@@Nangis123 Actually Corelli was quite gifted musically in some ways. There's more than one way to be a bad musician or a good one. Corelli learned complete roles by himself at his home piano in just a few days. Even Domingo couldn't do that, although Domingo was more careful when he had learned all the notes. Pavarotti of course was a terrible music learner. Pavarotti also took a number of performances to really get the music "in the voice". When he finally was comfortable he was quite musical, but if he hadn't had that magic tone he would have found it almost impossible to get work in a major house. He drove the others nuts with his inability to learn new music. Corelli didn't need a repetiteur.
@@Agorante Your definition of musicality seems to be centered around the ability to learn new music in record time .This is like saying anyone who learns his lines fast is a good actor .No doubt learning fast and a good memory are assets but they don't not make a good actor .You can have good memory and know all your lines to perfection but totally miss the point when delivering them on stage .Or you may have the wrong accent or bad diction .Or .Or.Or . @@Nangis123 You have come back at me with a vigorous refutation of my position. Except that wasn't my position at all. I said Corelli was very good at learning new music. That's relevant because Pavarotti was so bad. And I had the same flaw. It took me forever to learn new music. I knew from the first I could never sing in one of the big pro opera houses. No big house would put up with my inability to quickly pick up new music. I was always going to be limited to smaller houses. Pavarotti was much the same but his voice was special and they would put up with him. I wrote that Corelli was sloppy musically. And I'll stand by that.

One of the best tenors in history! No one has ever come close to him! No parallel! And he mostly taught himself, with a little bit of coaching from Lauri- Volpi.
Actually, having seen him in person and at his absolute peak (1965 - 1967), I did feel there was no one better at the time. As for anyone who was an equal at that time, there was one other whom I saw who was an equal, I felt, but in his own special way with his own special gifts. He did not have as innately beautiful a tone in the traditional sense, although I heard a heartbreaking humanity in it. He did not have the spectacular top of a Corelli (no one else that decade did). But in his way, he could translate the vocal line into pure emotion just as tellingly. He also had an astounding suppleness in bel canto agility slightly superior to Corelli's, together with a stronger versatility in languages. Nothing in all this made him superior to Corelli, but having also seen him as well as Corelli, I felt his accomplishments made him a complement to Corelli: it was Jon Vickers, the other leading heroic tenor of his day. Vickers' virtues were uncommonly wide-ranging and rarely combined in one and the same artist. But there is one other tenor, not a dramatic but a relatively weighty lyric, who does combine many of Vickers' qualities together with even more profound musicality and a more traditionally beautiful tone, as well as great charm: Richard Tauber, who is, in many ways, my favorite tenor of all. I only wish I'd been born early enough to see him for real. I have to be satisfied with recordings and videos instead. Even Tauber merely complements Corelli, as Vickers does. Tauber doesn't give me the same vibrant top heard in Corelli, nor quite the same lush tones throughout the range. What Tauber does provide is a rich emotional identification with every piece he sings, as does Corelli, together with Tauber's own startling stylistic versatility. Wouldn't it be amazing if a tenor could combine the features of Corelli and Tauber together?! The versatile stylistic acuity of Tauber alongside the heroic vocal charisma and sheer dramatic/physical presence of Corelli! The brilliant top of Corelli alongside the impeccable bel canto agility of Tauber! Well, I find there is such a tenor, but one has to reach back to the dawn of recording to find him. At the start of the twentieth century, we have only a dozen or so recordings from him, all very primitive, of a tenor who combines many of these attributes, with the exception of linguistic versatility. He sang in his own language only and hardly ever traveled, even despite one very prestigious invitation abroad (Bayreuth), which he turned down. It is Ivan Yershov. So for me, Yershov, Tauber, Vickers and Corelli are the tenors I listen to the most of all. They each provide something special I don't find in others, and I'm grateful each of their legacies provides something precious for future generations to aspire to.
This comes I believe from the complete second NORMA STUDIO recording. Like many tenors in this role Corelli would hardly (if ever?) take this aria’s written high C in a LIVE performance. The piece comes early in the opera so, probably, he & some others felt it too soon to take the chance. I still rate Corelli in a class all his own for his type of tenor voice & his notorious nervousness may also have been a factor in omitting the C in LIVE performance. Nevertheless this NORMA is among his greatest complete studio recordings.
The vocal standard against which every succeeding generation must measure themselves. Simply the most heroic, most intelligent, most musical tenor voice ever heard. He left us a precious legacy: let us live up to it!
The perfect Pollione. When it came time to record Norma in 1960, Callas insisted that they wait until Corelli was available. Callas, being great herself, knew greatness when she saw it in another artist.
Callas, Corelli and an unexpected Christa Ludwig were a superb love triangle for Bellini.

What a peformance!!!
One of the best tenors in history! No one has ever come close to him! No parallel! And he mostly taught himself, with a little bit of coaching from Lauri- Volpi.

Not 1 Of The Best, He Was The Best No One Even Close.

The voice and INTERPRETATION!
Breathtaking indeed, gives a perspective on today’s tenors to measure..
Stunning mastery from Il Maestro. Thank you so much.
