It breaks my heart that he can’t fly just yet. Birds are meant to soar in the winds and feel free and he can’t do it due to his poor feather conditions. But he’s so determined because of how gentle and motivating and caring you guys are. You guys are truly a gift to birds and their owners. Thank you guys for all you do. 🐦 ❤️

It messes with my head that an adult bird would ever have to be "taught" to fly.. or "allowed" to fly might be a better word.
It's literally what they're here to do! Sad.
Sunny's hesitant (and then more confident) little wing flaps were absolutely precious.

I just bought a green winged macaw who’s in the same condition as sunny. He was locked in small cage in the store for 5 months with no interactions or even caring for him they will catch him and hold him down with a towel to trim his nails so now when I approach him he’ll put his leg on my hand not to step up but to keep me from touching him . I’m experiencing the same thing you are experiencing with sunny and having a slow progress but that’s fine this is my favorite bird and I can’t wait till he’s ready for his first flight. Btw all my knowledge and progress I got from watching your guys videos thank you so much for the information and love for birds you guys are giving us ❤️

He’s an amazing boy and I think he will be one of the most rewarding birds you’ve EVER worked with. He’s finally going to know love and the feeling of being safe. What they did to his wings should be a crime.

Amazing video! Great work, Dave! 🥰 So inspiring! I had 2 breakthroughs just this week. My grey Ligaya took awhile to embrace showering. She always just tolerated it at best but didn't show signs of liking it as much, but strangely just this week at 2 yrs old she suddenly started almost begging for it every afternoon, and dances/vocalizes/flaps as I spray! 2nd, my bird finally accepted perching on my hand this week instead of my shoulder when we go for walks outside. Though seemingly simple it's kind of a huge step for her to do that. She's always been so secure on my shoulder but I've been working on weaning her off it.

I rescued an IRN about the time you guys had touché and lefty. I found him on Aussie craigslist (called Gumtree). He had a head injury (degloving) and we were home number 4. He was 18 months old.
He came to us with a tonne of issues. Hand fear, poor diet, injured head, savage wing clip.
I took him to a good avian vet and once I got the all clear, my husband and I got to work.
We had a consult with Jamie Leigh (to help us navigate a severe hand fear). We target trained him, which led to teaching him some tricks.
Cut forward, his flight feathers are in and we’ve taught him to recall.
This week, he’s decided that I’m allowed to pet him on his head.
He’s just been a super slow bird- but I absolutely love him to bits. I don’t mind that he’s slow- we’ve hopefully got 30 years!

I rescued a 23 year old B/G macaw a few years ago, and was basically told she can't be around cats, dogs, she bites, and she only ate grapes and monkey nuts! Her cage was so tiny she couldn't open her wings and her tail dragged on the floor. She was also outside in an unheated shed (I live in England). Lady is the 1st bird I've had, so was definitely in at the deep end! She now has her own room, with ever changing jungle gym, tree etc and is no longer scared of other animals. I only found you guys at the end of last year and have learn so much, I've changed her sleep pattern, her diet, we are working on the bathing, she target trains now, although still working on being gentle and not biting the stick. And she learning step up, we are now at the stage of stepping up by targeting, and not luring, but my biggest problem is moving hercwhike on my hand, she's so unstable and doesn't like it if I move at all while holding her. She is starting to hold and eat treats while kn my hand instead of stepping down to eat them, so I guess we are moving forward but its a learning experience for both of us.

It’s so cool to see his progress. He does seem like a loving bird. I’ve been around animals my whole life and I’ve trained all of my pet companions myself. Recently, I’ve adopted an adult cockatiel that was deemed un-adoptable. I was told that he bit people, didn’t like anyone. Completely unsociable. I love a good challenge so I took him in. After about 4 months of training, we’re completely un-separable. He never bit me, and just wants to cuddle and be loved. Keep on with the great videos guys. I really enjoy them.

The African Grey is very social & likes to be with people. The Macaw is scared of so much. She won’t step up easily. She is getting better at Target training. She is also eating the new BT diet better than the Grey. Seeing your videos remind me that it is not just our Macaw. They will do it on their own schedule. Patience & time for our Macaw.

