      A tiny defense of the StarCraft Marine is that, in universe, it's basically a god weapon against all conventional weaponry and is treated as such.
      StarCraft Marines are used as anti-air defenses against everything Terran but Behemoth Class Battlecruisers and they have targeting computers that let them actually land some shots on the clairvoyant superbeings that are Zealots. The rounds are fired at hypersonic speeds and ignore many feet of futuristic duracrete as they're basically used to level buildings.
      Things like Siege Tanks and even military grade Vultures make things like Scorpion Tanks and Lemun Russ Tanks look like fodder.
      The reason they seem like fodder in the StarCraft Universe is because things in the StarCraft Universe are so impossibly overpowered. I mean, Zealots can turn into pure energy and can run at 250+ mph while seeing the future and having 300+ years of battle experience and have perfect teamwork with their units because they're all psychic. Did I mention Psiblades that literally ignore durability of... well basically anything in their universe but other types of psiblades?
      A StarCraft Marine at any significant range should turn Spartan II's into hunks of shredded meat.

    Not true about the Starcraft marine armor being "life-long". You can get in and out of it at will more or less. The armor you see in the trailer was one specific version that was meant to be a prison for the person inside it. Hence, it's permanent.

    • @RexMK-
      @RexMK- 6 лет назад +56

      Not exactly, the suit that Thycus wore (which is the character that appears in the trailer of Wings of Liberty) was specifically modified for that function but it was not a permanent prison suit either, what they did to this suit was in the words of Matt Horner, install a sophisticated transponder which was designed to emit a pulse that would immediately deactivate the vital organs of Thycus killing him in case he will try to take off the suit or someone else will try to remove the suit, this was obviously a preventive measure implemented by Menks to ensure that he would not try to escape and that he would keep his word to kill Kerrigan at the first opportunity, I imagine that in addition to that the suit should contain some security mechanism like a system that will warn those in charge of monitoring Thycus which would warn them if he tried to take off his suit, but beyond that the suit he was wearing was no different to the standardized suits of the Marines Corps.

    • @ShimrraJamaane
      @ShimrraJamaane 5 лет назад +34

      @@RexMK- His suit was just as permanent as prison. It was welded together to prevent removal. You can argue that someone could remove it but in the same vein you can break someone out of prison, as well. There were two ways the suit was used in Starcraft: for regular infantry it could be removed or for prisoners serving a sentence it was permanently sealed until they died or their sentence was served.

    • @phelanwolf6747

      @@megamente7849 ok for some reason my previous 2 comments didn't save, so hopefully this one will. Basically, 40k Space Marines come in many shapes and sizes, and in many different power levels. There are some bolter rounds (plasma I think?) that do significantly more than the usual, and as such probably much more than a SC marine, but I'm just referring to standard 40k marines with standard bolters. SC Marines use the C-14 gauss rifle, which fires an 8mm spike of depleted uranium at hypersonic speeds. As such, these bullets travel almost 2x as fast as a .50 bmg round. These are also spikes, not normal bullets, meaning there is no ejected case, but the entire round is fired, again being extremely large. These rounds are fired at 1500 rpm. As such, the C-14 is much more powerful than a friggin A10 warthog.
      As such, this is much more firepower than a standard 40k space marine. The real kicker here though is the fact that these are the cheep, massed ground infantry units. They are made extremely quickly from readily available resources, and are nothing short of extremely common. This video does not take into account that most SC marines also have a sort of aim bot, and frequently use a drug referred to as "stim pack" which which heightens their reaction speed and aggressiveness, allowing them to fight much quicker and deal more damage. This Eckharts says that there is not much lore given for SC, and while he is correct that it does not have as much as Halo or 40k, it seems pretty obvious to me that Eckharts never bothered to read the full wiki page. Sorry this was long.
      TLDR:
      The SC marine's rifle is more powerful than an A10 warthog's autocannon, and they have much more going for them than Eckharts explains

      The idea of the bolter and its stats were developed in the 1980s when body armor was a flak jacket and prayers so a mini grenade launcher would have seemed like the bees knees. Power weapons and heavy bolter are a different story tho.

