    As a girl with a native heritage, I think the sandstone palette was blown way out of proportion by people who had no reason to speak on the matter anyways and just did so to look like they was doing something right on social media. I'm not saying how anyone should or shouldn't have felt but, seemed like most the people speaking on it had no reason to be offended to begin with and just jumped on the bandwagon. I think the artwork is stunning and caught my attention with all native artwork that reminded me of how my grandma had her house decorated to show off our family heritage and family roots. Though the color story left much to be desired for sure! 🤷‍♀️💙

      Same, as a someone born in SoCal and am indigenous descent of the region I wasn’t offended by the palette. I personally think if the people on the team were also indigenous descent working on that it’s not offensive.

    • @susiedbc
      @susiedbc 3 года назад +33

      Thanks for sharing this. I’m not of Native American descent, but was wondering whether those who are felt it was disrespectful and/or offensive. In thinking about my own culture, where something analogous was used, I felt good, like my culture was accepted in the mainstream in a positive way. While certainly, some other uses would be offensive to me. The idea of the sandstone palette kind of reminds me of the Chinese New Year palettes, which did not receive similar criticism. As with any group, I’m sure people from the NA culture have differing opinions, but most (all?) of the criticism I saw was from white people.

    They could've seriously included more of the Sailormoon anime aspect than JUST Sailor Moon (Usagi)'s color scheme of pinks and yellows :( I mean the rest of the main Sailor girls have such diverse colour schemes and they could've gone for a rich jewel tone for each girl! Like add a bright or icy shimmer blue for Mercury, a deep emerald green for Jupiter, true primary red or a rusty lava red shimmer for Mars, and an orangey pink duochrome shimmer for Venus; then Sailor Moon can have her golden yellow shimmer and bubblegum pink and even a true primary blue since it's part of her Sailor "costume"! that was really disappointing since I was kinda expecting nostalgia to hit when I would look at the pan but nah, it was just boring :(

      Accuracy. In 2022 I'm looking at mega palettes. But with a lot on sale I'm also looking at unique color schemes and I did a spreadsheet of overlapping shades. The megas are a lot of the same peaches with a random/unique blue, purple or green... the jewel tones I want. Even Play it Jewel is actually shy on jewel tones and just a bit brighter version of Mood. Literally.
      And yes, I've looked at those quads. It's good color, but definitely an up cost and more pieces from the megas. Then the rainbows are bright. If I could have a dark version of Hue... Yes!
      But I've noticed a lot of rebranding where they swap a unique color for one like champagne that's in everything with a different name (beautiful color... But a mega has 4 of them).

  • @greeniejoey
    @greeniejoey 3 года назад +124

    I'm Native American and from the southwest. I hate the issues surrounding the sandstone palette because looking at it myself there is no cultural appropriation. Pueblo is Spanish for village. The names itself are generic. And the designs on front is a plain geometric pattern. People need to look at companies like Pendleton who have been using Native American imagery for years if not decades to sell their ugly "southwest decor." Cultural appropriation is what Ann Mendez of Ann Beauty cosmetics who said she is Chickasaw and made a "dreamcatcher" palette that included shades like "Trail of Tears" (blue shade) and "1830s" (grey shade). This sandstone palette for me is tame. It could have gone in a completely different direction but it's refreshing to see something generic that touches upon the scenery of the southwest rather than the people or the culture.

    I love the Hocus Pocus palette too and I think the color story fits perfectly with the movie. All the people who are complaining are probably people who just enjoy complaining about everything. That, or they are still bitter that it sold out before they got one. Lol

    Literally bought all 3 of the dark bloom palettes on discount at ulta for the packaging. I LOVE that colourpop does everything magnetic so Ive filled these with shades from so jaded and Im obsessed! Its so easy too, just a paper towel and a fridge magnet, no damage. Its why I hate when colourpop does square pans.

    I am a huge Moonie, and I loved my Sailor Moon palette for that. The colors were kind of hard to work with, and the staying power for me was not the greatest. That said, I left it in my car earlier this year, and my car was stolen from our garage, and the palette is no longer in my possession, and that made me really sad. I haven't repurchased, because I'm trying to be more mindful of purchases this coming year, but I am sad not to have it anymore. :(

    So I created a Frankenstein palette with my Sailor Moon palette 😂 I took shades from good sport (I know that’s blasphemous) and combined it with some of the shades that I liked in the aura and out and in a trance palette and then kept the neutrals already in the Sailor Moon palette and I actually really like the little color story it created!

