I have been using what I call "stabilizer frames" since I purchased my embroidery machine. I have one for each hoop. I use them for most projects. I do not use them for FSL or lace). I made the frame from 2 layers of heavy pellon interfacing (like for making collars and cuff on clothing). The center hole I made by stitching out a basting frame the size of the max stitching area of my hoop plus 1/2". It can be used for any project. I simply use a square of stablizer 1" larger than stitch area pinned with satin pins to the stabilzer frame. I have been reusing the frames for 5 years now. Like you said, it really saves on stabilizer. And the interfacing is always taught and always centered in the frame.
ohhh, I like the idea of doubling up with the heavy pellon and creating a window that would accommodate everything! How smart. Thank you so much for passing along the information, I appreciate that so much!
Hi, this is Lin from South Wales in the UK. Thanks for the suggestions, I’d never used glue because I didn’t want to gum up my needles but putting it outside the outline is genius. Thank you so much for that tip. My suggestion is to buy a large tape dispenser that fits your roll of masking tape. A one off purchase. It is then easy to tear off pieces with one hand. Thanks again, Lin
Thank you Lisa for this economical tip. I used it last night to create a window while embroidering towels. It feels so much better not to be so extravagant with the stabilizer, and it worked great!
Wow just ran across this video. It will really help me on quilts that repeat the applique. Thank you for posting Lisa. Glad I'm reviewing old videos!💛👏
Thank you so very much for this video. I've had my embroidery machine for over 13 years and still struggle with stabilization and wasting stabilizer. This method works like a charm. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and talents with our quilty community.
Now that I finally have my new embroidery machine, I revisited this video and you again have given me more knowledge and I will be using the window technique on my projects to save time & money.
This window concept is fabulous! I have done about 5 of the same pattern for valentines recently! Wish I’d found this tutorial last week! I’m going to go try it now! Thanks so much!
I have seen this done, and did it myself a few times, with a piece of plastic. The flexible plastic is hooped, and it has a window in it. You then add sticky stabilizer to the window, and stick the fabric down to it. I think it was just called stabilizer window. It works well. TY for a great video. I am always looking for new tips for my embroidery, and I love watching others and how they do it!
Once again, you have changed my life. I have a ufo that has been sitting in my office for almost a year. Been avoiding all the embroidery that is necessary to finish this quilt. Prior to watching this video, I considered it to be too much work and money to finish. I now know differently because of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've missed you a lot.
aweee, this makes me happier then you'll ever know!! I'm so glad you are inspired to finish your ufo......and all of the work you've already invested into that quilt :) Keep me updated, I'd love to hear how it turns out!
I'm so glad I could pass along the money saving tips! Wish I could take credit for inventing this hehehe......but nope. I saw it while doing a Google search for ways to save money using stabilizer hahahaa. It worked perfectly so I've been doing it ever since. I'm like you....don't like to waste much in products...time or money :)
I learned to use a stabilizer window last year but I use a nylon reinforced plastic that is used in construction. I love this method. Thank you so much for sharing since it will save people a lot of money and time.
I tried this this week. It’s AWESOME! What a time saver and stabilizer saver ! So glad you made this video!!! Makes appliqué so much easier and enjoyable! Thank you!
What a time/stabilizer saver! I was told by my Bernina guru that the larger the hoop the trickier it can be to keep the stabilizer taught. I have a Bernina 770 QEE and your videos are so very helpful as I try to master embroidery.
I did try this today! I used this method for 4 inch fleece cats made in the hoop. I used this 2 times and now have the window to use this a few more time. Thank you Lisa Capen Quilt!
Excellent instructions! Your videos are absolutely awesome, a wealth of information for anyone new or reference for us oldies too! I enjoy watching even your older ones. I love window hooping, saves so much time. If one isn’t concerned about wasting a little stabilizer, you do not have to be limited to using the same design. I like to cut a square in my hooped stabilizer leaving enough border to glue my next piece of stabilizer to the back. I’m not as concerned with saving stabilizer, fast ‘n easy hooping is my goal. In actuality a little stabilizer is saved by not having to replace a fully hooped stabilizer each time. Plus I keep 3 different sized hoops ready to go at any time.
