- The final #1 of the 60's was from the most popular and successful groups of the rock era and was also their final release with Diana Ross as she left for a solo career.
The story of the Supremes is fraught with emotional breaks and stratospheric accomplishments of three girls who just wanted to sing together. By the time of the release of "Someday", Florence Ballard was out and Cindy Birdsong had joined Mary Wilson and Diana Ross to round out the group.
The song was written by Jackie Beavers, Johnny Bristol and Harvey Fuqua for Jackie & Johnny who recorded it as a duo. It came about when Johnny realized that being on the road with Jackie was hard since both were married to other spouses and came out on Fuqua's Tri-Phi Label but sank without a trace. Johnny filed the song away with the idea it would be re-recorded at some point in the future.
That time arrived in 1969 when Johnny brought the song to Berry Gordy with the idea that Jackie & Johnny would try again, but the first thing out of Berry's mouth was "This is a smash for The Supremes" and that was the end of it.
Gordy and Bristol went into the studio with Diana and singing sisters Julia & Maxine Waters who covered the Supremes background vocals without Mary and Cindy effectively becoming Diana Ross's first solo single even though the song is credited to the legendary trio.
During the session, Johnny realized that Diana was getting tired and not putting the feeling he wanted into the song and sang the lyrics with her. The result was a rejuvenated Diana and Berry felt that Bristol's vocal added a dramatic edge and left on the final recording.
The real Supremes performed the song on January 14, 1970 at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas at 11:54 sang a six minute rendition that bade farewell to the old and welcomed the new. Jean Terrell was brought up on stage and was announced to be Diana's replacement, but the #1 hit streak was over. They did not reunite until 12 years later when Diana, Mary and Cindy appeared at the Motown 25th Anniversary show. There was some drama when Diana pushed Mary away from the microphone. You can read Mary's story about that here www.showbiz411...
The Temptations added the cherry ontop of this Masterpiece
A fan since their first recordings in 1964 . No better female group ever existed ! They were "SUPREME" ! Their Legacy will be around long after our generation is gone. We were so lucky to have them ! 💙💙💙💙⭐⭐⭐⭐👍👍👍👍
Discovered them in '67 (born in '61), love, love, love the Supremes - and Temptations forever!!

When my brother Johnny died I told him that one of this days we be together L U BRO GOD FORGIVE ME FOR I CAN BE WITH MY OWN
Elegance, beauty, and great voices. Part of my music as a young man! Love The Supremes! Rock On!
Brings me back to the 60s, dancing and dreaming in my tiny bedroom about life after leaving the nest!
Looking at the state of the world now I'm glad I'm old.
Looking back fifty-plus years, hopefully you realized those dreams.
Every teenage girl did!!😅❤️
The Supremes at their best. What can anyone say but simply the greatest girl group of the 1960's. Their music touches your soul in ways that are unfathomable. I was a young girl when I first heard this song. Nothing compares; it is just a song that speaks to you on a level that one can relate to. Some may talk about the arrangement or the instruments; but it's the music that pulls you in that I'll always remember.❤🧡💜💥🎶🎵📻
I absolutely love The Supremes!! There will never be another Diana Ross.......Motown at its best!!
When I think classic Supremes, it's Flo, Mary, and Diane singing Come See About Me. That Diana Ross and the Supremes stuff will never equal the magic those three beautiful girls/ladies from the Brewster Projects in Detroit created as one...In The Beginning...!
Was 12 years young when Someday hit that airwaves!! As fresh today as it was back in 1969! Been listening to Diana since 1965!! Thanx Berry Gordy Jr., for taking a chance on Flo, Mary (RIP), and Diana!! 👍👍👍
Along with the strings, I love those trademark Motown guitar riffs. Another great mix!!
I love the strings in it, too!! If you listen carefully with headphones, you can even hear a cello!!
@@stevepayne3745 Especially during the intro!
Pick ups with no crash symbol.
Diana Ross, the Waters sisters and Johnny Bristol created a classic that continues to mean to much to so many people!
Thanks for posting.:)
Lost my girl that I would be with someday after 38 years. Now I just wanna cry.

