(Update on) The Sand is Gone at Kua Bay, Big Island

  • We Just got back with checking on the sand at Kua Bay. It did come back some but has gone out again with the yesterday swell.

    I've seen it where the sand was so far down the rock with a tunnel was 15 feet high from where I was standing, and you could walk out 50 yards still only waist deep lol I was there for 8 years and went to kua all the time. You'll see this every few years during the winter....

    Come back in July and it will be a beautiful beach with calm waters. Come back in October and you will get knocked around. It is typical Hawaii winter. North shore Oahu now has huge waves. Go there in July and you can snorkel in many places it is so calm. This is normal Hawaii winter vs summer😊

    Is that natural sand, or imported sand?

      It actually blows all the way from the Africa Sahara desert every spring across the Atlantic Ocean and over the USA and then the trade winds finally blow it around the island to settle.
      Sometimes though if it's really bad the government will have barges come in with sand shipped from Australia. Hope this helps!