Amazing video!!! Thank you so much! I’m a embroidery beginner, I always listened people saying to use stick spray, here was the first time I saw about the glue for this, amazing! 🤗 but, my question, the glue can damage your machine or the fabric ? Can I use the glue with T-shirt fabric? xxx
This is awesome!!!!! I have a D1 Viking and have quit embroidering for over a year, just because of the expense. Thanks so much, I will get my arm back on and give this method a go.
Thank you! I can see I will be doing a lot more embroidery and making fewer trips to buy stabilizers. I always thought that using a full hoop of stabilizer was way too extravagant for seemingly small projects.
Thank you Lisa for your great tip on the stabilizer window. I agree about the cost of stabilizer. To utilize the remaining hooped stabilizer and adding a smaller piece is genius! I usually recycle my leftover stabilizer when doing decorative stitches when embellishing clothing, quilts or craft projects. I will definitely give this tip a try! Thank you for your videos!
I just got my embroidery machine. The worst part for me is the hooping. This method looks great. Can't wait to try it. Not sure when you first stitch out the design are you using sewing or quilting option. My machine is a Bernina 790.
Hi, just watched your video and thank God I found you, I will do exactly what you do, thank you so much, thus will make embroidery easier and Save lots of money
I continue to refer to this video and send people here when I can't "explain it" as well as you do. I have saved SO much stabilizer this year, making masks in the hoop. Thanks
Ingenious! What a wonderful tip!! I had to giggle when I saw you pin your work. I do that all the time when I "float" my work. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Thank you for this fabulous tip!! As a quilter, I am SURE I will be using it!!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I also do memory quilts and Teddy Bears. I embroider the bottoms of the bears feet for my clients and this method will save me a lot of stabilizer and time! Although each bear foot is different, the size of the foot is always the same, this technique (without the applique process) will work perfectly . I'll be busy getting back on this previously daunting task tonight due to your helpful tips!
oh how I wish I had seen this before doing the curtains I just made for our camper! I used the same embroidery panel for each curtain panel! thanks for this!
I am just learning to use a Bernina Artista 730 Embroidery machine I purchased used. This was very helpful. Little by little I am starting to understand and the love to know how to save on my stabilizer, Thanks for the great video!
So I'm super new to quilting, mainly learning clothing sewing. I watch the whole video trying to figure out how you were going to make that work! Thanks for the how to. One day I'll get to try it!
This is a great tip! My hoop size is just 4x4 so I likely won't get to use it myself. One thing though. I kept hearing your bird in the background trying to socialize and thought my hubby forgot to put our parrot in her sleeping cage! Then I realized it wasn't our girl at all! What kind of bird do you have? We have a 20 year old female Solomon Island Eclectus we have had since she was 3 months old.
That is amazing. I have been so reticent to dive into the embroidery because of the crazy cost of the stabilizers, not to mention the irritation of hooping and rebooting. This tip will be amazingly helpful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'm brand new to embroidery. Just got my machine and wanted to put initials on the corners of dinner napkins I made. Was trying to come up with a way to save on stabilizer. This should work. I'll definitely use this method.
NICE!!!!!! This is an excellent trick to save stabilizer!!!!! I am going to use it for my 3-D Free Standing Lace Embroidery projects!!!! Thanks for your time and excellent video!!!!!
This is great! I saw a similar method years ago where you use a plastic fabric and cut a window in it, and just place a new piece of sticky stabilizer in the window each time. But the glue stick works great! There are some little magnets called Sew Tites, that you can put around the edges instead of pins, as long as they are out of the stitching zone. They are handy.
Oh yes this awesome...I started doing the window on wss and have been using the window n everything..thanx for sharing your video...now Im off to watch another of your vids...:)
Have missed you. Don't know how you do all you do. Love the nautical anchor quilt. You inspire me to get busy. I have to say that I did block 1 of the mystery quilt very quickly but the stalled at block 2. Thanks for the pep talk. happy sewing, with all of the projects you have.
