You can feel nothing cutting yourself at first. When I accidentally deeply cut my finger with a razor I didn't even notice it at first, but the blood flow was considerable.
0:08 can’t believe how well-timed that was the glass falls just as he’s turning to give us a glimpse of his crazy fucking face. This movie was on another level. The fact that this wasn’t even scripted makes this scene god tier.
Fun fact for those that don’t know the mirror breaking was accidental Jake Gyllenhaal wasn’t supposed to break it but the director kept this in the final cut
BEAST_ 1996 he wasn’t even supposed to scream. That was improvised but it works well with the character. It’s one of the only moments where we see him show real emotion and it’s quite scary. Jake Gyllenhaal is underrated.
Fucking brilliant symbolism. We never see his face but only his reflection in this shot as if his inner ego is SCREAMING with anger and the shattered glasses on the mirror is missing pieces for the only piece hanging is his determination to succeed. Not happiness or wealth or any of that. Contrasts so well with his charismatic persona in the rest of the film. Gyllenhaal was horribly overlooked for his performance in this by the Academy.
My gym crush which became my gym partner for about 2 weeks now just told me about her new "fling" that she met like 3 days ago. This video is literally me rn

Jake: *Has a mental breakdown and breaks a mirror* Everyone in the production: No, this isn’t how you’re supposed to play the game. The guy who shot the scene: I don’t care, I love it
- the fact that this was completely improvised by jake gyllenhaal is amazing ! ! not to mention he sliced his hand open as well and continued filming anyway !
Wow if this was off the cuff I’m shocked the camera didn’t get in the reflections unless it either was A. CGIed out or B. Filmed at an angle so it couldn’t possibly happen

It's great that the remaining top-half of the mirror slides down to catch a glimpse of his face. And the whole thing was still ad-libbed.
Simply amazing how when he cut his hand, he didn't even wince in pain; simply stone faced. Great acting right there.
You can feel nothing cutting yourself at first. When I accidentally deeply cut my finger with a razor I didn't even notice it at first, but the blood flow was considerable.
The simple fact that Jake actually did this part without being told to do so in the script is _terrifying._ He truly got into the role of Lou.
he actually cut his hand while breaking the glass.
Laura Schlieselhuber yeah I read about that, didn’t Leonardo de caprio do the same? (Don’t really know if I’m spelling his name correctly)

Just here from that story on Ellen too
