  • i asked the man when texas ended
he said if yer lucky it won’t
i said i gotta a gift i gotta get to fort smith
i was startin to lose all hope
the night was young when he pulled out a gun
the bullet jus missed my nose
i thought i was delivered when i crossed the big river
    i thought i knew, but i jus didn’t know
    refrain:
    i passed over the ozarks
    and onto the ouachitas
i skipped from poverty to poverty
    fenced in in arkansas, arkansas…
i saw the soybean fields and the flat bed trucks
and i watched the concrete creep
subdivided shoutin on a blackrock mountain
sayin this is how feels to be free
    i read the billboard scripture
    prophesying my damnation
reaching for his life, preachers on his third wife
out in branson on a big vacation
    refrain
    i saw a nuclear plant
    homegrown
and i know it ain’t fake cause they grew it in a lake
that they built jus to cool it’s bones
    they handed out alotta badges
    and made alotta energy
that they fired in a wire across state lines
while the state slurps up the fee
and there’s hardly a place that meth aint
    planted a dead white kiss
you can smell it in the air you can see it in a chair
itsa pretty damn hard to miss
i saw a law man shrug his whole body
    resign in an american god
said if they wanted to, they would help themselves
then he put away his bible and got out a gun
    refrain
if god lives up in the rockys
if that’s where the big man meddles
then a lesser being of a lower degree
musta come down here and settled
    i met revelators and archimandrites
    the big and the belittled
deep in my mind i reckon all in good time
we’re all agonna meet in the middle
    refrain
    Doxology:
i can’t tell ya where one thing ended and another
    did occur
it was new and it was old to me
it was more than i could observe
if what is seen is for the taking
and the taking can be seen
i’m gonna need your help with the calculations
i’m not sure what it all could mean
i passed over the ozarks and onto the ouachitas
i skipped from poverty to poverty
    fenced in in arkansas
    arkansas…

This is Americana. This is what needs to be said. Some don't want to hear it, but the way Jesse lays it out it'll stick in your head.

From Fort Smith- I feel like you’re singing what my eyes witness and watched growing up. So any Arkansans have identified with the ruling class- turning on their fellow working class, talking down on other workers- I’ve seen a lot of people forget where they came from (EBT card, HUD, trailer parks) because they make 30k - year for the first time in their life.
Meanwhile our governor taking her friend on plane rides and watching the Super Bowl while conservatives think free lunches are c0mmunism and 1/3 of the state is unsure where their next meal will come from.
The corruption happens in front of our eyes but people would rather stay silent than stir the pot.

I guess my point is if this was in the catalog of Dylan, lyrically it would not stick out like a sore thumb, save the fact that Dylan was a voice for a generation of future nimby collage kids out if touch with much of the country let alone the rest of the world.

@@Som3th1ngSom3th1ngblahblahblah That's a damn good take on Dylan and Boomers compared to young-ish people today.
Millennials and older Zoomers are almost the polar opposite of the Boomers. I loved your line; "future generation of NIMBY college kids". It's true though, as they were out of touch, and we are almost overly _in touch_ with the ills of the nation and the world at large because the internet has globalized us and feeds us so much info.

Jesse’s shit is so good that I find myself beginning and ending each day checking for the next song. It’s crazy how I feel like a better informed person after every song. I am starting to catch a habit though. I’m up to where one’ll do, but three or four is where it’s at. Thankfully he keeps bringing so much good gear, that I’m always able to save a wake up for the morning. Fuck it... I’ll just have to kick later, I guess.

Some off his songs are good but it's getting a bit same old same old for me.

I get it. But he’s obviously got a lot to say, and he’s getting it out. For me, almost every song has at least one verse that really resonates. He’s had me googling shit after a song. There’s not a huge variety of sound in these songs… my assumption is it’s more about him venting and expressing some frustration with the baffling divisive shit show that our society has become.

I definitely agree with your last point mate. I feel that an all out revolution is getting closer every day.

Phenomenal song Jesse. Come to New Jersey anytime if you wanna lay down one of these tracks all analog. We’ve got an old Studor 800 tape machine and a ton of amps in a nice lil live room with great classic mics. Could really capture your style perfectly.
Any time you need, you come on by, and I’ll fund it. Just gotta show up. 🍻🤘

Because of a few recent covers he's been posting I assumed this was too. 🙂 Really concise, no fluff, song writing down to the bone.