I LOVE 💘 THIS SONG 🎵IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER 🇹🇴🇹🇴🇼🇸🇼🇸🇼🇸🇨🇰🇨🇰
Yours is the only youtube version with a decent volume. My mother's favorite song.
I recall when this was just out that it saddened me because it was going to be the end of one of my favorite groups. It still has the same effect.
Yes, someday soon the world will be together dancing Jerusalema!
Thank you very much for sharing this great song en beautiful voices muchissimas gracias 🌼 🌺 🕊️
Many thanks and thanks again in behalf of my father who passed away in 2006. This song was part of his collection and just got me back in time like if I was with him.
RA: Better than the Frankie Knuckles mix which started well with the repeated strings at a higher tempo but lost me instantly with the “house piano” which really dates it to a specific period. This version is eternal in it’s melodic charm, uplifting vocals, & simplicity of original elements.
Excelente y muchas gracias por la música y los recuerdos!!!! (Keeping the fire burning)
Love this song 🎵 so beautiful 😍 💕
Yes their legacy will be around for a long, long time to come.
Fantastic thanks mate soul man stoke on trent ktf gazza

Love This
This is beautiful!!!
Fantastica versione vorrei ascoltare I LOVE'S CONCERTO THE SUPREMES
This is probably my favorite Supremes song of all time. However it saddened me to know that it was originally intended as a Diana Ross solo release as Mary Wilson (R.I.P.) and Cindy Birdsong did not provide the background vocals. Nonetheless it is a great song and I'm glad that they released it as a Diana Ross & The Supremes record.
I totally agree!
I didn't know Cindy and Mary didn't do the background vocals.
@@dorothyjones7751 yeah, the background vocals were done by a group known as the Andantes. They also sang back up on "Love Child". Although Wilson and Birdsong didn't sing on those two songs, they still get royalties off them.
Thanks for letting me know.
I agree.
Always love these beautiful ladies
Now I understand why you are soul perfection.
Ah Yes, this has long been a favorite of mine and you made it sooo much better. An extended version with your special touches just makes one all warm inside. Bravo on yet another brilliant classic brought to a new life, Kudos!

Beautiful version. Thank you!
I love this song since the first time I heard one of my all-time favorites by the Supremes yes the story is sad how wonderful woman of a group got pushed out by vanity Selfishness and greed so grateful for and other things I was so grateful for the movie that I made to showed all it but this song it brings back so many wonderful memories in my life and health time with simple and how we expressed how we felt in Songs and they were powerful words songs today will never be like this because children today artist today have don’t have this in them to put this kind of music out
I think this world would be much better a kinder to each other you play the Right songs for the right moment

Nice.
To those that don't know. The actual singers on this recording are; Diana Ross, The Water Sisters (Maxine & Julia), and Johnny Bristol.
Wow! Thanks for the info. I'm a big Supremes fan. I appreciate this!
Btw, didn't the Water Sisters sing background vocals on the 1979 Bad Girls album by Donna Summer?
The Water Sisters and Merry Clayton Singing Background
The epitome of wonderful times in a whole different world.
Love This song ❤️❤️
You have put this together, beautifully. First Class!
1969, was a unique time when changes occurred, with imminent frequencies. I vividly remember Diana Ross being in the process of leaving the Supremes. A very beautiful song, however, many of us knew that she was departing. She left in 1970.
Lovelove this wonderful tune .1 31 2022.

All I'm going to say about this song is that it says it all.

That was a time woman werr beautiful with actual talent and they didn’t need fake breasts nails and Botox nor twerking to look semi good ! The woman back then had natural beauty and fabulous vocals without this lousy RAP CRAP since the 1980’s ! Hell when will Rap just disappear for F**kin ever ? 🧐🧐🧐🤔🤔🤔🤨🤨🤨
