I love my Carvin guitars. Got them before the move and restoring of the Kiesel brand. For those that have never met him, keep n mind Jeff has been making guitars in the family business for decades. He's bound to have biases. Plus the build quality and finishes are top shelf.
I used to live a mile down the street from Carvin's Santa Ana store, in the 1980s. I drove by for a few years then one day I stopped in, and walked out with 2 beautiful custom made models that weren't picked up by the people who ordered them. I was blown Away! Ebony boards, fantastic pickups, amazing finishes and body woods. I loved them more than my 74 Tele deluxe. I don't play shred type stuff at all but for general rock and blues and everything else I still love the Carvin. I still have a 100 watt 2x12 Carvin amp(sadly it needs a new transformer and I can't find anyone to work on it). I'm glad the Kiesel guys are making great guitars. Good video man!
Although I'm not a fan of Kiesel (mainly because of the owner's antics) this is really a great price for a U.S. made instrument of this quality, if the level of attention to detail and fit and finish is consistent across the two other instruments.
I was SO close to dropping the $ for a kiesel.... then the entire roasted maple thing happened....and honestly there is NO excuse for how Jeff talked about his customers. So I went for an Ormsby instead... and I couldn't be happier.
The guitars can be as good as possible, if you think it;s ok to go online and berate your customers publicly, I WILL NEVER GIVE YOU A PENNY. Kiesel is a banned brand in my house.
I guess I missed all the fireworks. Tried to find this big scandal video but best I could find was Jeff talking about roasted wood. Not sure why that's causing a big kerfuffle? Someone cc a link so us rubes have a clue?
Same. They were already a no go in my mind but when the roasted maple incident happened the company is done in my mind.
@@OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy A customer bought a guitar, and was unhappy with the amount of roasting the neck had. The customer made a criticism, and instead of offering any remedy, Jeff made a video criticizing the customer just because he didn't like the product.
i had a bad experience with ormsby. it took two years for me to get my pre paid guitar
@@stephenchow5161 only speaking about my own experience. They got a gtr to me within a week
I typically don’t like the way Kiesels look, but this one!!! Oh my goodness, it is just wonderful looking all the way around & sounds as good as it looks. If I were to buy a Kiesel, this would be the model that I would purchase. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾.
Beautiful guitar! The extra thin cuts Kiesel can make for book matching their tops makes for some great looks. Very little mismatch... Thanks for another great vid, Phil!
Used Suhrs hold their value compared to Kiesels. The reputation for Suhr is just much better, and they make great guitars. Glad you like your Kiesel though, sounds good!
Funny to see people who won´t buy a perfectly amazing guitar because they dislike Jeff, calling him a child.
Suhr is more expensive but a lot better Especially the pickups
plus a LOT easier to resell
@@lordmanshaft1112 Kiesels seem really nice, and the few I've played were amazing. Why is their resale value so poor?
7stringslinger74 a lot of people won’t want to buy a Kiesel anymore after the owner acted like a complete jackass to loyal customers. At least that’s the case for me.
@@jakeybball I wasn't completely aware of the situation Jeff made on his broadcast, but what I do know is that he apologized. Still not sure It should have lead to the altercation it did though!
@@jakeybball but buying one second-hand wouldn't give said owner any money, hey
I have an AZ and a Suhr...I've owned a Kiesel.... the neck and fretwork are worth paying more for a Suhr. Factory proximity isn't a factor. All three companies make good guitars...Suhr is a cut above.
Agreed.
Suhr is a "cut above" but so is their pricing :)
While I agree Suhr makes better feeling necks, I don’t feel like it’s a difference worth 1.5k IMHO
The Mog true but you get what you pay for
@@themog4911 Exactly, slightly better at twice the cost....
As much as some of the customer service issues have been off-putting, I still think they are some of the best tops in the game and when I see folks trashing their finishes I'm totally confused. What else in the price range looks remotely that good?
Check for example Markline guitars in italy,
Agree. Damm good guitars.
Agree, nothing in the price comes close Daren
I’m sure both suhr and kiesel guitars are high quality guitar. But Suhr holds the value more in the used market.
