  • When a dedicated employee earns praise for "A Job Well Done," it isn't always for the job he or she officially holds. Steve Hartman has a heartening example in a custodian at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas.

I wonder who are the true teachers here. The man with common sense and caring, or the people that put the letter of the law above the spirit of the law. Politics have long ago entered the school system. It is a sad state of affairs.

Fact: a custodian knows more about the happenings in a school than the administration knows! We see all, we hear all we know all! If we don't we will!
When one is in that role the whole school is yours. You have the opportunities to interact with the students on a different level than in classroom setting. You have the opportunity to build a bond and trust with these students and that my friends is a beautiful opportunity to show each they are worthy and to lead back on track with words of wisdom and insight when needed. It is opportunity to make a difference in ones life. To give a nudge at times with compassion letting you know life at any age is difficult but take that bull and stay on for the 8 seconds because you got this but should the bull buck you I'll be right there to be your rodeo clown!

You can have all the degrees in the world but they do not mean you can solve everyday problems, or have any common sense, or the ability to help others through their struggles and their dark times....I have helped a lot of kids over the years just by taking the time to listen to them and give them my experience, and what I'd do if I were in their shoes. Something most counselors today have no idea how to do...listen, they think because they are a counselor they know everything and in fact they really have no idea, they just read books and paid for a piece of paper at a college, that is no substitute for real life experience.

My old janitor at my school passed away last year from stomach cancer and I remember he always had his headphones in and would always sing and in the mornings he would ask us how we were doing that morning and he would talk to us and give us advice. His announcement of his death was told by our orchestra teacher because people had noticed that he wasn’t coming to school like he usually did, and it was never the same going to school. Rest in peace Mr. Anthony you are missed 🕊