Oh my gosh Dave and Jamie and Capri! I love you 3! You're amazing. Sunny reminds me of Albert, my rescue Harlequin. I've had him for about 3 months. He is slow! We don't know if he has brain damage. He was left outdoors in Cache County Utah during the winter with a heat lamp and is missing toes. He was also in a cage too small. I don't know if he will ever fully spread his wings. But he is stepping up really well, he is starting to use more words, and he loves head kisses too. My 14-year-old showers him often and he is learning to put up with the outdoor hose better and better. He doesn't mind the indoor shower and he went kayaking with my husband and me around a quiet reservoir - want to invent a macaw life preserver? It kills me to think of anyone harming, even unintentionally, these beautiful birds.

I love what you’re doing with Sunny! So, we have a Senegal that was found outside my husbands office in Stamford ct in 2016. long story short, I made a stink to rescue him since I knew he needed human assistance. We hooked up with ct parrot rescue & we looked hard for his original owner. Never found though we had some scary attempts to claim him! We were asked to adopt him out and even foster him out but we decided to keep him and learn everything possible about parrots we could. You’re videos & tons others taught us about the parrot plight & history, capture, breeding, etc. we studied some training tips & did some clicker training (I don’t use it but I am a certified dog trainer) so here we are bird people now! Our sennie, Ziggy is great. He favors my husband but is pretty good with me. I shower him and minor grooms as well as I help him with pin feathers. I learned to not get him too excited over time because I play with him more and sing to him so he gets heated with me sometimes. I have been bitten really badly quite a few times. That sucks!! Lately he’s more screechy than before. He stops and gets chatty or starts ringing when I sing or talk to him. For outside he gets some outdoor time in a carry cage. We live in the woods. He’s had his wings clipped recently because he was flying around the house to get closer to my husband in his office since we work from home now with covid and if we are home his cage is open. I’m looking for a poop catching stand with a toy or 2 capability for my husbands office. I can kiss his head and back but I have to be careful, he will simulate a kiss with me. His beak touch’s my nose or upper lip, dry ever any of my saliva on it! I wouldn’t want him to get sick. We have an avian vet who comes to the house when necessary & once a year for a yearly exam. What else? We feed him fresh veggies at night & fresh fruit in the morn as well as a Harrison’s bird bread mini muffin from the batch I make every two weeks & all day he has Harrison’s food chunk as well as Harrison treats in a wheel. He eats A LOT! LOL! But he’s in good form and quite muscular the vet says. We wish we knew where he was before we found him! He’s a talker but somethings are clear some it takes a while to understand & when he came to us, it was either undetectable English or might have been another language. I still have a list of sounds and possible words he said when we found him with intentions to find his original human, if they could list his regular verbal and sound routine. We love him so much!! Birds require a certain attitude to have & care for. Our poodles love him too, especially since he grows food down for them!! lol

Heh . I just finished reading your post to Dave and you really put alot of thought and shared alot of this amazing story with Dave and all who follow the lives of birdtricks Dave and jamie.
You had some valid concerns, and like I said seemed obvious you would have liked some sort of feedback, and I personally wished you had gotten some nod that confirmed your effort to get some tips. Your post came hours after mine and I get it that not every post can be read and replyed to, but alot of posts were basic comments, where you really put effort into voicing your concerns and at least maybe a few past shows that made reference to your situation may have been of some help OR a place to which you could find some of what you could benefit you and your husband deal with your situation.
I wish I could help in some small way but I'm one of the long time fans that doesn't own a bird but love watching what birdtricks does and stands for.
I think what you and your husband have done is amazing, and even after being bitten several times you didnt give up which speaks volumes to the kind of people you are.
Bless you for taking in this bird and for not giving in or up on him.
As we know the world has way to many places overflowing with birds people gave up on, or they bird wasnt cute anymore.
So your already a Hero to me, if that helps.
Even making sure to have a proper avian vet seeing him is amazing given as you said live in a wooded area.
I wish you and your husband all the best, and I HEARD YOU.❤❤❤👍👍.

