You had me spellbound, Kacey Hill:). What moved me is your authenticity, the very palpable tremor of deep emotion in your voice as you spoke from your heart. Without heart, the message would have been sterile. This is, as Emilia Lähti said in her Ted Talk, research made meaningful by starting with “me-search.” BTW I’m doing a little project on SISU (for a Finnish course), and that is what led me to this RUclips video. Thank you so much for deepening my understanding of SISU by adding your voice and personal experience to the collective pool

8:41 As a Finn I can confirm that this is how we answer to questions like: "How about you give up your independence?"
Sisu is combination of grit, perseverance, courage, stubbornness and endurance... and maybe 10 other things. It is actually extremely hard to put in words.
It is the machine gunner in WW2 killing man after another for independence even when he loves all people like his brother, it is the man making his field in almost permafrost to feed his family while his back is broken, it is the person who forgives people even though he has been disappointed every single time before that. Sisu is not giving up. No matter what!

Kacey, the SISU Project, and the concept of SISU in general are truly tremendous.

You refer to this project or sisu in general? because sisu is not something you can buy or have a slice in market... Whether you have it or not and unfotunately you can't make it in to a business. You can lecture it, make it known and describe it but you can not sell it

You are an amazing young woman. I love what you shared. Fantastic job! Tedx is lucky to have you on board. Sisu or not public speaking is difficult for everyone and you were graceful. Thank you for sharing. God bless and many successes to you.

Really good talk, except for one glaring mistake: Finland was never part of the Soviet Union. Finland gained its independence from Russia 5 years before the creation of the Soviet Union.

I still remember the first time I ever was exposed to the word SISU. It was in the early '70's and a girl in my high school had a t-shirt with SISU on it and I asked what it meant and she simply replied "guts".

Finland was NEVER a part of Soviet union. Finland was already an independent country, when Soviet union attacked it. Finland fighted back and retained it's independence and freedom.

Sisu is about whining and boasting. NO! The embodiment of Sisu is to tell everyone how well you handle your relationships and help the ones close to you (despite their short comings as they are part of yours). NO! You need to be better. That is Sisu. It has its pros and cons. Con being that you trust someone to be better than you. And don't fall into WW2. You weren't there neither were you a conscript (not that it matters). Sisu is love for something that is so strong that you forget yourself.

So sorry for this girl being somehow forced to make a case for others....Stick to talking about yourself ....its a better statement to the world.
