Nice and interesting video it gave me an extensive picture of what the trip between Athens and Thessaloniki looks like. I also found cool the urban footage around the streets of Athens.
Superb train. I was surprised at the side corridor/compartments layout and would love to see the other carriages. This sort of infrastructure will transform Greece in future but I do hope the old lines in the Peloponnese will be refurbished abd reopened soon as I travelled these in 1970 with hapoy memories. Plus THIS line into Athens on the Akropolis Express from Munich via Vienna, Zagreb, Belgrade etc. in 1972. Yippee!
Direct railway connection of Greece with central Europe stopped because of the war in x Yugoslavia. No Seblon experss to Paris via northern Italy, no Hellas exress to Dortmund, no Akropolis express to Munich via Salonica, Skopje, Nis, Beograd, Novisad, Zagreb, Lubljana, Salszburg (not Vienna, you remember wrong)

I did the same journey, summer 2017. I noticed that the Athina station has been modernized and also the train. I remember the old tracks and the very scary bridges. I saw the new tracks and bridges under construction and happy that these have reduced the travel time. Thessaloniki station still remains the same, I hope the Thessaloniki Metro has been completed.

First ETR 470 will be arriving in Greece between December and January. Four trains are being renowed with 25 Kv CA electrical systems. New bogies are already installed so i think the next works will be the repainting of the exteriors. The last train will cease to operate in Italy 12th December, and then will be moved in workshop for the necessary modding. First services with higher speed will be 25th March 2021 from what i've read.
@@chrsf589 It's still in use only the last one (from Rome to Reggio Calabria region) as "White Arrow" service. The other four trains are already on the workshop with the first near completion. This train, start from 12th December, will be moved on workshop too.

Some works in progress are almost complete, and if the coronavirus emergency had not delayed them, it would've already taken 3h and 20' for the 520 klm from Athens to Thessaloniki (max speed 250 klm/h for this line). And there are some very few extraworks to be done before the trip takes 2h an 55', but this is not scheduled before 2021, and i cannot take it for granted that the plans will be met. Now, far as really high speed trains are concerned, don' t forget that Greece, and i mean the mainland, is almost an island itself, a small very mountainous peninsula, geografically isolated from the rest of Europe and sparsely populated, so it's far from being a railway hub and consequently trains are far from being as efficient as they is in big countries/areas with many big cities, so the very good indeed intercity busservices are more than adequate to cover public transportation in Greece, also taken in consideration the modern highways constructed the last 20 years. Even what looks like mainland on the map, the area of Pellopones in the south half of the greek peninsula, is actutally an island (Peloponese means "the island of Pelopas"). Furthermore, mainland areas themselves are geografically isolated from each other by high mountains, so for many years airports had been indispensable for quick transportation, even for distances that look very small on the map hence rains have never been a transport priority in Greece.
Quite nice to watch. Still: You should always use global standards, do not make way for the 'anglo-autistic fools'! You probably think you are being 'courteous' towards them, but ask yourself this question: By ignoring global standards, and with ostentation, how courteous are THEY? The truth is: By adapting to their folly, you are sending the wrong signal to them. So to indicate the time please use the 24 hour clock, not 'am' or 'pm', as you did at fx 1.15

The mountainous part of the old line was one of the best railway journeys in Europe.

Confusing that there's 2 Larissa Stations on the line
One is in Athens the capital (Also the name of the metro station in line 2) And a city far away from Athens nearby Mount Ossa
Υπαρχει Wifi?

Nice trip report, quite informative. Those coaches seem to have a sort of anti-graffiti livery - interesting anyway.

Have the greek railway company ever thought about a high speed railway line?
Yeah they are getting some etrs from Italy and most of the line is at least 230km/h
Why, is that not fast enough for you? Get on a plane, maybe that's more up your alley.
Nice trip, isn't there any one asked you for your ID or ticket?
In 2018 I took the same train from Oinoi to Thessaloniki and no one ever asked me for anything.