I completely understand the stall.....I have 3 quilts that I started and have "stalled" along the way hahaha. Not because I don't want to finish them...I really do. Life just seams to point me in other directions. I look forward to getting back to them :)
Lisa, I am getting ready to start my hoop embroidering and it is a little intimidating. This is wonderful and it will save lots of money and I think it will definitely save time also. You always have such great ideas, thank you so much for sharing with us. My machine does not do large embroidery so that is a bit of a letdown. When I purchased my machine I did not even realize there was a difference. I do have a larger hoop but someone told me my machine will only do a 4.5 by 5 I believe no matter what. So, I will start small and learn then go on to a better machine. So, glad you are back with us.
Did your machine come with the larger hoop that you have? I'm glad that this video shared some tips that were useful and I'm happy to pass along the info!
It came with the smaller frame but I was able to order two other sizes that said they worked with my machine, but I was told by someone at a quilt shop that my machine will only do the smaller embroideries. They said my machine can only read or handle the small patterns. I was really bummed because I had already purchased many patterns a lot of them bigger than the 4x5s. Hopefully, I will be able to buy a bigger machine that can do multiple pattern sizes. When I purchased my machine I did not even realize all machines could not do all pattern sizes, shows you how much of a novice I am.
I feel like you! My brother se400 only does 4/5 I think. So I too can only get smaller design. I did get the bigger hoop and I just move it around to adjust my letters or whatever I'm doing. Like I was able to apply four little stockings instead of two on the 4 " hoop but I don't have a software to go with mine.
Aloha from the Big Island Lisa! This is a brilliant technique and I am SO happy you took the time to share it with us. You are an excellent teacher and I appreciate your time and effort on the behalf of all of your visitors and subscribers. This is my first visit and can’t tell you how glad you popped up on my feed. Blessings and joy, Jan (now subscribed)
thank you so much for watching and subscribing Jan! I appreciate that so much :)I'm so glad the tips I shared in this video were helpful, I look forward to making more videos similar to this when the busy season is over.
Thank you Lisa. What a wonderful easy technique you came up with. I, too, was wasting so much stabilizers using the large hoop. Thank you so much from San Antonio, TX 💖💕
Thank you! I have used the window before to make lace ornaments but only with basting stitches. I am looking forward to trying glue to get more hooping out of each window.
Hi Carol! I hope you enjoy this technique......I can't wait to have some free time, as I've been wanting to try making some free standing lace for my journals!!
Wow what a great video! I am brand new to embroidery and just attended a weekend beginner class a couple of weeks ago. I was gifted an older 4 x 4 Sofia baby lock machine, watched a ton of videos, and got hooked! I just bought this same Bernina B700 machine! Can't wait to start on all these amazing projects... and put this great tip to use! I will be sure to subscribe and follow you! I'm hoping to find a way to embroider monograms on a pleather tote bag, and would appreciate any advice you might have to offer. So glad I found you again what a great video!
I am sure you are going to love your new machine!! Mine is a bit testy from time to time.....I seem to get the little error about the top thread has run out....A LOT....and that can be frustrating hahahaa. Other then that....I love it!! I have not yet tried embroidering on pleather...so I'd be interested in hearing how it turns out!
Thank-you Lisa this is amazing. This will save a lot of money and time. My embroidery machine is still in it's box but in a few weeks it will be out and so will I. I can't wait.
I know you must be super excited to start your new journey with your embroidery machine! Glad I could pass along the tips to help save you TIME and MONEY :)
Thank you for your helpful tips. I like the glue stick idea better than stitching a new piece of stabilizer that covers the “window”. Your tips are helpful.
Hi Lisa I am in the process of organizing my sewing room and I am wondering what you have in the black organization cabinet behind you and how you have it organized?
Thank you so much I’ve learned some great from you today I did not know that you could do that with embroidery machine. I have always anchored down the fabric and slipped the tear away under. I like you method better. Thank you
Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise! I've done stabilizer windows, but never thought of using masking tape around the exterior of the hoop to keep the stabilizer taut... great idea! (I've used pins and binder clips, but your way is MUCH faster!)
Thank you. I love how you teach. I am an embroidery novice so my question may seem elementary. I assume that your anchor is part of a design that you purchased and that it is for applique.
This is brilliant! I use water soluble stabiliser a lot. Do you think this method would work with that? I know I'd have to be quick with the glue stick otherwise the stabiliser would start to dissolve.