Yeah. Buying a kiesel is a really poor financial decision if you are to ever to re-sell the guitar. I had $2400 kiesel and was fortunate to get $1250 for it in near mint condition. No one really values them anywhere near their worth Their electronics beside the pickups are actually pretty low quality. But, they play good and sound good and are a top quality build. Sometimes the QC on fit and finish isn’t great.
Kalen McClain Kalen McClain What you can do when ordering one is staying close to the base model price, keep it simple, don’t go crazy and you’d get an awesome guitar for about 1.5k and then if you decide to sell it you’ll get pretty close to the original price. If you want to spend 3k on a guitar you better look for something else
Santiago Barragán yeah a totally valid route, but compared to an American strat Around 1200 and a kiesel there’s still a huge difference. The strat at the lowest could get 900 and a kiesel might have to go for 600 unless you’re trying to wait 2 years to sell. People just aren’t willing to pay much for them.
Just look at the sold listings on reverb and see the disparity. Fenders will hold 20-40% more value over any kiesel and carvins are even less. You can get a koa top dc from 2000 for like 500$. It’s pretty bad. I wish it were different.
@@kalenmcclain895 Yeah, used Carvins are a steal, I don't think it's the same for Kiesel guitars though, I'm checking and it's hard to find one under $900(which is a very good price still), maybe it's just my perception but I think that the resale value is getting better. I remember it was waaay worst like just a year ago. Edit: I still agree with you that for 2-3k you better buy something else
Santiago Barragán haha. Yeah. I rechecked and was surprised what some people were getting. Looks like they are going up. Although, there were far more that sold for less than their worth. I was even surprised to see the old carvins going up. And it really made me sick that I found a listing on a 90s American standard strat just like one I sold for 600 about 5 years ago and they got 1900 for it. Right now I’m into early 80s Ibanez guitars. They don’t cost a whole lot and are top quality.
That is a sweet guitar and is so much more reasonable than a Suhr Modern. Well done Keisel.
Phil, your video quality, production and audio quality has really stepped up. It's really cool to see. Your content is always awesome, but I find it cool that you are making these tweaks. Cheers
Thank you.
@@PhillipMcKnight I should be thanking you, I started this RUclips thing because of you. Cheers
I agree!
pro trick: you can watch series at flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Jayden Callan definitely, I've been watching on flixzone} for since december myself :D
It's hard to tell from a RUclips video but those humbuckers sound really muffled. I like the single coil sound. I'd have to hear it in person to judge the sound fairly.
You’re not wrong. I have those same humbuckers in my kiesel. The split sound is really really good. But it is super dark in the humbucker setting. The thin neck I have is probably the best playing neck I’ve ever had. It rivals any guitar at any price range for sure. The one thing I don’t like is Jeff Kissel’s customer policy. No returns on some products (like roasted maple). No neck replacement orders. Kinda weird and anti-customer statements all over his social media (just look up his recent customer support controversy)
GuitarPlayerFromThe80s I mean yeah obviously but the pickup sound is noticeably darker. It’s not really a bad thing more of a taste thing.
Every Kiesel I"ve heard has sounded terrible, no different with this one
Depends on what you are listening to these clips with. Not to mention the skill level of the player demonstrating the guitar.
I agree the humbucker tone was pretty lackluster.
Wish they had kept Carvin as the brand name. Just sounds much cooler. Plus Kiesel is German for gravel, which might be why it puts me off subconsciously. And Kiesel rhymes with a German word for Peeing.
How do you sleep at night? Lol
Think it’s their last name.
TonePilot hahahaha I know right? 😂
David Morisset yea. Sometimes it’s just not the phonetically best choice. Carvin was a construct of portions of the kids names or something I forgot. I’d have to google it.
@@nalukeko "Carvin" was named after Carson and Gavin Kiesel (Lowell Kiesel's eldest sons), who still run Carvin Pro Audio. Mark Kiesel (youngest son) was the one who handled the guitar side. They separated into separate companies and went back to Kiesel as the guitar brand. Kinda hard to keep a name you don't have the rights to, and I don't know why someone would want to use a company name that was named after their siblings and not them.
