  • With chondral defects of the femoral condyle, microfracture surgery rehab emphasizes recruitment and strengthening of the quadriceps, especially the vastus medialis oblique (VMO). The goal is to minimize muscle loss and function resulting from atrophy of the quadriceps from joint effusion and disuse. Because the quadriceps is critical for improving the knee's stability, rehab needs to minimize muscle loss from non-weight bearing from no walking, squatting, and negotiating stairs based on surgical restrictions. Don't wait! Begin pain-free strengthening immediately.
She's performing straight leg raises in tall sitting with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on her left thigh (distal VMO and mid-vastus intermedius) to elicit a stronger muscle contraction. At the time of this video, she was nine days out from microfracture surgery. The NMES allows full muscle engagement to achieve pain-free and full knee extension.
As always - train both legs!
Effective and efficient rehab is criterion-based, not time-based.

Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. STOP exercising if you experience any symptoms of weakness, unsteadiness, light-headedness/dizziness, chest pain or pressure, nausea, or shortness of breath.
Performing these exercises should not cause pain. If you experience pain while exercising, decrease the speed of your movement. If the pain persists - STOP. Mild soreness after exercising may be experienced after beginning a new exercise.

Hi, thanks for the question. The procedure you are referring to is a very different procedure. This surgery involves the articular cartilage.

Hi. The neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) unit is being used to help recruit more of the quadriceps muscle. It is used to build back the muscle after surgery.

Hi. Thank you for your question. The two electrodes are part of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). This is used to help activate the quadriceps.