    The Terran marine was incredibly underrepresented in this video. I will concede upfront that all of the other troops would defeat them in a 1 on 1 fight, and they are largely disposable, it’s unfair to leave out other details. Most marines are ex-convicts that are brain-panned upon being initiated into service. The Marine corps is made up of a vast array of soldiers, since different members were given different weapons based on their skills. Some had flamethrowers, Grenade launchers, sniper rifles, and some of them had jet packs in the early iterations of their combat armor. The most hardened criminals were sent into the Firebat Reaper Corps, where they used their aggression to their advantage, specializing in close-range combat. Firebats had tough armor and flamethrowers while reapers used dual-wield pistols and jump packs. The point of the marines is to act as one large cohesive unit, with specialized soldiers covering the weaknesses of the others. Marines are far more comparable to Clones than the space marines of the W40K universe. The combat armor IS removable for most marines, but not THIS marine.
    The marine depicted is Tychus Findlay. He is a good friend of Jim Raynor, who is the main character in the StarCraft lore. Tychus was a prisoner of the Terran Dominion, ruled by Arcturus Mengsk. Mengsk had it out for Raynor, as they used to work together but parted ways when Mengsk fed his second in command, Sarah Kerrigan, to the Zerg, a deadly alien species similar to xenomorphs. Kerrigan had been conspiring against Mengsk so he attempted to kill her. Instead of dying, Kerrigan was assimilated into the swarm and became an incredibly powerful Psionic being. Raynor had a love affair with Kerrigan before her transformation and wanted revenge against Mengsk. Tychus was sealed up in a permanently sealed armor suit by Mengsk, and the suit was also primed with a “kill switch” that would activate if Tychus defected. The deal was that if he killed Kerrigan, his record would be wiped and he’d be a free man. He was then sent to Raynor to act as a spy and to convince Raynor to kill Kerrigan. Raynor chooses to save Kerrigan instead. He uses an artifact to de-infest her and, when Tychus goes with him to collect her, he tries to kill Kerrigan. Raynor blocks the bullet with his armor and kills Tychus.

      He seriously underestimates Terran Marines in this video. Starcraft C-14 Gauss Rifles are incredibly underrated. They fire 8mm DU spikes (not standard bullet rounds) at hypersonic speeds. Each spike is about 8 cm long, and weighs about 80-90 grams. In the end, a projectile flying that fast, and being that heavy is around the strength of a 25-30mm round. C-14 Gauss Rifles also have a fire rate of 30 rounds per second, but normally Marines fire in 10 round bursts unless they are using Stimpacks. It also standardly holds around 200 of these spikes before needing to be reloaded. That's still not all. The Terran Marine's armor also essentially gives them aim bot among many other sensors, including IFR. It also augments their strength and speed. I would easily rank a C-14 over a bolter firing only standard rounds, and I'd rank every weapon on this list above the MA5D rifles the Spartans have. That's not even getting into how the Terran Marines would probably outnumber every soldier in this video by a lot, or how the special forces of Terran, like Ghosts fire 25mm Psionically charged rounds at similar velocities, and can cloak to the point only advanced sensors can detect them. Terran Marines have IFR sensors in their suits, but still cannot detect Ghosts.

