    Probably been 20 years since I first saw this film, and I still consider it to be one of the most atmospheric, unnerving, and genuinely creepy stories I've ever seen. An exception in a sea of supposedly 'scary' movies.

      @@ArgentLeftoversyeah, most of the media just shrugged their shoulders at it, but I loved it, although I had figured out what was going on very quickly it didn't ruin my appreciation of the movie itself. I can't point out any significant misstep in the direction, writing or acting. Good stuff.

    "Dumb" is indeed a word for being unable or unwilling to speak.
    One of THE best haunted house movies ever!
    Thanks for your reaction.

    • @maxhall2086
      @maxhall2086 Месяц назад +1

      I would clarify that the word is considered antiquated and offensive if used in that sense today. The modern way to refer to someone who doesn't/can't speak is "non-verbal", with "mute" used previously also, although never as a slur.

    • @DavidMacDowellBlue
      @DavidMacDowellBlue Месяц назад

      @@maxhall2086 True enough. It can be a problem for writing period pieces. I wrote a play set in 2007 and someone on the autism spectrum was said to have "Asperger's Syndrome" which is not how she would be described today. But the fact that someone (her mother) does not really understand her condition is an important part of the plot. But another play set circa 1840 a character called a group of people "gypsies" and there was simply nothing else anyone would historically call them. But the character speaking was making a point about how they are being oppressed, So context is pretty much everything. People sometimes have strange (or at least unexpected) reactions to certain words. I wrote a play about Abraham Lincoln's son, Robert, and I nearly always got complaints he would not have been called "Bob" because it was "too modern." Which is absurd because absolutely EVERYONE in real life called this man Bob.
      Thanks for letting me flap my mouth. Language is powerful. I myself think I would have used the word "mute" had I written this screenplay.

    When Grace asks when Lydia went "dumb" she does not mean Lydia is stupid or anything. "Dumb" in this context is an anachronism for the term mute. I do not know if you have ever heard someone say that something "struck them dumb". It means that something shocked them speechless.

  • @dravenheissel
    @dravenheissel 7 месяцев назад +12

    Fun facts:
    14:54 The person in the painting is a Spanish actor named Eduardo Noriega.
    Nicole Kidman's work as Grace was widely praised, receiving nominations for the industry's most important awards, such as the Golden Globe. However, she was never 100% convinced of making the film. At first, she tried to persuade Amenábar and the production company to look for another actress, since her character was very dark for her, especially after making a film like "Moulin Rouge!". Even during rehearsals, Kidman quit a couple of times due to the nightmares that playing this role caused her. In the end, she managed to overcome her fears and gave us an amazing performance.
    When Nicole Kidman is looking at the photos of the dead, in the group of three men, the one on the right (with a mustache) is the director of the film Alejandro Amenábar and his two roommates at the time.
    In the dress scene, Alakina Mann, who played Anne, didn't want to wear it because she didn't like it, so Amenábar wore one just like it to convince her.
    Although the final twist may seem like a copy of "The Sixth Sense", Amenábar began writing the script for this film before Shyamalan's film was released.
    Amenábar did not speak English at that time, therefore, the film's script was written in Spanish and later translated into English.
    Originally, the story of the film would take place in southern Chile. However, once Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman got involved in the project, all things changed. Cruise made the decision to be one of the producers, after seeing "Abre los ojos" the previous film of Amenábar (in whose remake, "Vanilla Sky", he was the main character. In spanish version, the main character was performed by Eduardo Noriega, the one in the painting). That made the film be shot in English and have another context. Amenábar did not know how to speak English, as I have already said, at that time, so he took intensive classes to be able to carry out the project.
    "The Others" was also the last collaboration between Cruise and Kidman, since two days before the film was released, both actors signed their divorce.

    Grace's scream right at the beginning is not an ordinary nightmare. It's the realisation of what she has done to her children and herself.
    Also the scene where Grace is loading the shotgun for the first time, she can be seen pausing in a recollective moment after she slams the breach shut. This is most likely due to her faint realization of déja vu , most likely alluding to her suicide by using the same gun. It is subtle, but noticeable!