Lisa, I hope you get this message, don't know if YT sends you notes from an 11 mo video. Anyway ... I had watched this video when it came out and apparently it was lodged in my brain until today when I needed it! I was able to easily use this technique for 6 repetitive/identical hoopings/stitchouts! OMG, what a game changer!!!! I had always shied away from multiple/identicals because of, well, repetition. And all that stabilizer going to waste. This technique was so quick and easy! TY TY TY. Hope this finds you and your family well. Take care ((hugs)).
I do get notifications from older videos and I'm so glad because I appreciate your feedback sooo much!! You are so right, it is a total game changer...time saver and money saver!! Thank you so much for the well wished, I appreciate that so much
I'm hoping this method will save you some $$$$ with your stabilizer! I've been learning how to digitize for a little while now...so much to learn...never enough time, but I'm making progress :) Thanks for watching!
OML University has some wonderful videos (you tube) on learning to digitize with several different brands of digitizing software and on their FB page lots of information and help.
Hi Carolina, thanks for watching! I thought the heavy duty stabilizer would be more sturdy and last longer if I made the window out of that, and I used the light weight stabilizer on my project because that's really all this quilt block needed in order to stabilize the fabric for the satin stitch :)
Great to see you again! I LIKE this method! Never thought about using a glue stick. So much less messy and expensive than spray adhesive that shop classes teach you to use. I have seen the window method and have used it on occasion. Same process just a little different than yours . You are so smart. Thank you for sharing.
Oh my goodness....the spray adhesive is so expensive! Plus.....no matter which brand I used...they seamed to clog and I'd never be able to use all of the product. Not to mention the smell and huge mess it made with the overspray on the hoop and every where else. So yep...now I use the glue stick when ever possible :)
Hi, I am a retired pro embroiderer...my machine is a commercial 15 needle but Ms. Capen has done such a great thing by telling peeps with home machines how to save 💰. I wonder if the commercial sticky back paper I buy would work for you. I use it with my fast frames.(not needed to use it, just sharing)... Mind you it works great and has for yrs for me, and last a LONG time, especially now as I don't need much of it and you can strip it and save evrn more $$$.and good for many hoopings as what Ms.Capen promotes.
I think this is so nice. Thank you for the tutorial. I have wasted a lot of stabilizer over the years. I wonder how this works when you don’t have the anchor(design) printed out to trace. Maybe just hooping for different size designs..would it work?
Love this idea and your voice and laugh is so soothing!! When you do an appliqué, do you always cut it down to the exact size? I always place it and trim it after the placement stitch. Your idea seems so much better. Can you explain a little more about the appliqué?
thank you so much DeeDee :) Nope, I don't ALWAYS do it like this, sometimes like you I do the placement stitch and trim before continuing on. In some cases that is way faster! Because I am stitching out 84 of these anchors between 7 quilts, I went ahead and made a svg file for my Brother ScanNCut machine. It cuts them PERFECTLY and it only takes 2 minutes to cut out 2 anchors. Imagine the time it would take to carefully remove the extra fabric for 84 of them hehehee. If I'm doing a single applique here and there I do it the other way :)
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I cut out my shapes with an Accuquilt Go. Then I get the emb. file, and stitch them down. I am also experimenting with taking a picture, scanning it with a wand scanner, importing it into my Cricut as and SVG file, and cutting it out. I do not have a Scan N Cut, but that sounds like a great idea!!!!
Wow! Thank you thank you thank you! I have been trying to create the same process but you beat me to perfecting it! I tried using Sharon schamber technique but it is really complicated. I love your system and will be using it every time I embroider. I can't thank you enough for the time and money you will be saving me!