    I really enjoyed this video! I didn’t expect to agree with you as our coloring is very different and I’m 65. But I must say that one of my expectations of a palatte, is to have at least one highlight color. I am loving CPs price point and many options.

    Half-sleeve??? How have I never noticed that you have a tattoo? Now I'm so curious to see it! Loved this ranking video, I really appreciate that you take into account the everyday usability of each palette. I feel like I sometimes get caught up in the novelty of color stories and hype around palettes, so it's nice to be reminded of how much I would potentially use a palette on a day-to-day basis. Can't wait to see what you do in 2021!

It might take some experimenting but I will find a go to look for this one. I am quite fair so I know that it will work, it's just a matter of pairing the right colors together. Nice video!

    Having lived in Japan as a kid and growing up where cartoons like Sailor Moon was a childhood staple, I guess it was a bit nostalgic for me, and now that I have a daughter (growing up in Texas, so very different culture) of my own who is at the age to be interested in makeup, I just had to get it. I actually still have a coloring book from when I was a little girl in Japan where I had colored in the pictures very badly.

    When I first saw Blush Crush, I thought it was cute and got it. The longer it sat by the mirror, the less excited I was. Once I actually started using it, I loved the different pink-y looks I came up with! Definitely a great basic palette. I love the look of Baroque, when blue eyeshadows are made, they're almost always jewel-toned or light blues, I definitely want to see more grey, cool and periwinkle blues!

  • @micky2594

    This video was so helpful to me even though we don't have the same opinions entirely. It is actually really helpful when picking palettes or figuring out which is spot on or not to see someone who can pick up a palette and admit like Well this isn't my favorite, the quality is really on par but the colour theory isn't. That is crazy helpful as opposed to setting down the pastel palettes that weren't very strong then claiming everything else as a palette. Once you have a collection of makeup and you know exactly what tones you like, you don't need to repeat everything else a million times. I, for example, love taupes and cooler neutrals because they flatter me. I have one small warm neutral palette I really enjoy and I don't need a ton of other warm neutrals until there is something crazy special in it that I am missing. Not all of us are going to buy all 30-some palettes a year and that is just from ONE brand. Knowing what they do best vs what they could work on is a great thing for someone to mention objectively. As for the sailor moon thing, I love SM, it's nostalgic to me from when I was a child, but at the end of the day it is makeup, and if the makeup isn't up to par or your thing oh well. I am sure there are some people who would be willing to buy it for the nostalgic display purpose, but nobody should get on anybody else if they don't do the same.

    I LOVED the Gather Round Sisters palette better than I think almost ANY colorpop palette I have! and I have quite a few but the COLORS! They are FINALLY the grimy, kind of gunge colors I loved on my eyes. They are subdued yet rich with a touch of a sootiness to them. The burgundy and purple colors made my eyes POP GREEN, the others really made my eyes look deeper, brighter and really stand out! I bought 2 because I did not want to run out and I wanted to make sure when it isn't made anymore that I could DUPE the colors and mix myself copies. I used to custom blend customer's favorite or discontinued colors of every thing from lips, cheeks, shadows, etc at Nordstrom years ago, when they had a line that used to do that. I made my own "chanel" quads, LOL. for myself! But THESE are the colors I have been waiting for ! All these great smoldered down shades. They are REALLY beautiful on whether you go light or deep with them, they are so rich & pretty!!

    You are one of my favorite Colourpop reviewers. You just go into so much detail and are always so enjoyable to watch. I bought Nude Mood, Blush Crush and the purple Solstice palettes. I also did a smaller BYOP. Very happy with all my purchases this year. I love Colourpop but instead of them cranking out new palettes every 5 minutes, I’d love to see them doing more restocks. Also I’m with you on pressed glitters. I have significant eye issues and the glitters aren’t worth the risk for me. And the square pans make me irrationally angry. 🤷‍♀️😂Merry Christmas and a Safe & Happy New Year. ❤️