  • @StarSpawn06
    @StarSpawn06 6 лет назад +20

    Some points of information about Terran marines and the StarCraft Universe in general:
    - Up till recently, Terran Marines were mostly convicts or dissidents rapidly converted into soldiers using a neural reprogramming method which makes them sufficiently obedient and skilled to be sent into battle. The idea is as close as you can get to "mass produced human infantry". Hence the label "cookie cutter soldiers". This also worked as a convenient lore explanation for why you can train and field soldiers so fast in the game. However, as of the most recent point in the StarCraft storyline, Neural Resocialization has been deemed unethical by the Terran Dominion government, and marines are now mostly volunteers who go through normal military training.
    - Terran Marines can get in or out of their armour (generally called CMC armour) wherever they want. When Tychus Findlay got locked into his armour, he had been a convict for many years, and the Terran government did this to him as part of a deal: "kill a certain person for us, Findlay, and we'll set you free!"
    - That said, the fact that you can live with the armour on for an entire campaign shows how complete the armour's life support is, including a built-in-latrine". It also says something about the armour's power source (a miniature cold fusion reactor). No matter how long a campaign takes, I've never heard of a CMC armour user having to "recharge" his armour.
    - CMC armour is also highly customisable. There's one instance in the comics of a mercenary firing mini-missiles from all over his CMC armour, gundam style. The added strength of the armour also allows the user to, by himself, lift a blast door, or wield heavy weapons that an unarmoured human cannot lift, like the Gauss Cannon.
    - Due to how ubiquitous CMC armour is (the user could be anyone from a redshirt to a general), there is no niche in StarCraft equivalent to the MI, Spartans or Astartes, whose status as elite warriors is in part expressed in their power armour and equipment. The closest, in terms of elite status, might be the Ghosts, being superhuman black ops.
    - Most of the Terran factions we see in StarCraft are the descendants of humans exiled far away from Earth. (Believe it or not, Earth has yet to appear in any StarCraft game or novel.) They now live in a part of the galactic fringe known as the Koprulu Sector. Their style reflects a "Wild Wild West"/"frontier colonist" theme. Their heroes (at least the story protagonists) are more like "space cowboys" than space marines".
    - There is a human faction centred on Earth, the UED. They're much more technologically advanced than the K Sector Terrans, but are still impressed by the latters' weapon designs and level of militarisation. When they sent an expedition to the K Sector, they mostly converted and used local assets, so we don'tknow what the full set of UED military equipment looks like.

      R Soul you understand, that there is no 1 type of Space Marine in 40k. He over generalises everything about them, even though he mentions and shows several Chapters. Take the Legion of the Damned. These guys are one of several things; the souls of dead Marines made manifest, time travelers from a worse timeline than the 40k one, erasing themselves from history to change the timeline, and an entire chapter (1000 Marines, because any more is too deadly to the Imperium) got lost in the Warp. How is it a joke entry? Try reading the book, Starship Troopers was Heinlen's first real success as an Author, and the MI were anything BUT incompetant in the book. The film takes the prominant names (not always their sexes however, no women in the MI), some of the prominant events (Klindathu for example), and leaves out EVERYTHING else, including the Mobile Infantry Power Armour.
      There is a LOT of evidence to suggest that the modern view of Power Armour was BORN in the book, every suit of Power Armour you see in modern games/fiction has its genesis in the Mobile Infantry Combat Armour....
      Interesting inclusion, yes, joke? No, but only if you are talking about the BOOK version of the Mobile Infantry and NOT the film version.

    correction for SC marines: the armors CAN be taken off, and can allow the user to run up to ~40MPH
    The armor itself is mainly made to assist the user in using their primary weapon, the C-14. Reason being most standard weapons from that universe can easily wreck the armor (C-14 was seen overpenetrating the armor in one of WoL cutscenes)

    The hardest thing about comparing Terran Space Marines to the others on this list is, these guys are the run of the mill regulars. So they are actually the equivalent of Imperial Guard from the 40k and those random Marines that roll into Covenant grenades from Halo. They are really not the "Elite of the Elite" like Spartans or 40k Marines that you're trying to compare them too. I've not read Starship Troopers in a long time so I don't actually have much of an input on them with the exception of the Personal Nukes they had. Those. Things. Were. Awesome.

Ghosts abilities in the SC games included: firing EMP blasts to take down shields, firing anti-vehicle lockdown rounds and targeting tactical nuclear warheads. Plus they're equipped with a cloaking device that allows them to fire while cloaked. They're pretty much a multi-role unit, though unlike the conventional space marine type, they're more lightly armored but make up for that with their cloak.

