With a lot of the art people send you it's very obvious that they're afraid to commit to contrast and hard shadows. Daring to really darken those shadows makes such a huge difference!

I make the lighting part of the painting from the beginning- probably after I map out the proportion the second step is putting down the darkest shadows and the lightest areas (I usually tone my entire canvas a mid tone color that suits the picture) that way you are building the entire image with correct color and proportion

It's a term used a lot in 3d modeling as well, particularly "ambient occlusion" or AO for short. It's the shadows that are always there no matter where your light source is!

It's very basic fundamental about "shadow occlusion", you can move to learn about reflective light also. I think you can watch about that from sinix design channel or proko. I forgot about where I learn about shadow occlusion first time, but practicing on drawing sphere than immediately jump into object is helpful

    • @lirich0

A personal tipp when choosing reference: Studio portraits/pictures taken with strong flash often lack clear Shadows, which makes it harder to beginners to understand how to shade. Choose references accordingly, if you're just starting out!