If Kiesel is good enough for Will Swan then it's definitely good enough for all of us home musicians
Except, speak for yourself dude.
Careful,we got a STAR in the comments
I have a Carvin/Kiesel Holdsworth Fatboy HF2s(sadly, retired model) and I love it. Jeff can be an asshat, and I understand why so many people are turned off by it, but they make good guitars. I've never played a Suhr, and don't know that I ever will, but there isn't anything I would want differently about my guitar.
Far better choice than any Gibson on the market. Thank you.
Easily the best professional no memes guitar channel on RUclips! Good work talking egg!
I love it when you said "I can't stand a bridge pickup on clean, it drives me crazy".
Great review, Phil. Appreciate it. For future reviews, I’d love to hear more details about craftsmanship such as: how level are the frets? How straight is the neck? How flush is the nut with the fingerboard? How smooth are the fret ends? Are the fretboard edges rolled? How tight is the neck pocket? Was anything loose? How well did the truss rod work? Does the hardware feel high quality? The playing examples are great but there are so many variables between your guitar and my ears that how the guitar sounds in the video isn’t that important to me. Especially since I can always put new pickups in easy enough. When thinking about buying, I want to know how good a guitar’s bones are. :-)
Kiesel's quality control is excellent. Phil probably got bored because the Kiesels never have any issues.
For this money, I gotta go with used PRS or ebmm. Being close to Nashville, there's no shortage of places to shop.
Apples to oranges. All kiesels are custom one off guitars. Prs and Ernie make production models on an assembly. Unless you have deep pockets that is.
@@Dirge4july given the track record of Kiesel, I'll stick with PRS, EBMM, Collings, or Knaggs :)
I dont doubt kiesels quality at all i just strongly dislike jeff because he is very unbelievable and childish
He's a douche thats for sure
dezertson2011 there are plenty of other owners who would never do that in the first place, and he didn’t apologize or admit he was wrong about finishes until he was publicly shamed into doing so.
@@dezertson2011 he only apologized (half assedly) once people started to call him out for it, like they have the literally countless other times
Jeff Kiesel and one of their employees, Mike Jones, are absolutely ruining the public image of the company
@@dezertson2011 stop defending the dude, no reason to unless he's paying you to go around on Kiesel-related posts and defend him (which seems likely tbh, it's in his character to do so).
I've never heard of a SINGLE company other than Kiesel Guitars and Bravo Company (rifles) that actually ban customers from ordering, yet both have repeatedly done so for customers who either return products with blatant QC issues or broadcast their QC issues online. why should anyone support that, especially when there are a ton of better quality alternatives at the same price that do NOT have hacks of owners who don't know how to keep their mouths shut and not bash customers on social media?
People defend his actions, and state his apology fixed everything.
Let me share with you what a guitar builder did for me;
Bought a custom left handed S7G seven string at 2015 NAMM. When i went to get it set up, it could not be intonated, because of issues with the neck. I contacted Jim, S7G’s owner, who asked me to send the guitar to him, at His Cost.
A month went by, with no emails. Then two. I began to wonder what was up. I emailed him, and he told me my guitar was on the way back to me, issue resolved.
The guitar came back to me- a Brand New guitar. The note he put inside the case let me know how upset he was at the quality of the neck, so he built me a completely new guitar, with higher spec, and a beautiful finish- the one i bought was a natural finish.
That’s what a custom guitar builder should do. If they get an issue from the customer, they fix it, and if they cannot, they send you a new guitar with similar or better spec. When you pay thousands for a guitar, there is an expectation of getting your money’s worth.
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like a clean tone on a bridge pick up. That neck pup soundedAmazing
Tony Marinelli I’ve had two kiesels and Bridge pickups are always dark and muffled sounding and only sounds good with some gain. If split it the split sound is really really good clean to a little dirty.
With Ibanez and suhr you don't get the owner harrassing you on live streams for them screwing up your order, then block anyone that says they were wrong.
Hello! I used to live 20 minutes from Carvin / Kiesel. I love the Carvins I currently own a CT6 and C66
Seems a decent price, shame the guy is an absolute bellend.
