Ethiopia's Meseret Defar claims gold in the women's 5000m event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. (10 August 2012).
Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya won silver in the event with Defar's compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba claiming the bronze medal.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

There was just something about her face when she won that was inspiring and emotional for me. Her cries of elation almost moved a grown man to tears. Hope to watch her run again in Rio

+dizzywow Yes, in interviews Defar comes across as being much more personable than Dibaba . Maybe Dibaba is a little bit reserved in those situations whereas Defar is more open - always smiling and laughing .

I am blessed to live in the era of Dibaba-Defar. That means if both are present in a race, Ethiopia will definitely get a gold. We need another Debaba-Defar era now in Ethiopia.

So I did 3 miles today (about equal to a 5km)... Took me almost an hour cause of how out of shape I am. I have NOTHING but respect for people who push themselves to this level of competition, in any sport.
It’s greediness not to appreciate the people of GB🇬🇧 I have had the opportunity to watch so many Olympic Games and events through TV windows but the fans from the stadium and their encouragement, the atmosphere, everything was so special that could leave a lasting impression on us. After I started running for only to qualify for 800m, I got to know there struggle for 5000m n 10000m race. Huge respect from my side to all the athletes running.truely u guys deserve much appreciation.👍👍👍

Such a splendid race is so beautiful ! Everyone deserved so much and the final lap and last 100 meters is full of worthy women. But most of all, after winning, tears of Meseret Defar are so authentic, and she thanks Maria and Jesus, in kissing her little icon. Today, as we all live misery and dramas, it is a great sign of dignity and hope and faith.

I like how the people who are first at the start of the race usually end up placing last, and the people who are last at the start of the race usually end up placing first. :)
They don't have the endurance so they try to put a gap between them early on. It doesn't work with the pro athletes though.
