  • Pair puzzling is a whole new ball game. Doing jigsaw puzzles together can be fun but also challenging - especially if you are going to compete in pair speed puzzling. Here are my tips on what I have learned and analyzed so far of pair puzzling.

    Some of my comments:
    1) Placement: It makes a huge difference if the picture is landscape or portrait. If portrait (which is the most common) I prefer to have the box propped up on one side of the table, have the image positioned "sideways" directly before the box and have all the pieces in one big pile on the other side of the table. So the two puzzlers (that are standing/sitting opposite of each other) both see the puzzle sideways. If they are collecting new pieces at the pile they can both - with a single glance to their right and left, respectively, look at the partly finished puzzle and the box and see these in the correct orientation. With positioning the puzzle "sideways" (not sure if that is understandable) the table space is used perfectly. The longer side of the puzzle goes from puzzler to puzzler and the shorter side of the puzzle is going away from the box, leaving more space for the flipped pile of pieces.
    2) Split the roles: Ideally one should know for each task an approximate relative difference of the two puzzlers. E.g., if a very strong puzzler is competing with a casual puzzler, he/she might be 20% faster with flipping, 30% faster with sorting, 25% faster with building colorful parts, 50% faster with single color parts, 40% faster with shape sorting, etc. If you knew these numbers, i.e. the strengths, one could split the roles very efficiently.
But in any case: If the faster puzzler starts with an easy part (Karen claims the strongest puzzler should do the edge), then there will be built the first section sooner and this will help both puzzlers because one can build off this part in different directions and add pieces there. So I fully agree with the faster puzzler taking easy starting pieces. But if there are really, really hard sections (the big tree in "Cat Forest), it might well be a waste of working power to let the weaker puzzler work on this section - all depends on the relative strengths which are hard to determine.

Thank you wo much for your input!
      1. What a great explanation. Totally understandable. I personally don’t like the sideways style, I makes me pretty much useless because I haven’t (yet) practised watching puzzle image from any other direction. I believe this a good option for pairs to try out as you can find what works the best for you only by trying different things.
      2. You hit home with those percentages. I orinigally did film with explaining all those on paper but it got so complex that I edited out from the final video. There are just so many factors and differences between pairs and individuals as well. Also for example, the faster puzzler might able to keep up the flow and highest possible speed when the move forward from easier to harder areas. But if they would do something harder first and then do easier area, they may get stuck to that speed they had on the hard area. This, and hundreads of other factors are so hard to explain in written and even in a video. I have analyze hours and hours of videos to come up with some statistical ”average” conclusions to have some thumb rules to give people.

Exactly. Pair puzzling is so much fun (even literally just for fun).
For pair speed puzzling you can be oil and water together even if you are the best individuals. But practice makes it perfect.
      Thank you!

Thank you so much! I know speed puzzling and pair puzzling isn’t for larger audience so obviously this won’t be watched by many but I hope it will still somehow reach the right puzzlers who are into pair puzzling! 😊😊😊

21:57 My partner and I always make it really clear when one of us starts putting floating/non-attached pieces (roughly) where they belong in the building area by saying: 'any pieces in the middle from now on are where they belong, do not move them'. That rule of communication has really helped us. He had a habit of clearing out any floating pieces he saw. Then when I came back to attach something to it, it would be gone. 😅
Also, for some reason, when we puzzle together we get faster than we ever are individually. I think we both race to get the areas of the image we like better, which makes us both go faster to stop the other one getting there first. Haha.

PS: When my team at WJPC had to shape sort, I had to be the piece police and tell everyone over and over to put the shapes back where they belong and don't mix them up. 😆
PS2: This is SJ! Just realised my name doesn't show in comments. 🤪

Haha yeah! ”Anonymous user” 🤣 I definitely agree with that. I also say that out loud. As you do team puzzling with Emilia K. I’m sure you struggle with the same things we do as a pair. She is super good seeing where a piece goes but not by shape so I need to make sure if I need shape sorting to help myself that it needs to stay in order. We did so much better with this when we practiced on Friday and also in the Finnish Championship. Then on the other hand I may talk sometimes too much that it’s almost bothering others. 🤣 I have seen some other pairs too being faster together. I think me and Emilia are more individually fast and still working on puzzling together effectively!

For who does the shape sorting, I would say it also depends on the moment. Fx my pairs partner is generally faster than me, but one time I was joining her on the last batch of forest, as she was getting burned out on it. I had fresh eyes and energy to tackle it, so she did the shape sorting, while I kept puzzling.
It's also worth noting that being fast at putting pieces together and being fast at sorting don't necessarily align, and it's worth thinking about them as separate skills.

    • @puzzlewithemilia
      @puzzlewithemilia  Месяц назад +1

Yeah. Those are definitely separate skills. The main point was ofc that if only one person is working on the puzzle (while the other one sorts) it should be the faster one. Especially when shape sorting happens near by the finish. It doesn’t really matter if the slower or faster sorter is sorting as the task of finishing the puzzle is priority and this should be done by the faster one. But as you said, there are so many different scenarios and other factors can come to play. There will never be just one approach that would work for all and in every situation. That’s why communication is so important. And planning is everything but plans are nothing - you always need to be prepared to modify your plans accordingly. It’s like driving a car… you cannot just steer your wheel once to drive straight because your car won’t go straight for long if you don’t keep adjusting.

All very useful and interesting information for those who do pairs. As I as totally solo none of it would apply for me. Ah me, the subtitles were all over the place. A few examples:- parab buzzling, building the bottle, with the perling and shape short. I can only assume that the subtitles person or whoever was having an off day. ☹ Look forward to your next video.

Thank you! The subtitles are not done by a person. Those are always automatic and the automatic system catches words incorrectly. I usually re-write them myself for the whole video but it takes at least 2-3 hours so I haven’t had time to fix them yet. 😅