How is he tho. Literally makes the best guitar for value on the market Gibson owners are worse
Du Riechst So Gut look up the roasted maple neck fiasco
@@NotechisMusic Maybe he read too many YT comments that day :)
Lespaul521 thanks for letting me know. I didn’t see that at all till now. I will admit he was very childish but hopefully he learned
@@Bedroomrips that is far from the first time he's screwed customers over like that.
that's a beautiful guitar. Not crazy about the headstock shape but I appreciate that it's not a shameless knock-off of another brand.
Does the the roasted neck being a standard feature mean you can at least return it if you get a stupidly light coloured one?
I would think so. The guitar is only made non-returnable if you specced it with an Option 50. E.g. Roasted flame or birdseye maple neck, special finishes etc. You can ask your sales representative to make a note on the type of roast that you want. I think it was indicated in a Kiesel video Jeff posted maybe a month back.
Did you get a bum neck brother? I don't like them. A stain brings the figure out better and differently depending on the stain. But roasted? I just don't like how they look.
Awesome 🎸. Own many Kiesel's. Best bang for buck and well made.
Those Berryliums sound good. Thanks for the demo.
No volume drop or loss of tone on the coil split. You can tell the difference between humbucker and single.
1:20 flame haple 😂
Great video phil! Love Kiesel, own a couple myself, more modern metal style though, not as vintage as this beautiful theos!
For years I have been wanting to do a custom order from Carvin / Kiesel, but which one??? There are so many that look so nice. Kid in a candy store always happens when I look at the site.
I'm watching this while wearing my Lefty know your gear T shirt. Just a coincidence. Really.
Nice review and a nice guitar, I think Kiesel are doing some very innovative things, very happy with my Kiesel Vader.
Hi Phillip, Any chance to open up that back plate and look at the pots and the electronics? I wonder if they still use the really cheap pots and switches. Thank you, your channel is great, and I like the podcast.
I had a terrible experience with Suhr, ended up returning the guitar that I waited a year and a half for and buy a Charvel GG :/ (I hope the Suhr fans don’t give me shit for this)
It’s got all the tones, nice looking too.
I've never played a suhr. I have played a Keisel. Or at least a Carvin. My Carvin SH550 is a phenomenal guitar. I have had it up for sale for a year but no offers I would deem acceptable. Perhaps they don't have any resale value but I would have thought the Carvin would be no trouble to sell and would have more value than a Keisel just because they are history now but still they are the same guitar. Aren't they? Anyway, apparently this is true.
Thanks Phil!! Now I want one!!
Just ordered a kiesel lefty DC back in February and can’t wait to play it. Also, is the humbuckers in your Theos lithium or beryllium? Really like the sound. I went with a Gambale/beryllium combo. Thanks for posting this honest review :)
How'd it turn out? Amazing I'm sure!
I have been thinking of buying a Kiesel but a little hesitant. This video has answered alot of questions I had. Thanks. Always informative.
I definitely would build it out onlline. Then print it then call them. Just my two cents
That’s a beautiful guitar Phil! Can’t wait for the other two make it in for a review. Kiesel proved this past year at NAMM that they do not mess around with their paint jobs. The ones that were covered were absolutely mesmerizing. I really like the way this finish turned out. Reminds me of a Ernie ball instrument. But this has a nice full body shape and a sharp looking headstock.
You look very at home with that axe! Cheers!
I need this guitar right now.
The G-string will always be a challenge if you do heavy dives (doesn't change pitch on upwards motion). The Wilkinson WLS-130 bridges can be solution, even only on the G-string, there is no way of getting around locking the string in some way. It is a matter of physics. FWIW
WOW! That is one super-nice guitar for any money... 'Sounds great! "Looks as though it plays great as well.
And the middle position is sweet.
I second the "call my guys" suggestion. As Jeff says, we make great guitars and our website sucks. Calling in the the best way to get what you want (or didn't know you wanted). It's also the place to ask questions and get immediate answers. I've ordered twice, great guitars, no surprises.
I hate calling. And I live in another country, so just the cost of the call would be prohibitive.
