    I love this video! Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial. Do the prongs sit flat enough to not catch on anything? Im worried they will catch and be pulled up.

      Thank you for watching and for the intelligent question. I'm trying to keep my videos at a reasonably length (I'm told I talk too much haha) so yes it's definitely a key part of making this design successfully to spend as much time as possible getting the correct curvature for your chosen cabochon. I'm using two pairs of pliers to generate the prong curve here and if you slow right down, take your time, you can match the curve of the prong to the rise and graduation of the cabochon you're using. The more time you spend working on this, the less time you'll have to faff around once you've set the cab in position. Thanks so much for watching

    To make my prongs equal distance, I finally had to cut a very narrow strip of paper and folded it into the desired number of pongs. I marked them with a pen and repeatedly referred to it to make my bends.

    Excellent video. Thank you. The large pliers you are using for folding the prongs are used to fold over cord ends without leaving marks. It is very easy to calculate the circumference of a round bead using the firmular: C= pi X dimeter. So, an 8 cm bead would be-3.14 X 8 = circumference 25.12 cm

    Beautiful! Thank you so much! Would this work for a [non-drilled] heart shaped cabochons - I have both faceted and un-faceted.... if not, any tutorial(s) that might? They're anywhere from 6mm to 25 mm gemstone and then Swarovski [faceted and with a front-to-back drill hole]....
    Aloha & MAHALO NUI LOA for EVERYTHING YOU DO!!💜🤙🤗💜
    Oh & P.S. - Would you make like 4 or 5 prongs or more/less would you think?

    • @JemHawkes
      @JemHawkes  7 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much for watching. I have used this exact technique for small heart shapes cabs; mine were around 11 or 12mm. Although I usually prefer an odd number of prongs, with a heart an even number works really well as you can set the two low central prongs just either side of the point. Probably 4 prongs for the 6mm and consider using 20g wire, but the larger ones, maybe 6 prongs. Have a lovely day, Mahalo xxx

    What silver wire would be good to work with, Is there a soft silver? I have a turquoise or malachite rectangular cab I want to do a basic one on. Also can a person flatten the bail so it sits flat with the cab.

    • @JemHawkes
      @JemHawkes  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there. I can't say I'm an expert with silver wire, but I have worked with hard silver and half hard, both of which were annoyingly springy and I didn't enjoy. Have a look for silver wire tempers in your location and see what's available. I would not recommend dead soft silver wire for a design like this as you'd want to tumble it after making to harden it up and neither turquoise, nor malachite would enjoy that. If you can find a medium or medium soft, I think that would probably work, but it is NOT my area of expertise. You can craft a bail with a flat back and more rounded front; any size and shape you want; as long as the ends of your chain fit through. Have a great day.

  • @annploetz8916
    @annploetz8916 6 месяцев назад +1

    I have a customer who has a cabochon with a little chip out of the flat side. She likes the idea of the prong setting. Do you think that is possible? I'm thinking not.

    • @JemHawkes
      @JemHawkes  6 месяцев назад

      There are a bunch of different prong setting ideas, you could try this modified prong setting technique on the chipped side, lining up the hearts to disguise the chip perhaps? Xxx
      ruclips.net/video/2HA2PU5kbnA/видео.htmlsi=EijEGFAjVxIwjtqe

    • @annploetz8916
      @annploetz8916 6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you. It is so small 8 x 10 x 5 I also don't want to cover it up much with a regular wire wrapping either. I actually don't think she is that concerned about the chip showing. I can put the chip at the top near the bail which I think she'd like a wire weave. I can also add some swirls possibly on the side to help cover it up too. She actually is a silversmith and couldn't set it herself because of the chip. I'll just practice with copper (she wants it with silver) to make sure I can do it first.@@JemHawkes

    One question Gem…could you use a ring mandrill to shape the prong circle?

    • @JemHawkes
      @JemHawkes  Год назад +2

      If your cab is round, yes, you can, but you'll need to warm the strip of prongs to enable it to form smoothly around the mandrel. When we make the prongs, we're hardening the metal, so it becomes a little tense. Try forming the cab frame both by plier movements, and by using your mandrel to see which you prefer xxx