Thank you so much! You explain things so well that i can even understand. lol I do have a question that pertains to Bernina. I have 3 different Bernina Sewing Machines and the (old style) Bernina longarm. Unfortunately, the Bernina Dealer I bought them from was not very helpful in the "free classes" I was suppose to get to learn how to use all of them. I live in a very small town and there is no other Bernina Dealer. Do you know of any kind of Bernina RUclips Video's that are helpful in learning how to properly use them. I have a 580, an (I think) the 820 both embroidery machines and then another one that is for the "old style" long arm. The only one I know how to use is the 580. LOL Any kind of help you can steer me to would be so very much appreciated. Thank you
Hi Tori! I'm so glad this video was helpful for you :) I'm going to be 100% honest with you........I am in the same boat when it comes to my Bernina embroidery machine. I purchased it at a quilt show from the dealer and was told it comes with free classes so I was pretty confident in my purchase. Later I find out the class teaches you how to turn on machine, thread and simple things like that. Bernina has several videos here on RUclips however I found them very vague and still had many questions after watching. What I know about my embroidery machine is all through self discovery hahaha......I recommend checking Facebook for specific groups for each of your machines, they are probably out there :) I'm sure you'll find some people in those groups who can really help a lot!
How smart. Thank you so much for passing along the information, I appreciate that so much!

what.
Thank you so much Lylian, I'm really glad these tips were useful!
Thank you Lisa. What a wonderful easy technique you came up with. I, too, was wasting so much stabilizers using the large hoop. Thank you so much from San Antonio, TX 💖💕
My pleasure! I'm glad I could pass along the tips :)
Thank you Lisa! I love this and will be using this tip on my next project.
Really great and useful. Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow and I love your patient attitude. Thanks a lots.
thank you so much Emma!
Thank you! I have used the window before to make lace ornaments but only with basting stitches. I am looking forward to trying glue to get more hooping out of each window.
Hi Carol! I hope you enjoy this technique......I can't wait to have some free time, as I've been wanting to try making some free standing lace for my journals!!
Wow! This is great Lisa ! Thank you so much!! I appreciate you sharing this tip. I am new to embroidery and appreciate your knowledge.
Very helpful video to watch as I am a beginner embroiderer and I am sure will be using this tip. Thank you.
I'm so glad I could pass along the information! I hope these tips help out :)

You are amazing....this is the best embroidery machine appliqué tutorials that I have watched...keep these tutorials coming..Thank You!
thank you so much Kathy for the awesome feedback, I appreciate you so much!
What a wonderful idea it definitely saves money on stabilizer and the constant rehooping!! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
WOW! Thank you! I Love your window idea❣
My sewing world just exploded into new area's 😊
That is so awesome to hear Stacy! I'm glad I could pass along the tip :)
Fantastic thank you. I’ve seen this explanation but never quite understood the steps. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial.
I'm so glad I could pass along the tips, thanks for watching Candy!
Thank you for your helpful tips. I like the glue stick idea better than stitching a new piece of stabilizer that covers the “window”.
Your tips are helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Lisa, I do this too, but I use painters tape or basting spray to secure the smaller stabilizer onto my windowed hooped stabilizer.
I like using the painter's tape too, it's so helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Just found your site. I had heard about the window could not visualize. Thanks for this demo. Can’t wait to try it.
Hi Judie, so glad I could pass along the tip! Thanks for watching :)
This is brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing this technique!!
You are so welcome!
Hi Lisa I am in the process of organizing my sewing room and I am wondering what you have in the black organization cabinet behind you and how you have it organized?
Hi Rosemary, thanks for watching! I have buttons, beads, and at the time this was filmed I had all of my presser feet in the drawers as well :)
Thank you so much I’ve learned some great from you today I did not know that you could do that with embroidery machine. I have always anchored down the fabric and slipped the tear away under. I like you method better. Thank you
I'm so glad I could pass along the tip Gina, thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed!!! I have just ordered a790 Bernina embroidery machine. So excited to try this out. Thanks
oh I know you must be excited!!!! The 790 is the same body as mine but does sewing AND embroidery right?
Yes, can't wait! Look forward to watching more of your videos.
Brilliant . Also, explained concisely. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome !! I tried this before I saw how you do it and only made a mess. You have done a great job explaining this project !!
thank you so much Mary! Glad I could pass along the tips :)
A very informative tute. Your directions were so easy to understand
Thx
Thanks so much Vicki!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise! I've done stabilizer windows, but never thought of using masking tape around the exterior of the hoop to keep the stabilizer taut... great idea! (I've used pins and binder clips, but your way is MUCH faster!)
glad I could pass along the tip! I'm always looking for ideas to make my life easier hahaaa!!