Just update your website? Its not hard and surely a medium sized company can just do it yourself or just use Wix or something like that.
This thing looks fantastic! I really love the way it sounds too.
I'm wondering what you think of Kiesel now? Now that you've got a good idea of what they are? Guitars, company, people ?
Nice sounding guitar and looks great too.
Very useful review. I put in my 1st Kiesel build at the beginning of December 2021. I think it’s gonna be sweet
Hey Phil, if you like the Stringjoys I just wanna drop a recommendation for their 11 sets (I use the 11-58 myself for Drop D). They really sing, especially the high strings, a lot more than I got out of their 10s, and I find them (and the 12s even) a lot more flexible to bends than same-size D'Addario or Dunlop (I used a mix of the two before switching to Stringjoy).
Phillip: "...even though they're made within a few hundred miles of each other's factory."
Why does that matter?
Didn't you that the air and water in the region make half of the quality of the guitar? Hahah, But one thing is true for flamenco and classical guitars is when the wood is dried in a certain region and the guitar is build in the same area it is acclimatized to that area. In Spain the say: A guitar from Malaga sounds best in Malaga and a guitar from Sevilla sounds best in Sevilla.
@@fbcaware8805 I guess part of it is due to the humidity and how the wood i dried. And the neck moves little bit if the guitar is produced in a humid climate and is brought to a very dry climate. With electric guitars you can adjust the neck and the body is solid, but if you look inside a classical guitar, there are many pieces of wood and if each of them moves a little bit, the construction of the guitar changes. It has less to do with what people prefer i guess.
That guitar is not $1900 today but still very worth it.
I love custom dyes/bursts with exotic veneers, which puts all these guitars out of my price range.
The guitar looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
Hard to separate the product from the man . Makes them less desirable in my opinion. Just can’t give a giant butthead any money
Love my Kiesel CT6, awesome guitars.
That is a great sounding guitar.
Your follow up videos are solid can’t wait to catch the comparisons of friends kiesels. I returned a kiesel this year because they got my order wrong
This reminds me of the RG7CT that Angel Vivaldi plays. Cool guitar, just ordered a headless Delos thanks to your review 👍🏻
Your playing is killer on this video man! Keep up the practice! The guitar sounds beautiful

That’s a great sound. Princetons are great. Just stick a dirt pedal in front of it and off you go. I use a Marshall in a Box and a Dumble in a Box, what a sound. That guitar sounds great.
That may be one of my favorite guitars you own. If you had to keep one, the AZ, the Suhr, or that, which one would it be you think?
Phil what is the orange bass in the background with the maple neck?? Looks cool
If you order a gotoh bridge do they recess a cavity in the body? Or keep the wood there like the Suhr moderns?
Regarding your brand of strings preference for the future, when I had my Kiesel built they allowed me to mail them my preferred strings and also set the guitar up in my preferred tuning (D standard)! Really cool 😎
That guitar’s a winner just on looks alone.
Was going to skip ALL my subscribe's but so wanted to hear that guitar's sound etc.....their suggestions to you where spot on,the brushed pup covers look subtle and the flame edging make your guitar look as good as it sounds.
A dream guitar at a fair price....your video demo sold it to me Phill.....👍
You should review my Kiesel Frank Gambale 1. It is a semi-hollowbody that cost $3,300 as configured, but good lord it's worth much more than the price. I swear you can't put it down.
Nice guitar and review! 🤘
Does Suhr sell direct? If not, there’s your price difference. The middle man makes all the money. Just ask Joe Manchin!
I’d love to see an in depth review of the Ae185 post Carvin. Haven’t seen any since Kiesel started.
Hi Phillip McKnight can this kiesels Guitar can Shipping overseas ?
crescendo33 They do for US$70. I have a Theos on order as well.
@@jameswong334 oh ok noted thank you on your reply.
I've never had a Kiesel but, I have had several Carvins. All really nice. btw. I was just wondering if they still use the mini pots and budget switches you might expect to find on a budget import model?
Missed seeing this Friday's Know your Gear episode. Technical difficulties?
Hey Phil...you said you will review your friends kiesels in future videos...are they coming?
