You are so right that simple is not always easy. A lot of people overlook that living simple requires a lot of work, being willing to try things, and as you said accepting failure. But, on the other side of those failures is what you learn along the way. It helps to shorten the learning curve for other things that may be related. I was glad to see that The Wizard has now created himself a proper workshop.(smile) You too can now focus on your art work (which is amazing) now that a lot of the homestead setup is done. Wishing you three great happiness in the new year!!
Haha yes, the wizard is happy finally having a space to himself and all his favourite toys ;) Now he doesn't has to share it anymore with my gazzillion garden supplies :p Thank you Cherrie, and I wish you a great start of the new year too
merci beaucoup pour votre authenticité réelle, et votre simplicité joyeuse! vous êtes des pionniers, d'une vie qui elle seule va devenir "possible"! loin du stress, des machines, du virtuel, et du mensonge! bravo! merci encore de partager!
Dearest Laura, another cracka of a video!! Thankyou for always being so genuine and giving of yourself and your life on your beautiful, remarkable and blessed homestead. I know from small experiences how tenacious one must be to achieve all that you have thus far! I can well appreciate how incredibly hard both you and Jonas have worked to build (and continue to build) the life you have carved out for yourselves and your gorgeous little girl. What amazing parents you are! I only wish I lived nearer to you so that I could help give you some much needed time to have a small break away…..but Australia is a bloody long way away! The peace and happiness you find in your heart when you are in nature resonates so deeply with me, I feel we are connected in some small way because of this. Thankyou once again for your kind and gentle observances of life and for sharing them here on your channel. I look forward to receiving your newsletter and as always, I wish you much love and abundance. May 2025 ensure that you and your beautiful family continue to flourish and learn through all the constant and precious work you do to make this world a better place. Have a fabulous day, Alli ❤xxx
Thank you so much for this thoughtfull and kind comment. Such wonderfull people in the world. Thank you Alli, warmly appreciated, and have a blessed start of 2025!
One of my favorite parts of your home is the incorporation of water just outside your front door. That zone zero water feature was one of the best things you did on your property thus far. I appreciate you showing the water storage area for showering, etc, and talking about how that works. It's another little glimpse into the slow living adventure that keeps me coming back to your channel for every.single.minute of content.
The beauty and peacefulness and connection to nature certainly come through your videos! These are things most people have lost. Kudos to you for building them so well. The hard work comes through, too! Gotta be very satisfying!
Your little girl is adorable! How the time goes so quickly💖 I watch a lot of homestead channels and can see it takes every day. I did this many many years ago fur two years, but gave it up because it was my dream and my Then- husband wasn’t interested, so it failed. I agree the quietness, birds singing , your garden knowing you are eating good food, etc. All is Beautiful~~
Hi, I have been watching your great videos from the start on your land. You have achieved so much with hard work. I love your wood cut blocks and recently purchased the cherry pickers. I can hardly wait until it arrives. We live in the Okanagan valley in B. C. Canada where a lot of cherries and soft fruit grows. We live on a 1 acre property. When we bought it 33 years ago there was nothing here. We built a conventional house as the by laws wouldn't change. But 3 years ago we had solar panels installed but we're tied to the grid. We got chickens 8 years ago for eggs. We have raised some for meat as well. We have lots of garden and we try to grow as much as possible. I make sour dough bread and yogurt and as much as I can from scratch. Your garden is beautiful and the pond looks so tranquil. Something I always wanted. Take care.
Ahw thank you for your thoughtful comment! Thanks so much for your support!! Love that you're area has a lot of cherry trees. Seems like you have dabbled and experimented with a lot of things on your plot of land! Thank you for being here 🙏
Hey, you got a nice place on earth and a a life that makes sense. There's nothing as a a free day... 🙂 i can relate to that for sure.... Thanks for sharing!
I am 80, single woman farmer in the desert. I try not to use the word “simple”, it’s misleading. I have been living this way all my life. It is never simple, it’s 24/7. It is NEVER easy. I cannot imagine city people with no experience, trying to live this way. The learning curve is nigh impossible to overcome. Even now, I learn new things every day. Life consists of endlessly tearing down something we have created and upgrading. This is especially so if you have a working relationship with Nature on your property. Nature is continually teaching us better ways to work with her. I don’t call anything a “failure”……it’s a lack of understanding, a lack of connecting the dots, is all it is. It’s merely a step to bigger understanding. A better connection with Nature. Sometimes we misunderstand what the directions were. As we develop a better understanding, there does come times when we connect Perfectly, and we see A to Z in an instantaneous flash. It’s like a software program suddenly downloaded into our consciousness. The biggest obstacle is overcoming the urge to let our mind control the narrative. I rarely leave the property. This is my self made world….not always one of perfection, but it is my world and no one else’s. So if there is less than Perfection it is up to me to create more Perfection. There is an old saying “everywhere you go, you are still there”. It means Contentment and Understanding, is only found within….not without. The yearning we may experience to take a rest, to go “traveling”…..is a “within” problem. You may experience problems with your metal root cellar. It may create a lot of condensation and rot your produce. I recommend “newbies” spend time searching for videos that show how we Asians have lived rurally for five thousand years. It will impart a huge understanding of how to work hand in hand with Nature. I would also suggest researching JADAM methods of growing food. It is also called Korean Natural Farming. ❤
The life you have created just seems so magical, yet I can certainly see that it takes a lot of hard work. Now, you will find a way to have some days off to rejuvenate, as I feel that is so important. Eliana is adorable and growing so fast. As a mother, grandmother and great grandmother I can honestly say life is whirlwind. ❤ Happiest of New Years to You! 🥳
I would love to receive your newsletter - I so enjoy your videos. You've created a wonderful family and home life and your hard work is visible and appreciated. Thanks.
