I don't know how anyone can even think that "Ninotchka" was not one of Garbo's best movies. (5:40) The writing, the humor, it was a solid script. Amazed at that guy's remark. It was one of her best, hands down.
This older man here. Peter Viertel. He was the son of Salka Viertel, Garbo's closest confident in Hollywood. He was a teenager when Garbo began hanging out at his house so he definitely had first hand accounts. His mother and Garbo remained lifelong friends. Peterwas a writer and married actress Deborah Kerr
GARBO! How much I am learning about this marvelous, actress! She. I believe had all her joyousness and liveliness worn out of her by Hollywood and movie people! She loved to laugh and have a good time, and I believe that she was devastated beyond words at how she was ultimately treated by those two. How very, very sad.
I'm not sure "Hollywood and movie people" have the power to take joy and happiness out of a person, unless you allow them to, I believe her own nature defeated her, unfortunately she kept everyone at an arms length, including those who loved her, and while Louis B. Mayer, has earned his reputation, as a world class "crud" Garbo has to assume credit, or blame for what happened, she did have family, she was close to,. I remember reading where she was holding, and smiling and playing with her grand nieces new baby, she remarked how "funny it would be, if the people who thought of her as "joyless could see me now!" so she was capable of great joy, when she allowed herself the luxury.
it was not really considered a suitable vehicle for Garbo; one critic went so far to say "about as shocking as seeing your mother drunk": some do like the movie, however
I disagree. You do not have enough faith in Garbo herself. She was a great actress. Not making the movie may have seemed the safer way to go, but the fact is George Schlee was her manager, he didn't know anything about making movies and he did not allow people near her. If he would have pushed her, she would have gotten that movie made. Garbo had to be told what to do. Lousy management was why she never made another movie. And she was still so beautiful.
The thing is, that, Jesus, just look at her, she didn't really need to act, she could just get by on that face and her charisma, alone, the fact that she was quite a good actress was almost a bonus, and she should have won the Oscar for "Camille"
Garbo was just an image created by Big Studio system a good friend was a huge fan but I personally liked the all American film stars of that era yes she was very good looking but her voice on the pictures she made never drew me in like the others who were discovered during her time. Plus, I liked the idea and dream you discovered at a soda shop, and worked your way up to the top of the silver screen star system.
In TwoFaced Woman they tried to turn Garbo into another Constance Bennett, neither she nor her fans though that was a good thing, Primary reason she quit films
She didn't choose to leave. With WWII she knew she was not marketable because her profits came from overseas. She chose to void her contract until after the war. After the war, it was a new era and new people at MGM who didn't know how to reinvent her. They made too much out of her first flop, Two Faced Woman. So did she, but she had never had a movie that flopped before. She was rich. Not having to work made a difference too, so she drifted through her remaining years, with some regrets.
Far no evolved in beauty so well, yet she didn't allow herself to fully bloom in Film or her own Beauty. She suffered "fears", and this speaks so loudly I'm uncertain how it was missed.
I feel so sorry for her.Anyone would be disincouraged to try to make another film after being practically snubbed by executives.Perhaps she felt as if they were right
It kind of makes you want to take your theoretical time machine, to make a quick stop, on your way back from killing Hitler, to slap around a few film producers!
I read in a book about her, that she really couldn't laugh, or at least give the great belly laugh that the scene called for, but she smiled winningly, and the dubbing worked great!
We cannot laugh to order , it has to come naturally . That scene with Melvyn Douglas was so forced and cringeworthy . Imagine being told by a director , now you have to laugh when this happens . Not going to happen , unless it's forced and fake .
windstorm1000 Beaton seemed to have asked her to marry him more than once according to his biography and diary, and got really pissed when she refused. I remember things like “although Beaton is basically homosexual, he wanted to marry Garbo” in the book . And the bearded friend of hers Sam Green was a art dealer, 35 years her junior, also homosexual. I recommend by Barry Paris and by Karen Swanson to whoever interested in Garbo. ^ ^

I agree. Who's to judge what is good or bad ? For me that was one of the best.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s her most accessible film and clearly it was a rousing success!
He's an idiot.

Salka was pretty much the only friend that never (in her eyes) betrayed her.
Thanks for including Peter Viertel, Diana McLellan and Karen Svenson, among the others, in this very interesting documentary on the Divine GG.
the face, the voice, beyond divine !
Garbo will always remain a legend. She chose to exit the film business at just the right time in her career.
Garbo is eternally fascinating--she was like a force of nature and one doesn't get bored with that--
That's why she was so Divine because she was not a show off... Love Garbo!
@S Mascodivine garbo she was a swedish beauty look at her face
@S Masco She was not transgendered. Androgynous, yes.
garbo & dietrich are the two most beautiful women ive ever seen...& the classiest legends ever
This candid pic was taken by her lover Mercedes de Acosta in 1932 during a six weeks holiday in Sierra Nevada :-)

Thanks for a very interesting video on greatest GRETA. I'll watch all the parts. Great job!
Kiitos
& i loove two faced woman...one of my fav garbo movie..
I loved Two-Faced Woman! Idk why it was panned by the critics.
it was not really considered a suitable vehicle for Garbo; one critic went so far to say "about as shocking as seeing your mother drunk": some do like the movie, however
I hate when people talk about same famous people as if they know all , even what she was thinking or feeling.
At 2:48 was strikingly very passionate scene and caught me that greta garbo was a truly dedicated actress like it was very natural to her.
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER
NO,,,,,,NEVER!!!!
OMG that bit at 2:48 is a rare footage you can't find in DVD!! her face cannot be seen at that point when he grabs her arms it was shot behind her
I loved this movie! My favorite of hers!

I liked "Ninotchka"! You might of had a point if you had said the same about "Two-Faced Woman". :)

S Masco foolish remark.
Does anyone have any info on a daughter of Louis B. Mayer named Nora, married Elmer Bernstein?
I don't believe a word Cecil Beaton has to say on the subject of Garbo. He had his own agenda, the ultimate Starfucker.
He was her lover, like I was her lover.
In your dreams, two times over.

13:22 Beautiful
Oh she was kinda of a you know what...the title of her last film might say it all
Brenton Wolf No. I don't know what you mean.
Aloha Greta
Greta Garbo, maravillosa.
Era una actriz comun y corriente, hubieron muchas mejores que ella.La gente dice maravillosa por costumbre .
Garbo couldn't laugh to save her neck.
I read in a book about her, that she really couldn't laugh, or at least give the great belly laugh that the scene called for, but she smiled winningly, and the dubbing worked great!

Harriet M loved those books!
Am I the only one who thinks she was overrated ?
that Ninotchka movie looks awful
It really isn't. It's actually quite sweet.
She was a weirdo.
Garbo, as most former, was a man!
Self absorbed! Cruel!!
She was just a fake!
Such BS. She didn't make a comeback because she saw the tests and looked too old.