The imperial guard look at them as their fighting saviors while the space marines look at the guard as a source of inspiration and a reason to keep fighting. Starcraft is very heavy on the lore. I think you ought to read some of the books before including them because you unintentionally misrepresent them. The book “Heavens Devils” by William Dietz goes over marine training and it’s about as much as halo marines. It’s not like they’re just thrown in the armor without any training and sent to their deaths. Their armor described in the novel “Queen of Blades”. (Aaron Rosenberg) as impervious to small arms fire and massively augments strength and speed. Terran marines aren’t themselves augmented, but the conscripted convicts are neurally resocialized to ensure safety and loyalty. Also their rifles are gauss assisted. The suit also has internal medical systems to prevent bleeding out and save the marines inside.

      DemonOfGadara it's like you read half the lore on orks and then stopped.
      They generate waaagh fields, auras eminating from their being. The more orks you gather the stronger the waaagh field they generate. If they all believe something then the waaagh field makes it true. Space marine engineers once took apart a ork tank to find no mechanical systems. Just a big box labeled "injen". They paint their vehicals red because red vehicles go faster... and then they actually do.
      Once a warboss amasses such a huge waaagh of orks that they easily destroyed every defense the imperium had and were about to invade earth itself. Then they got bored and decided to use their waaagh power to teleport to a more difficult universe. And then they popped away. Because orks are fucking nuts.
      Think about how terrifying that is. 10 foot tall fungus monsters hellbent on killing stuff constantly and whatever they believe is true simply becomes true and nothing you do can stop that and once they infect a planet the only way to rid the planet of them is to scorch the planet completely. Makes the flood look like a swarm of house flies.

    I forgot to mention that C-14s also have underslung rocket/grenade launchers standardly equipped.

      Any other armor on this list also gives amibot. And bolter is much better than C-14 rifle

      StarCraft marines also have one advantage - speed. Their standard march speed is 40 km/h

      you do realize Starcraft was initially planned as a 40k video game right? Chris metzen is a huge 40k fan and everything in Starcrat was a hasty derivation after GW backed out of the project (protoss = eldar, zerg = tyranids). the "standard round" for a 40k bolter is a 75mm self-propelled armor piercing explosive.A bolter is literally a handheld missile launcher. Then there are the variants like any of the heavy bolter patterns which are essentially a handheld missle launcher firing at the rate of an LMG. Space Marine armor mkII - mk X can shrug off bolter rounds and require repeated hits or precision shots to weakpoints before enemy fire hits skin. The equivalent name for a C-14 Gauss Rifle in the 40k universe is an "auto gun" or "auto rifle" and is derided for being weak and ancient relics.

      @@NapGod StarCraft was never planned to be a Warhammer game with developers backing out. That was Warcraft. Bolters fire 19mm HEAP rounds, which are .75 caliber, not 75mm rounds. Even heavy bolters fire bolts with a diameter of around 25mm, and StarCraft Marines also have heavier weapons, such as the heavy gauss rifle, gauss cannon, and underslung grenade and missile launchers, in addition to shoulder-mounted rockets each capable of destroying a tank. 40K Auto rifles have a muzzle velocity of 825 m/s, while gauss rifles have a velocity of at least 1715 m/s given their hypersonic nature. Autoguns also have a fire rate of 625 rounds per second, and typically are not linked with sensors and aimbots. So C14s have over twice the muzzle velocity at minimum, almost 3 times the fire rate (and that's before ultra capacitors, which increase fire rate), and fire rounds that are also made of self-sharpening, pyrophoric, radioactive depleted uranium, in addition to likely being denser than the metal, plastic, or ceramic that autogun rounds are made of. Then there's aimbot, stim, acoustics, IFR, other sensors, resoc, HUDs that display friendlies and known hostiles, and the far superior protection and mobility of powered armor, in addition to many round types that can be quickly switched to on the battlefield for better armor penetration, explosive power, incindiary capabilities, etc. StarCraft was arguably more inspired by Starship Troopers and Alien, but I can see the resemblance.

    spartan II's were totally the best but a warhammer space marine is just over the top (just like all of warhammer 40k)
