Prior to the encounter, it stole an air balloon from the renowned Gen IV Legendary Pokémon, Heatran. This is outrageous, as Heatran needs an air balloon to walk, as it gets easily injured by the ground. Folks, Mottled Boar is truly a serious problem.
12:59 "Medicham's reversal hits like a cannonball shooting out of a cannon" why did he have to specify where the cannonball was being shot from like what else shoots cannonballs
I thought he was going to say "like a cannonball shooting out of a cannonball." Because out of everything that can be used to describe Medicham's role in battle, I think that is the most fitting.
I must confess I have held contempt in my heart for dodrio as it actually directly outclasses my favorite Pokémon, Fearow. But hearing your love for Dodrio has made me appreciate this flying friend.
Some things you forgot to mention is that Dodrio got a speed buff in Gen 7 and it also got access to Jump Kick in the same gen allowing it to hit rock and steel types more reliably. Unfortunately it also lost access to Jump Kick in the next generation because the move was cut from the games. Dodrio got buffed with a much needed coverage option only for Gamefreak to revoke it in the next game. At least with Jump Kick it could be useful in lower tiers but Dodrio now just suffers in it which is really unfortunate.
Dodrio should be given access to Drill Run, due to it's access to other drill based moves. It would be fitting for a flightless bird to have a ground based attack
It took until Gen 7 for Game Freak to realize that Dodrio can kick things with its powerful legs. The bird has gone its whole career without even being able to use Mega Kick, when half the Pokémon that do learn the move have tiny stumps for legs.
Personally, I liked Dodrio as a kid because of its Tri-Attack. Being able to use 3 elements is just so cool even if its not stronger. Also Gen 3 Tri-attack is the coolest version which is where I first saw it.
Same reason it's nostalgic for me. Tri-Attack was always one of my favourite moves as a kid but I never had anyone who could use it in any of the games. Then when I caught a Dodrio and I saw it had it, I was like "Hey, it has Tri-Attack!" and so it was always on my team from there.
Tri-Attack not getting a proper buff when it became a special move in Gen 4 was a missed opportunity. Bringing it to 95 base power to match the elemental beams feels obvious in hindsight (do people usually call Ice Beam/Flamethrower/Thunderbolt the elemental beams?)
TIL me and Jimmy Cool have the same obscure Pokemon. Incredible. I literally played the entirety of Pokemon Infinite Fusion so that I could finally live my dream of playing with Magic Guard Dodrio. Double Edge, Brave Bird, High Jump Kick, Swords Dance. I don't know if I've ever liked a RUclips video before, but this one deserves it, thank you so much for making this video.
Okay fuck it I'll elaborate further. A couple years back a friend of mine made a custom Pokemon tabletop RPG ala DnD, me and all the other players were basically assembling our custom teams so we could become the new Gym Leaders for a new region that was gonna be explored. And the rest of the players defaulted to picking their favorite types, makes total sense. But I convinced my brother and GF to pick sliiightly wackier themes. I sold my GF on theming her team instead of on a type, instead just making a Dog team. She started with an Eeve, found a Growlithe, an Absol, and had a dream of catching the legendary dogs to become the final Gym Leader of our new region. My brother made a Farm animal themed team, with his favorite Poke, Tauros. He got a Miltank, a Herdier, a Mudsdale (Horse Council represent) and dreamt of a beautiful farmhouse Gym in the tall grass somewhere. Very cool. Anyway I went fully deranged and the only theme for my team was "Pokemon with multiple heads." So my team had my signature Doduo (pronounced Doodoo) and my final team would contain a Magneton, a Dugtrio, an Exeggcutor, and a Hydreigon. It would have been beautiful. My love for this goofy ass bird is not fragile. (Also forgive all the misspelled names. Idfk how to spell Pokemon names, I've touched grass before)
Dodrio actually improved a lot in gen 7 with access to both sword dance AND junp Kick, which was sick bc it finally was able to do good damage to regirock, his natural counter, with also 10 stat boost in its speed. It was a premier wallbreaker in SM PU, i hope game freak continue buffing dodrio in the future, like a regional form or maybe a mega.
Left and central heads always have been on the same page since Doduo. Then right head pops into reality and gets bullied for having a different opinion on matters. By the time we get to the 3D model poor righty has snapped.
You summed it up in the intro: it is not just a somewhat regular bird, it is a fricking three-headed bird. It is way more memorable in terms of design (also a bit of Gen 1 privilege)
I felt like Dodrio was bad and forgettable. But since I am a Pokemon UNITE Player, Dodrio became one of the most popular Pokemon. And also has one of the most unique gameplay with Run Away, an offensive ability. If it was not for UNITE, I would have never thought of her. Sorry about being off-topic and Dodrio is one of the coolest designed Gen 1 Mon.
Jimothy, I am beginning to think that we may be related. I, too, was a Muk & Dodrio enjoyer as a lad. It's good to find such fellows of culture, and with some luck maybe some others may find their way here
Dodrios real claim to fame is it's iconic fly animation in Pokemon stadium. Answering all possible questions as to why this bird without wings can learn such a move
I understand you, Jim. As a child i was enchanted by Dodrio's wacky sprite in Pokémon Ruby, and by how special it felt since it was a bit of a rare encounter in the Safari Zone. Of course Doduo was common, but seeing a wild Dodrio and trying to catch it felt special to me. This also happened to me with Golduck and Pinsir in this very same Safari Zone.
