  • IMPORTANT CW: We cover some heavy subjects today, including racialized violence (Black Africans being thrown overboard to their deaths from a slaving vessel) and war violence (including a grim depiction of prisoners being blindfolded and executed). I have a warning slide before each of the aforementioned artworks. Please take care of yourselves: I understand that these images can be disturbing, especially if you haven't seen them before, and apologize if I sound dismissive. I'm still learning how to lead effective conversations about difficult subjects in the classroom, so any feedback you have would be immensely helpful!
Today's lecture includes the following works:
~ Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament)
~ Y no hay remedio (And there's nothing to be done)
~ La Grand Odalisque (The Grand Odalisque)
    ~ Liberty Leading the People
~ Slave Ship (Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying, Typhoon Coming On)
~ The Oxbow (View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm)

Graduated high school years ago and never did much art, I happened to visit the Metropolitan art museum in DC and was struck by Thomas Coles 4 stages of life painting. The plate said it’s from the romanticism movement so I looked into it and got here. Their approach to art makes intuitive sense to me, plus the idealization of the troubled artist

De Goya’s artwork doesn’t seem like romanticism representative at all