I'm a fan of Carvin, uh, Kiesel. Fortunately, I don't care about roasted necks though I think the issue is that the import brands use a variety of maple with higher sugar content to reach that level of color. I suspect though they cheat with dye for mass consistency. Honestly, if you like a guitar held together with screws, buy parts from Warmoth. The quality is top notch with more options than even Kiesel. Why spend all that money on a guitar with a neck profile your hand hates? Warmoth has at least 10 neck profiles to choose from. $2700 for an Ibanez! Held together with screws! Mass factory bolt ons, are $500 guitars period. You can pay $2700 but you're playing a $500 guitar.
I love my Kiesel DC-600, but it seems to never rise above 2nd to my $900 Jackson Dinky and that fact irritates me. :(
Thank you for the review. Guitar looks great, sounds great, plays great, and made in the USA for a reasonable price. The guys at Kiesel have only taken great care of me and any worries about customer service are past history. Any chance in the future we would love to see a review of the CS6. Very "Les Paul" form, with some modern changes, The Beryllium pickups are supposed to be killer.
7:32 Maybe dumb question: Wouldn't it _not_ be the nut, if you're hearing it while playing bar chords? I wouldn't think the nut would really be a tonal variable if you're not playing any open strings. Bridge make most sense to me, since Warmoth did that video a while back comparing to identical necks with stainless vs nickle frets, and it turned out the stainless frets make almost no difference. Like they made a tiny tiny difference that you can barely hear in an A/B test, but you'd never notice it without comparing side by side.
Amazing guitar - would love you to get a Texas Toast guitar for review. Maybe one of there challengers, or a custom order
I planning on doing reviews of small builders. I just did the first one and it was great.
amazing sounding guitar ... hope to get one soon !!
I had a Carvin V220 Left Handed paid about $550 for it in 1985 I wish I still had it
Hey Phil what pickups were those I didn't hear you mention that in the video?
The copper strat is extra shiny today! I think she might be jealous!
Damn Phil, you always keep it so fair, i love it! Great idea to also review your buddies' guitars.
I can afford Kiesels at this time, but I have had 2 Carvins for a long time. Nothing better in my experience
Josh Krogstad Kissel is just rebranded carvin, corrects.

this guitar sounds great!
Your in the Kiesel family now Phil "One of us" ;). Just avoind the FB group and you shouldn't bump onto the Fanboys
Sounds perfect
Ok that's a 5 way switch which pickup is connected to the very middle position? I know 1 is bridge humbucker 2 is coil split bridge and 5 is humbucker neck and 4 is coil split neck so what is position 3?
For the past two weeks I’ve been thinking about ordering a Kiesel, but watching this video convinced me not to. Limited choice of options (only 2 types of Kiesel humbuckers, no Seymours, Dimarzios or Bare Knuckes to choose from, and only 1 Kiesel locking tuner). The Kiesel pickups are ok, but there are better to choose from. Just a very average product.
You can buy pickups and send them in $50 install.
Joe Brooks, I bought a PRS SE CUSTOM 24 35th Anniversary. It’s an amazing guitar with TCI pickups. I don’t think I would have got anything better from Kiesel, and I got it for less than $1,000.
Interesting company and guitar. You didn't reverse the head stock. Isn't there some tonal advantage with the E, A, & D strings with the increased length?
I almost did and then went safe. Lol
It looks like the new music man Sabre
Thanks phill, It's the guitar gimp Larry Mitchell bill and carla's friend Thanks I've been getting their catalogs for years seemed almost ti good to be true but I got to see some at namm and Johnny Hiland a hero of mine uses them after seeing your video I might order one will call like you said. And so true about strings don't like coated strings. I like the pure nickel on the wound strings probably because I grew up on Hendrix and Cream and my favorit player today Warren Haynes uses the nickel rockers
Nice nice guitar, Christmas in May. Thank for sharing. Enjoy your weekend
hey phil. we heard you say kiesel knew this guitar for you. does this mean you got it at a discount, or for free? this is a little ambiguous as whether or not its a paid advertisement or not
good choices in making of your guitar . do you think its a keeper ?