Nicole kidman was just gorgeous. I still feel sorry for jimmy fallon and that missed opportunity. This is a suspense film, not a jump scare film. Lazy movie makers depend too much on SFX & jump scares & not enough on exquisite writing & acting.
    What was unsaid about the husband was that he found his way home to say goodbye to family who'd be unable to perceive him, & he was horrified that they were dead, too! Anna told him her memory or how, while not comprehending that she was dead.
    My head cannon is that he's on one of those haunted battlefields where you can hear the long ago fighting.
    And yes, until the 50s or 60s, dumb was a way to say mute. Then it was deemed offensive, & the meaning changed.

    Masterclass in how to make a creepy movie for grownups. It does not have to be gory if there is a solid script and great action. Very sophisticated, not what we think of when we say horror. Actually, the German occupation of the Channel Islands started out OK. The Germans got along with the Islanders, and many children were sent to relatives elsewhere. But then there was a blockade, and nothing got in or out -- starvation and violence followed, on both sides. The living conditions could have caused her to kill the children. Great reaction, by the way :)

    Interestingly enough there is a condition called Xeroderma pigmentosum that is similar to what the mother said was wrong with the kids. As usual it got all hollywooded up to make ti way more extreme than it is in reality, but essentially, they got the basic concept of the condition right. It's the rapidity with which the blemishes and cancer will start to show that they exaggerated. And they left out the long term neurological damage that it can cause.

    i feel this is how La Llorona should have been filmed, not the bs they did with the 2019.. over explained with unnecessary lore that had nothing to do with the real story.. this is a great film tho, that twist is always good for new reactors

    From this director, I strongly recommend "Thesis" (1996), his debut....... (Is it hypocrate on my behalf to promote spaniards directors? Bah, who cares? I should also say "El día de la Bestia" by Alex de la Iglesia, but somehow, I know you ain't going to like it)

    I’ve been trying to turn all you movie reviewers to watch the 1963 movie the haunting. No monsters or ghosts just mood music and lighting. The hairs on the back of your neck will be up the whole time.

    An older movie with a similar title, "The Other" (1972), directed by Robert Mulligan of "To Kill a Mockingbird" fame, also has a similar premise, about a family with a pair of twins who aren't what they seem to be.

    You seemed a little bewildered about the
    Mother chastising kids about laughter at the religious story. You never had religious instruction in catholic school. They used to beat the religion into you in the old days. And it took me 40 years to get back into religion because the Catholic school bullshit.

    "...they're children..."
    ... Yeah? And? That's what their religion says happens. If it's true, shouldn't she be warning them about it as early as possible? Remember, children _can_ die, and without that warning, if the religion is true, they'll be tormented for it.
    Sure, some more moderate versions of Christianity teach that they won't be tormented if they're so young, but... that's not actually in the bible, that's just a response to the seeming unfairness if that isn't the case, and so people _made up_ extra stuff based on the idea that God is entirely fair and thus wouldn't do that.
    "...there's something about this house... is it haunted..."
    Yes. ... :)
    "...is that what they said about mute people back in the day..."
    'Deaf, dumb, and blind'. Can't hear, can't speak, can't see. In fact if you look up the word 'dumb' in most dictionaries, it mentions this definition. The association with a lack of intelligence comes from it being applied to animals. 'Dumb animals' doesn't mean they aren't smart, it means they can't speak.
    These days, it's considered offensive.
    "...they are the ghosts..."
    It was fun seeing your reaction to that.
    "...this was all a seance..."
    Aaaand... watching _this_ realization hit was awesome, too. :)
    "...the movie itself wasn't really scary..."
    What this movie excelled at was building tension. The fear was all of your own production, rather than what was shown. That, too, can be scary. It's how it works in real life most of the time. Rather than having a scary thing _actually_ happen to you, you're in a situation where you are less certain, less comfortable, and so your mind conjures threats where there are none. This is a useful survival tactic, not really great for reasoning.
    Have a nice day!
