she is usually even better. She was very sick during this performance, she could barely talk that night. But omg she’s the best. Imagine singing like this even if you’re sick
I liked her performance. I'll give her some credit for doing it really sick (if I recall correctly, she was ill the night of the Tonys) which caused her to strain her voice on some of the higher notes, but actually I think some of these strained notes actually added to the performance. For example, when she fumbles on the word "my" at 2:22; I think it fits perfectly. We all know what this song is about (a woman losing her career and finally realizing it) so it's supposed to be overdramatic
Jane Austenfan Good point. I noticed that in a couple of her performances in Chicago. I loved her before she married into the Douglas family. Her "pre-anger" years.
Neither of you has got this correct. It's meant to have a bit of anger, possibly in the form of scathing tones and looks.. It's also a song meant for a much older person, such as Judy Dench who does a version on here. Someone called Judy's version "definitive". Who knows ? Judy has used the same accent her whole acting life no matter the part. . Catherine hasn't. She can do accents. They all do different versions, but usually not when they're I'll..
Personally, I think the acting is superb. She isn't just shaking her head wildly with no rhyme or reason, she's looking for the DAMN clowns! "Wait! Was that a clown?" *look left* "Nope, just the conductor. Is that one over there?" *look right* "No, just one of the many other actresses who should have won this Tony...." *look, left, then right, then left again* "Where are the effing clowns??" *double take*
Considering she was sick that night, and she performed anyway -- quite good. And since she is singing "in character," many who criticize her apparently don't understand Broadway or the meaning of the Tony Awards. I think CZJ is quite a talent. Few in Hollywood can match her versatility when you include her ability to act, sing, and dance.
She's acting it, she's not feeling it at all. It's like she wants to show us how to feel it. This is such a beautiful song. Shame really. Dame Judi Dench en Glenn Close really feel this song. You ought to listen to their version. Pure magic!
I think this is probably the best performance of this song I have ever seen take a look at all the ones on RUclips actress needs to sing the song my cousins who are actors and actresses wanted tnis sung at their funerals
There's a big difference between having large, dramatic movements to translate well on-stage... and moving your head this way and that like a pigeon while phrasing lines like Shatner singing Rocketman. A really amazing stage actor/actress can command the stage without all that-- look at Judi Dench singing it-- or Ruthie Henshall. This a slow, sad, quiet song of denial in heartbreak--Miz' Jones needs to internalize. I dunno how she won the Tony, but... everyone, please watch Dench's version.
@LucidDreeaaming There is a difference between dramatic and over-dramatic. Broadway does not mean over-acting. The reason she gets cast in things is because she can act while she sings, and clearly evade she can sing. Tbh, I take the opinions of Broadway and West End acting agents higher than a few haters comments on a RUclips video.
Everyone who is bashing her performance...first of all, can YOU sing? Second, being sick and losing your voice is actually a REALLY good reason to not sound fantastic. Normally if you're that sick, you can't talk, let alone sing. Third, she wasn't trained as a movie actress, she was trained as a live theatre actress. (First show was the lead in 42 Street.) She can also dance quite well.
Comparison is unavoidable, but it's your expectations that let you guys down. I don't know a thing about 'A Little Night Music' other than this song and 'Everyday a Little Death" but seeing this performance made me want to know more about the show, the character, and I felt instantly sorry I didn't get to see this live. She played this like "Old Hollywood" without making it look like a caricature. Brilliantly done.
Coming out like Catherine I suffer from bipolar disorder. I have a light disorder but still I know exactly what it feels like and we know how hard it can be for entourage to comprehend and it takes some time to feel at peace with the world...
@mmllkk2009 That is correct, Daniel was overlooked for Equus that year and for HTSIBWRT in 2011, which is hard to believe since he was so good in both. However, if you look at who won in 2010, a Tony was awarded to a bona fide movie star in five of the eight acting categories (Scarlet Johansson, Eddie Redmayne, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, and CZJ).
@browneyesbigsmile I agree with everything you said about there being a difference between dramatic and over-dramatic and how broadway doesnt mean over-acting, but Broadway is always dramatic even in what appears to be a "subtle" performance..being dramatic doesnt necessarily have to mean excessive movement or facial expressions in a performance but rather be used to describe the stricking, overwhelming emotional connection that one feels from witnessing an awing performance..kinda get me?
I saw her on Broadway. She was FANTASTIC! This video doesn't do her justice. She was sick that night.

She sang great here and performed whilst suffering with bipolar disorder, so give her some respect.
Mikey Cunningham Well when you pay $100+ to see someone on Broadway they should probably be capable of giving a consistent performance.
Bipolar disorder doesn’t affect your voice
Fantastic. I loved this interpretation. The anger. Great work