Thank you. I love how you teach. I am an embroidery novice so my question may seem elementary. I assume that your anchor is part of a design that you purchased and that it is for applique.
Hi Carol :) The anchor is a design I created in an embroidery software called Embrilliance.
This is brilliant! I use water soluble stabiliser a lot. Do you think this method would work with that? I know I'd have to be quick with the glue stick otherwise the stabiliser would start to dissolve.
I'm not sure Maggie, I've never tried it with water soluble before so I can't say with certainty
This is such a great time saver! Thank you Lisa!
thank you Lisa, and love your NASA tshirt. Needing one like that for granddaughter who loves anything Nasa
hahaha, thank you! My hubby works at NASA :) He saw the purple shirt .... purple being my favorite color.....and he picked it up for me.
Thank you so much for the well wished, I appreciate that so much
I JUST got my EMB machine and having trouble HOOping...I will try this method..TY, Sheila
thanks for watching Myron!
This is a great idea. I do something similar, but, like your way better! Now to get stitching!
Thanks so much Carole!
This is amazing! Can't wait to try it. Thanks!!
Wow, great idea. Saves time not rehooping. Saves cost of stabilizer.
What a brilliant idea. Thanks so much for sharing.
Some one has told you before but an old trick for hand embroidery we use tape around the inner hoop to snug space when using stablelizer
OMG, thank you so much for sharing, I have a load of school uniform embroidery to do, this will save me an absolute fortune on stabilizer.
I'm so glad this video will be helpful, it certainly will save you a ton of money when doing a large project like yours :)
Personally I like your term “stabilizer window”. I appreciate your helpful tips
Thanks Susie! and thanks for watching my video :)

That’s a fantastic idea! Thanks for taking the time to share your trick.
you are so welcome, glad I could share!
Wow! Thank You so much! I just got my first embroidery machine and I haven’t tried yet! This video was so helpful!
Hi Debbie, that is so exciting!!! Glad I could pass along the tip :)
Loved your demo! I have done something similar with hooping but never thought of using tape to hold the heavy duty stabilizer down. Thank you!😀🌹🌹
You are so welcome, I'm glad I could pass along the tips, thanks for watching!
I am definitely going to try this technique. I am a digitizer and use tons of stabilizer just testing my designs.
Love this technique... why you heavy weight stabilizer first and light weight for the window ones? Thanks!
Hi Carolina, thanks for watching! I thought the heavy duty stabilizer would be more sturdy and last longer if I made the window out of that, and I used the light weight stabilizer on my project because that's really all this quilt block needed in order to stabilize the fabric for the satin stitch :)
How did you get your embroidery design to match your applique design so that it stitched the edges perfectly
Like it Lisa, I got a question ? Do you have any good embroidery machine for sale?
This is just super! Thank you so much for sharing. This will be great for my embroidered quilt blocks. 💖
I was thinking the same thing. 😂
Greatly appreciate the tips in this video. Thank you very much.
Geez! im still pretty new to embroidery, but I figured out how to do this in my 4×4" hoop using school glue & a mini iron. Big money & time saver.
I use school glue in my quilting all the time, I LOVE IT :)
Maybe just hooping for different size designs..would it work?
it would definitely work! Just make yourself a "generic" window shape, one that accommodates each of your designs.
Thank you so much! I've been embroidering for years but your reminded me of things I had forgotten.
Thanks for watching Dorothy!!
Wow really you save money, that glue is incredible !!!! Thank you so so much.
Eliza Cas
Lisa Capen Quilts I have a Cricutmaker! I’ve never even used the fabric part!! Silly me!! Will be watching for more tips!
First time I watched your videos. great tip on time and money saving. Thanks for sharing
thanks for watching Aneesa, glad the tips were helpful!
Wow! Thank you thank you thank you! I have been trying to create the same process but you beat me to perfecting it! I tried using Sharon schamber technique but it is really complicated. I love your system and will be using it every time I embroider. I can't thank you enough for the time and money you will be saving me!
it was my pleasure to pass along the tips and share this process :) thank you for watching!
Hi Lisa, Thank you for this tutorial, and yes I agree it is a great process and will be trying it myself. Cheers from Australia
Hello in Australia! Thanks for watching my video :)
