      It’s a VLOG. Read the title of the video. I happened to be putting up a new TV aerial while chatting to the viewers who enjoy my vlogs.

    I was in the loft recently, fitting a new high gain tv aerial and new signal amplifier. This increased the signal strength considerably. But I made an interesting discovery - by leaving the old aerial right next to the new one, pointing in the same direction, but NOT CONNECTED to the new one in any way, the signal strength is increased considerbly more. It seems that the old aerial picks up some signal, amplifies it, and retransmits it in such a way that the new aerial picks up the signal coming through the air from the old aerial. I've removed the coax cable from the old aerial, as it isn't required. None of the websites I've visited regarding combining tv aerial signals mention this trick!

    Do aerials need to be grounded from lighting strikes ?

    • @christopherhulse8385
      @christopherhulse8385 3 года назад +2

      Grounding the pole the aerial is attached to is a good idea, especially if you live in an area that has frequent storms.

    Why do you put the antennas in the loft? We have them outside up on the roof.

    • @Justin52wales
      @Justin52wales 4 года назад +1

      Because on U.K. houses it’s difficult to get on the roofs to the chimney if the house has one so it’s far easier to install in the attic

    • @Justin52wales
      @Justin52wales 4 года назад +2

      @Louis Williams £120 for a company to put one up and don’t need meter to check you just follow the other houses in the street so easy todo in the attic and with a booster there is no difference that on the roof and I know because iv done both in the past and would never risk climbing on a roof when I can save myself a lot of money and time and fit in the attic

    • @boblewis5558
      @boblewis5558 3 года назад +1

      Attic fitting can work just fine ... IF
      1. Signal strength is generally high enough (few if any obstructions to transmitter).
      Receiving a signal through a roof can reduce strength by anything from 3dB (50% reduction) to over 8dB (84% reduction), especially with the difference in roofing materials, tile, slate, METAL(!!), and also, of course, if Kingspan insulation type (aluminium coated foam) is present.
      2. Angle to transmitter is not close to angle of a roof corner/brick gable end (this significantly increases loss c.f. straight through the roof.
      3. NO Solar PV panels on the roof! These act in the same way as a Faraday cage!!
      4. You use a distribution amp to achieve multi-room connections
      If ANY or ALL the above are NOT true you will likely suffer loss, probably large. Remember, digital transmission, just like digital audio, is either fine or rubbish and unlike analogue there is little to zero warning ... Signal is either sufficient or NOTHING!
      Bottom line is wherever possible mount the antenna:
      1. Outside
      2. As high as possible/legally allowed
      3. To cater for earth curvature - typically pointing slightly downward in the direction of the transmitter, but maximum AT the direction of the horizon.
      I've seen "professional" installers spend too much time aligning for "horizontal" and after the direction is set, never readjust horizontal alignment, which in fact can gain or lose +1 or +2dB!
      If in doubt ... Mount it out!

    Hit a strange issue at my mum's, she's never had HD channels but Freeview website says otherwise, I tried Auto tune, nothing HD wise,so my question is do you think it's my mother's roof antenna and not being powerful enough? Or is it a case of the Freeview HD channels not available in area? Thanks in advance

    • @RogersBitsDoings
      @RogersBitsDoings  2 года назад

      If you haven’t got a signal booster I would suggest fitting one as that can improve the number of channels you receive.

    • @L1RW
      @L1RW Год назад

      Maybe you need a HD tuner. Everyone can get the main channels in HD.
