    as a writer, I am not jealous of Alex Aster. I think this is partially because of the stage of my writing I'm in? I haven't published any long pieces yet, and I'm editing a novel I've been working on for several years, but am not looking for a publisher yet because it's nowhere near ready. If I had been looking for a publisher for a long time, or struggling to sell books for a long time, I would desperately want to be in Alex's shoes, but right now I'm really scared of not getting an editor who gives me good advice and teaches me how to improve my story without murdering all my darlings. And I'm really scared of getting cornered into making a book that isn't the best I can make it. And I don't think Alex had adequate time or adequate good feedback to make her book the best it could be and that sounds like a terrible position to be in
    I'm... kind of scared of being there?

  • @kandibug5303
    @kandibug5303 Год назад +4

    Here are my running disorganized thoughts as I watch the read along:
    Nothing wrong with Bad Book Bingo as long we're being cheeky about it and learn some important lessons along the way. And sometimes books be bad but lets all remember there are very many flavors and degrees of trash that conissuers can discern and "appreciate."
    I feel this book was rushed out to be sold as I doubt Aster was working on this book for a decade straight, but rather working on and off it in pieces over the years while working on other projects.
    The rushed publishing process might have hurt Aster in terms of plotting and story structure. Though it seems Aster had some grammer and formatting edits which is better than The Night & Its Moon.
    It's strange to see the book space go through what video games suffered with overhyped marketing and very underwhelming (or failed promised) delivery.
    Aster may have avoided some of the disappointment and backlash if she had been more transparent about the her economic status and the process of edits/publishing. Also maybe not advertise based on just tropes or a checklist of popular character interactions. This is what I like to call advertising stuff based on ingredients rather what the recipe or actual end product is
    I will give Aster a little bit of leeway (like 15%) here and also ask potential book buyers to take all advertising (especially overhyped stuff that promises everything you can think of) with some caution. Do not fall prey to easy buzzwords without thinking on how an end product will achieve these promises. Being in the video game space has taught me and many others that lesson.
    Also she gave away the love triangle winner in the promised tropes list by saying the bad boy/villian will get the girl when the hypothecial appeal of a love triangle is the dynamics and the development for the characters with the whole who will they choose?
    The first chapter was not so bad and if the book keeps this minimun quality then we can call it a very medicore book with terrible marketing tricks to get people on board.

      That sucks for Aster and Lightlark. I will also take this as another cautionary lesson and reminder (like with The Night & Its Moon) to be careful in not rushing into publishing a rough draft version of a passion project the first opportunity you get without proper story structure revisions, grammer edits, practice, and formatting.

      As far as I'm concerned it's just one of those genre things. like bank heists, prison breaks, or zombies that you can't really go wrong with, dramatically - in theory. I also think in an anthropological sense, it's hard for the culture to shake off resonant symbols. We live in a time of gross inequality, gladitorial combat is a convenient and accessible metaphor for a number of social anxieties that have unfortunately become fairly universal. Especially the callous hedonism of the elite, and the frank disposibility of the general populace.