I used him to great effect on the singles ladder back in Sun and Moon on my sticky web team. I used a Focus Sash w/ a Hasty nature. Swords Dance, Drill Peck, Jump kick and Flail. Insane damage and wallbreaking potential.
Another thing which is cool about dodrio is that Yellow, from the pokemon adventures manga, has a dodrio that they ride on, which is pretty cool! Imagine riding on a two-headed or three headed emu as your main form of transport. Thats pretty cool!
Jimothy, it is me. I am the other Dodrio fan. Hello. It is wonderful to see another so candidly appreciate the unparalleled artistry in this normal pocket monster bird with three heads. He certainly is a fella. I would like a whole flock of Dodrio, just so I could count their adorable, goofy little heads. I could just take the individuals and multiply them by three, but where even is the fun in that, I ask you? Nowhere, that's where.
Dodrio is my personal favourite Pokémon. It's a shame that it has limited use competitively but the mere concept of a silly, wingless dodo/kiwi that has three heads reaches my heart. I love thinking that until hydeygon, dodrio was the only thing we had as the "hydra Pokémon" and would love to see it getting buffed. I would love even more if it had a new evolution
I never hated the “hits like a truck” as it seems like I’ve always heard this since I’ve been on the internet, but I love how Jim puts his own spin on it now. Thank you Jim❤
In pokerogue, they gave this thing triple axel and hyper drill. It also used to get multi-attack. But either way, just having access to those moves made this thing insane. And then they also gave it the ability parental bond, which I'm actually not adverse to, and it just crushed things. I'm pretty sure in my run using it, I was able to like two shot the final boss with just this Pokémon and some redirection. Cool stuff. And you said it in a recent video, and I agree, that when people get mad about what ROM hacks do to some Pokémon and they make these crazy bills, there's kind of a reason for it. Dodrio desperately needs a niche and I think it's going to have to be it's the bird that could hit a lot of times or it's the bird with these ridiculously high base power moves.
Jimothy. I began to watch your videos fairly recently and you are the first person I've ever met who also likes dodrio. This is truly a momentous moment.
14:24 the gen 4 left head is the head that lost everything but it knows it has to get back up again and face the cruelty of the world with pride and decisiveness
One important thing that makes Dodrio truly stand out from its peers is its ability to use the move "fly", because no matter how your mental image of Dodrio using fly looks like, it will be absolutely hilarious and should be treasured.
in gen 10 we're gonna get the final stage of the doduo line called dodruple, it learns headbutt and gains a brand new ability called Multiple Beaks that quadruples secondary effect chances
I feel as though in the earlier gens he should have gotten high jump kick, Dodrio is always depicted as running extremely fast and jumping very high, would be a game changer in gens 2 and 3 with that move.
Incredible of Jimothy to assert that if Dodrio has no fans, not only has he perished, but that it has happened in an ultimately terrible fashion. This is insane.
I loved using Dodrio in my childhood leaf green save file because he got Tri Attack, and that was back with the type based physical special split so it was surprisingly good for it
Mr. Cool, I have a question to ask. You see, I am quite the unexperienced Pocket Monster educator and I was wondering why this particular set for the esteemed Dodrio at 8:41 would deem it proper to dedicate a precious attacking slot for the move Baton Pass instead of just switching out the three-headed wingless bird with its fellow triple eyed magnetic cyclops like a normal person. I will wait for your correspondence, but I will happily accept any explanation from other folks who happen to stumble upon this comment within this sea of commendable remarks. Thank you in advance.
Good greetings Sire godfreysneakily2802! While I am not an expert like our mutual educator, Mr. Cool, I believe I can offer some sort of explanation. You see, when just switching, you are locked into your desired switch to no matter what. However, with the use of baton pass, you are guaranteed to use the move after your opponent switches, or see if your opponent did not switch, leading to two paths of fate: 1.) Your opponent switches, you get to see what they switched to, and react accordingly, or 2.) Your opponent doesn’t switch and you can ensure a switch into a decent matchup, instead of switching solely on a prediction. TL;DR, it is a less risky version of just straight switching because you can react to your opponent’s turn. I do hope this finds you well, and wish you a good day!
when Jim says something is for the birds this is the bird in question.
this is the birds in question*
@rajkanishu this raises an interesting question. Is Dodrio one bird with three heads, or three birds sharing one body?

It had hyper cutter or it’s hidden ability sheer force
Unfortunately, this Trapinch has the ability "Hyper Cutter", perhaps poor planning on Jims part.
Mottled Boar has the ability Mold Breaker, hence why they both have MB as initials
he teamed up with a mold breaker user
12:59 "Medicham's reversal hits like a cannonball shooting out of a cannon" why did he have to specify where the cannonball was being shot from like what else shoots cannonballs
Cannonballs could possibly hit you by Falling onto you or being thrown at you
Monkey D. Garp from one piece throws them
I thought he was going to say "like a cannonball shooting out of a cannonball." Because out of everything that can be used to describe Medicham's role in battle, I think that is the most fitting.
like someone else said, Garp from One piece just throws them at you as well as a giant battleship
Cannonball being sent towards you by a professional bowler
Mans didn't bring up Dodrio getting Jump Kick in Gen 7 and +10 Speed as its buffs, this is insane folks
Yeah dude that thing stuck around in UU for like 2-3 months, and a real amazing PU showing through USUM
I came here to comment the same thing! Banded sets hurt with Return, Jump Kick, BB and Knock
