    One year, we had just moved house at Christmas & were totally & completely broke. We salvaged a broken Christmas tree from my parents' garbage & repaired it. A week or 2 earlier I'd received some flower arrangements, so we pulled those apart for all the decorative ribbons to make bows & streamers. We made popcorn garlands together & McGyver-ed a star for the tree out of a cereal packet, coloured paper, ribbons & a curtain ring. My son built a garland from a wire coathanger bent into a circle & cut used shopping bags into strips, knotting them all round the circle until it was full & added ribbons etc; We've been hanging that wreath on our door for nearly 20yrs now. Best Christmastimes ever!

      Gwen Engillsdóttir chestnuts is a lovely idea! I must collect some next autumn for Christmas. How did you find the orange slices? For some reason mine stayed sticky last year....

    • @Elemiriel
      @Elemiriel 7 лет назад +1

      sometimes a dusting of salt helps with the stickiness

      Fairyland Cottage I Made them myself just slicing oranges and then I put them in some water and sugar to kind of wax them to last longer and then in the oven at 50° C for about 1 hour or more...

    I'd love to make the nut/popcorn Garland for our tree outdoors for the deer and birds. If I do it inside, there'll be nothing but thread left because my dog will eat it clean! 🤣

    Please please please don't just plant your Christmas tree in a nearby forest. It is a pestspecies in many countries and will alter native biodiversity. Love your Christmas ideas though!!!

    Nice video and nothing wrong with keeping a tree in a pot. But the Christmas tree industry continually plants new Christmas trees to sell. They grow the trees as you would grow any crop, so it's not like cutting down forests exactly. The best ones grow them organically.

    • @FairylandCottage
      @FairylandCottage  6 лет назад +7

      Lorri Lewis so true! The only thing is the tree dies. If it's in a pot it can live forever! :-)

      Lorri Lewis but no living thing wants to die

    • @annonnommee2798
      @annonnommee2798 5 лет назад +3

      @@foxdylan9536 And trees in pots normally do die as they are not meant to grow in pots. Why do we need trees at all? It's only from the Victorian times. Why do we need to have trees inside. Just go outside and look at the trees there. c:

      @annonnommee2798 5 лет назад +1

      I mean I was just agreeing with you. I'm writing that in general, not to you personally. Not expressing things very well lately.

    • @foxdylan9536
      @foxdylan9536 5 лет назад +1

      annon Nommee it’s ok, I have potted trees but they get to a point where they need to go into the ground, but I’m in Australia where it gets ridiculously hot in summer, so I need to ensure the roots don’t bake. When I transplant one, I get a new seedling & it’s a circular system. Could you plant Christmas trees or is there some sort of regulation?

    It is one thing I am wondering; how long does the mantel garland last? Does it get very dry?

      strangely enough it doesn't get that dry... I leave it on the mantel till after new year and it is still green!

    What are you thoughts on artificial trees and garlands? I hear a lot about toxins released in the air

    • @FairylandCottage
      @FairylandCottage  5 лет назад +1

      I do my best to keep things real... I know plastic emits toxins if heated... but don't worry if you have artificial trees already... I don't like the idea of cutting a tree down and then it dies... but you can get lovely trees in pots that you can plant after...

    • @lovealwaysjasmine
      @lovealwaysjasmine 5 лет назад

      Fairyland Cottage I have thrifted artificial trees and was thinking of throwing them out. Do you think it’s ok to use though and that the toxins won’t cause negative effects?

    • @FairylandCottage
      @FairylandCottage  5 лет назад

      Love always Jasmine it’s up to you. If I had artificial trees I would be fine keeping them.
      I think the main problem is if you are burning them. Everything emits some substance so you may need to do more research to rest your mind.

    When you ask a christmas tree vendor for fallen branches it's best to ask just before they close shop, then they're happy to be rid of it.

  • @sarahwest1983
    @sarahwest1983 3 года назад

    A potted Christmas tree is lovely but if you have heathland near you, the landowners need to remove Pine trees so that’s a good thing. Important to ask Landowner permission though