Hi there! Thats lovely! You can sign up by following the website link on the homepage of this channel, or via the description in this video. Just scroll down and leave your email adress in the box! Thanks so much for following along
Thanks for sharing your experience… that inspired myself…. I am 65 lives with my two dogs and two cats……for the last year I was bullied my straw bale house in the mountains in Colombia….for problems during the building, the burgers was not in off. Now I ready to move at the not finished house, I little afraid but with full of motivation. Buy the way I am a ceramics!
Thank you for sharing your way of life with all of us. I have lived in cities internationally for 11 years and have dreamed of reconnecting with Nature since 2021. Last year, I bought one of your prints to symbolize a simple life in connection with Nature. It's now the first thing we see when we enter our sweet home in the beautiful, quiet forest. The Oak Cottage vision is now a reality. Gratitude and blessings!
Wishing you health, peace & prosperity in your land of slow living for the new year. Thank you for grand videos as we glimpse your serene, hard working lives
Oh! I love the workshop! Well, everything you do I love. Homesteading is not easy but like you say, managing the time is the greatest perks of this lifestyle and quality/taste of the food, being surrounded by beautiful landscape/nature/architecture, to your taste and taking the time to do, to do well, to enjoy … but don’t count the hours :) ahaha!
Really love this way of living, your location, home and beautiful family. We are in the process of setting up something similar down in Kent, UK. What we feel might make a simple life easier, is to not farm animals. That will take a lot of the work away and is not a necessary thing to do. All the best you all and happy new year!
A grand way to end the year! I too would like to be more self sufficient. It is a lot of work but the rewards are fabulous. Your little family is beautiful. All the best in 2025!
Thank you for sharing. Wishing you much happiness and accomplishments this next year. The workshop space must be so helpful. You have accomplished so much and I so enjoy seeing the things you both do.
Hallo Laura en Jonas. Ik vind dat jullie veel talent hebben en ik begrijp dat het homesteaden iets te romantisch lijkt als je in de matrix leeft zoals de meesten van ons.❤
The little girl is just great!...I've been following your progress since the very beginning, your channel is one of the nicest I've come across on RUclips...we also recently moved to the countryside, from Ireland to Latvia, and we've been here for 4 years now, I created a youtube channel, Latgalian Robinsons, to tell how we are doing...
You showed the furs in this video. I noticed you haven't mentioned slaughtering any of the livestock you keep besides that male goat who got too wild. I figured you were increasing the number of bunnies and goats for a reason. Do you keep them for meat and fur as well?
Why did you choose to go for "off-grid" on energy? Is it necessity or a world view thing? Did you ask from power company for a price of creating connection to your house and it was (way) over the price of solar panels? In Estonia, they can ask anything from few thousand to yes, sometimes tens of thousands for building that connection. But if power lines are close, then it should be the lower end. That would solve a lot of issues. In the countryside, you still need generator or two for blackouts, that do happen. But still, vast majority of time, network energy works even in the countryside.
Yes it's true, we mostly liked the challenge of setting up our own energy system, and see if we could come up with 'off grid' and simple solutions to our energy needs. We did ask for a quote out of curiosity recently and were quite suprised by the amount they asked for though!
@@isabellavalencia8026actually, that is a severely limiting concept. If it doesn’t cost much, it’s better to have connected electrical service AND alternative methods. I am 80, I have been living this way all my life. I have electric, which is cheap, but absolutely everything is also Solar ready at a turn of the switch. Living “off grid” has been coined by people who do not understand how to utilize any method you can, to create a more prosperous life. I call it a “I am from the city, does it show” mindset. Strictly adhering to abolishing all useful “outside” tools, is, quite frankly, ill conceived as to how much work this lifestyle demands. I would say 99% of people having failed to live a more self sustainable way of life is created by a fantasy attitude, not a “this is real life” mindset. Embracing this totally unrealistic attitude is what causes burnout and depression which leads to an overwhelming sense of failure, and they leave the land….having not understood the simplest of basics. This is not 1850.
Beautiful - a beautiful dream: & for most people in the UK, a ‘dream’ is all it can ever be…even a small ‘conveyor-belt’ dwelling with a ‘pocket handkerchief’ garden is beyond their means: Next best is an allotment - if you can get past the wannabe trendies above you on the waiting lists I wish this young, strong, healthy (& wealthy) couple all the best… Don’t you need motor vehicles for this - or would a pony & trap be sufficient? Unconvinced 🙄
Well, we get the last laugh. I have yet to see many non Asians, non Hispanics, non Africans etc….understand the concepts of this lifestyle. They continue to eat meat, which in itself is a huge energy output work wise, they build large cabins with high ceilings, they still use firewood and wood stoves, instead of rocket stoves utilizing biomass from your own property for fuel. They don’t ferment or pickle foods which is an energy saving activity. How many have ever heard of ONDAL heating of houses, or JADAM/Korean Natural farming which is easy, not time consuming and utilizes biomass on your property to create all fertilizers and pesticides. It’s no wonder, few succeed.
