Every Sunday evening growing up as a kid throughout the 1980s I had dinner with my grandparents and they played WPAT in the background. On Sunday evenings,WPAT dedicated a few hours playing Frank Sinatra songs on Sundays. What wonderful memories! When I hear this, it brings back all those memories!

I used to listen to both WPAT and WRFM back in the 60s and 70s. After that, I moved out of the city, but the music memories are sweet. Soft, melodic music -- not the harsh cacophony they play nowadays -- was the essence of the above-mentioned stations. Even the radio announcers had that soft voice timbre and the perfect English diction -- without screaming. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks so much for this. I grew up in Northern NJ with my parents always playing this station in their car. I didn't appreciate this 'mellow music' at the time, but I sure do now. All the same it was the only station that I ever listened to growing up that was out of New Jersey and not New York City, and i'm very nostalgic for it and the music they played. One day in the early 80's, probably not long before the station went off the air), I was helping my dad paint a small bedroom in the family house and I brought in a portable radio and put on WPAT instead of doing it all in silence. They occasionally mentioned a phone number to call into the station if a listener had a question about the music played. Well, turns out they played this very cool jazzy instrumental track that I just had to know who it was, so I stopped painting and called the station. I dont' think they ever got very many calls, especially from somebody that sounded like they weren't a senior citizen because as soon as the guy picked up the phone and I asked about this track they just played the guy sounded quite surprised. Maybe it was because I was obviously NOT an 'elderly' listener (I was maybe just 30 at the time). I thanked him and was surprised that the record they had just played I actually already had in my record collection ( A Chet Atkins album with guest George Benson). I've never forgotten the sound of the guys voice and how he actually seemed surprised to receive a call from a listener. I guess that didnt' happen too often? Nice guy though and I think the phone was answered on maybe the 2nd or 3rd ring!! That exchange really made me appreciate this local station even more. Where I lived the signal was always very strong and clear, BTW. I was quite sad when the station (and this type of music in general) disappeared off of terrestrial radio.

In the 70's I remember them playing more great stuff like Percy Faith, Bert Kaempfert, Bob Crewe, James Last and Ray Conniff. At 57 yo I no longer listen to much Metal....This is my music now along with 1960s Bossa Nova and 50s and 60s "Exotica" (Faux Polynesian Tiki Music).... The internet radio station "Jango." is a great place to hear a lot of this great music...These longtime WPAT DJs Ken Lamb and Jan Oaks had great serene voices, great to hear them again...

They used to play Montavani also. I used to have this on quietly in the background when studying in piblic school and then College. So sad there are no stations like this on radio. Sirrius channel called Escape is similar but not quite the same. Loved the mellow DJ's and commercials too. Clear Channel and other mega corporations like that have strongarmed their way into radio and force stations to yse thier playlists in all genres. They basically have killed independent local stations. One of my most fond memories and images in my mind was this played by my woodshop teacher in high school and in Winter seeing snow gently falling outside viewed through the high windows in the shop. I still recall the cool littke bix cabinet he made for his tube radio works.

Like other people who have commented here, WPAT was a part of my childhood: my grandparents always had it on and my parent's had it on mostly around the holidays. It has been said that this beautiful music format began to lose popularity in the late 1980s. It saddens me that this was the case. This program strong feelings of nostalgia. Thank you for posting this!
I wished I could find a similar online station that could closely mimic WPAT from this "EZ 93" era of the 1980's...mostly instrumental renditions of pop hits with just the right mixture of contemporary, but soft vocal hits. Like reading the comments about this forgotten type of music. I’m 50 now, but I used to listen to a radio station in Houston TX like this called 92FM KYND in the late 70’s and early 80’s as a kid (yes, I was a little eclectic for a kid back then) If you found your way here, technically I think this is called Elevator Music, Beautiful music or Muzak. And just so y’all know, there is an online radio station (on tunein app as well) that plays this type of music at certain times of the day, it’s called Luxuria music. They have different music shows on there at certain times, but it’s mainly beautiful music. They usually have the title and artist too.

When corporations started buying radio stations beautiful music died aka Clear Channel,I Heart Radio,Cumulous Media etc. Focus Groups got this music off the FM Dial. Ratings are low on FM because there isn't any variety. You have 4 rock stations,4 country,2 hip hops etc etc but nowhere can you find beautiful music on the FM Dial anymore.
WKTZ in Jacksonville Florida finally ended there's on FM though you can still occasionally hear it on tune in thru Jones College Radio.
Only place to go now for beautiful music is Satellite Radio aka SiriusXm which has the Escape Channel. You can also hear it on Dish Networks Channel 973 Channel and finally Amazon has a lot of beautiful music you can listen to thru their unlimited music or download. I've downloaded a lot. They have an extensive library of Frank Chacksfield and they also have Syd Dale,Percy Faith,John Fox,Lots of 101 Strings,Sven Libeak,Henry Mancini,Neville Hughs,Alec Gould,Geoff Love,Manuel And The Music Of The Mountains and the list goes on and on.

"Music Choice" is a service included with many cable companies. They have dedicated stations playing commercial free music. They also have an app. So, you can download their app to your phone, go to the "easy listening" station, use Bluetooth to stream it to your car speakers - and recreate that sound you heard as a kid in your parents' car.

Enjoying the music and comments. Dad would usually listen to this in the car (1980s). I'm now older than he was then - and I listen to stations like this with increasing frequency, usually on streaming/satellite services, or the music channels on cable TV packages. But there is nothing like the original.

I had seen other recordings of beautiful music stations on RUclips, so I wanted to see if the one I grew up with was there. IT WAS! Oh, how I remember that we all badmouthed WPAT loudly to each other - you were only COOL in the New York area in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s if you listened to WNEW or WPLJ. But if you were like me, you were secretly listening to WPAT when it was bedtime - there was nothing better to put you in a calm, relaxed mood. They truly do not make stations like this anymore.

I remember me and my aunt (who was only 1 year older than me) used to make fun of it and beg for them to put on some rock and roll. They never relented. Now I understand what drew them to this relaxing, calm vibe music. It must be an age thing.