When I got my ringneck she already had clipped wings. When they grow out I want to free flight train her! Whenever I do flight/recall training with my budgies my ringneck flaps really fast holding onto her stand trying to say “look mom I can fly too” and wanting to earn a treat. She has observationally learnt recall already through me doing it around her with my budgies. She recalls 100% of the time (better than my budgies tbh) on foot and even flies up from the ground about 10cm high to try get to me faster. She wants to fly so bad and I can’t wait till she can. I can’t wait to see Sunny flying too 💙

Did the person who had him before have muscle weakness? It seems like he's unsure if he can rely on you holding him without making him nervous about falling. Without the ability to fly, it makes it even more important to make sure what you're going to stand on is reliable. Another amazingly lucky opportunity for you to prove to him just how enjoyable his interactions with humans (who know how to care for him) can be! You restore my faith in humanity with every video. Thank you SOOO much for what you do.

About 10 years ago I had a Red Masked Conure that was 20 years old and wild caught. I was his 4th and final owner. He had the best 6 years of his life with me.

    So beautiful to see!
That whole thing with kissing his head whilst giving a treat is something I’m totally doing with my birds. It’s crazy I’m still learning new things after all this time working with birds.
    Love yuh Birdtricks team!

I love Sunny updates so much!! Even if they are tiny progresses or just to see how he is going. I love to see this little guy finally get the love and attention that he never got and to see his feather condition improve. Poor little guy.

This is literally one of the best things I’ve ever watched on RUclips. Seeing him spread his wings like that was amazing. How people can treat other living beings that have feelings blows my mind. I desperately want to get a parrot (not sure which kind yet) but my husband and I are waiting until our children are in high school and our elderly dogs pass away (hopefully not for a long time yet.) so for now I’m just researching and learning everything I can. You and Jamie are doing such an amazing thing with these birds. ❤️❤️❤️

So sweet, it’s so similar to training horses ! You never go in with intentions of completing a task. Everything depends on the them not us. Or at least it should if you want to be successful in training. The mood, mindset, past history etc everything comes into how your going to approach your training and gives you a pretty good idea the pace you need to take. Every animal is different just like humans, you need to respect that and work with it for success ❤️

Sunny reminds me a bit of a rescue bird I named Penny. She had been left on the doorstep of a bird store the day I visited. She was in a ratty spare cage the store had and I could just tell that although easily frightened, Penny wanted to be a part of... something. She was a grey-cheeked 'keet, same as my then recently deceased grey-cheek, Wiley, so I got onto the waiting list for her. A day or so later, I got the call that the people ahead of me had declined. I instantly accepted, even though they were overcharging for her.
When I brought her home, I told her that even if she never trusted humans, in memory of Wiley I would make her the best home I could.
It took a few months for her to come out of her protective shell, but she became the most loving, gentle bird I ever had. Due to a previous injury, she would never fly, but to see her flutter out of her cage every day and trustingly drop into my cupped hands was such a joy.
    I love you Penny! (RIP)

I rescued a blue and gold macaw a month and a half ago. In her previous home she was locked in a shed because sadly they thought she was to loud to be in the house. When she got to the sancuary people would say they were interested and spend a day with her but would never come back. So me and my husbend brought her home. She didnt trust us at first, scared of everything. Now after a good diet and lots of out of cage time she is wanting to spend more time with us. A fue days ago she asked my husbend to pick her up and it wormed my heart. We are going at her pace and not pushing her and its working. We also have 3 other birds and they all have there own does and donts.

Dave, I don't have any birds, so although I've watched the Birdtricks channel for years, sometimes I do find it hard to tell what the birds in your videos are thinking. i.e. reading their body language. But Sunny is the first of the Birdtricks birds whose thoughts and feelings I feel I'm reading well. Maybe it's because he does everything slowed down! I love how he "feels" his way into the step-up, as if he's doing it in the dark, also how he looks at your face a lot, and also your moving hand while you're talking. In short I am totally charmed by "Slow Hand Sunny"! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of him and watching him continue to blossom.
