Rusted Tiny Vise - Perfect Restoration

  • Restoration of a very rusty small Vise, in this video I will restore rusty Vise that was found by my friend with a metal detector in old village, their condition is very bad, all is Deadlocked all screws are rusted and two of them missing, so I used my old good Firm Lathe, you will also see how to make screw (round screws) from standard ones, steel spring is broken so I make a new one spring from piece of car leaf spring, some parts are rusted thru like thread on clamping mechanism so I cut off rusty part and weld new one, removed all the pins and totally disassembled all parts, locking mechanism was taken from the old broken vices and restored, a kind of mini restoration came out. This vise consists of two parts which are fixed by screws, you will see this in video, one has little anvil. I polished all the particles by using different sandpaper to a mirror finish.
It was not easy to make an 16 minute video with that many little things and to show almost all the restoration process and tricks I was using. At first I thought I would finish this project in a few days, but when started - realized how I was wrong, when my girl saw me all in the dust and rust, she barely recognized me :) Also I argued with a friend that would make them as new in what he did not believe. This restoration lasted 2 weeks, I made a lot of effort to make them shine the work was precise and accurate. I was impressed with the end result and pleased with this project.
I hope you will like my work and the video if so then put the likes, write your comments and do not forget to Subscribe :)

I usually don't like a restoration when there is no trace of history left. But in this case, the master actually made the product anew and he did the right thing. Great job

Thanks for such feedback, yes i know some people like to restore things to avoid damage to authenticity and history, some just to remove all, i like both restorations, i can do mirror or leave historical gloss, it depends on the condition and historical value of the item, first of all i want people enjoy watching, the main thing for me is that it brings them a positive and good mood, that's what my channel content is aimed at :)

Yeah I agree with you bro. maybe label each video I wouldn’t call this restoration but maybe 🤔 renovation or possible a remodel because restoration is typically restoring it to the original look and design to keep with the authenticity of the products history. But I like what u did I wish u would try something else besides mirror finish on everything I mean it’s awesome but can get old. Why not gun metal grey or Damascus or diamond chiseled finish where it looks almost black and chrome mirror finish kind of but u would Typically see it on the older hair cutting scissors or even the older sheet metal shears would also sometimes have that look also older cast iron products would sometimes have those black dots almost looked like pots in the finish but on it and around would be a nice mirror finish on the outside just a thought it’s your channel and I do enjoy ur channel I wish I could learn how to do this stuff it keeps my attention I’ve always wanted to try to make a sword a real handmade katana or something but just the whole blacksmith work and wood work is something I’ve always been interested in, my dad used to do this kind of stuff he died before I could really learn very much tho

I’ve seen some pretty crazy restorations, but with how deep that rust goes and how clean you got it. That’s extremely impressive in my book

Spray silicone is not a very good penetrant. You can see that as the screws come out the threads are dry. No silicone got inside the thread surfaces.
Better to use a thin penetrating oil designed for thread release and a bit of physical tapping to shock the rust's grip on the threads.
If even that all fails, heat along with penetrating oil always seems to work if safe.

All of the restoration experts out there need to watch this video to learn how it's really done. It's the pits most don't know how to deal with. They paint or bondo when all you really have to do is grind them out. Guess it never occurred to them.

How some of those threaded portions didn’t shear off when dismantling is a miracle. I would have soaked that bastard in vinegar for a week. Loved the outcome though. A man after my own heart, I polish the hell out of my restorations too.
    Beautiful outcome. 👍🇦🇺

Almost correct :) i named my channel Almost Perfect Restoration because in this world nothing is really perfect, even if it is shining like a diamond, for 100 people it will be perfect and for 1 will not, so here is some philosophy in that :) and im not leaving any rust there they are really mirror... :D
