Considering I've met Alex twice before in person, he is a VERY nice guy. He came into where I worked to buy 2 light bulbs and when I realized who he was, he thought it was cool. I was 20 at the time (23 now) and he thought it was really cool that younger generations were such interested in Rush. Talked to him for a good 15-20 minutes about music and he went on his way. He is NOT a dickwad like most people would expect of a normal rockstar.

As would mine…although I think you and I would be smart enough NOT to yell things at Alex (or even Ged or Neil) such as “YOUR WIFE IS SO LUCKY!” like the woman he popped off at was doing…absolutely disgusting behavior on her part.
This video should be called "Alex gets even more awesome." You can hear her hollering stupid stuff, but he played a beautiful solo and didn't miss a lick, PLUS he *very nicely* BEGGED her to "stop. PLEASE stop!" I don't know if she was distracting or if he was afraid she was going to slosh beer on his axe and gear, but he handled it VERY well.
Here's a little experiment for those of you capturing video with your phones. Hold your phone in your hand. Now look at your TV set. Do the two look like they're standing in the same way? If not, TURN YOUR PHONE 90 DEGREES!!!!! It's not hard people, really.
A follow-up experiment will confirm these results. Look in the mirror. Notice that your eyes are side-by-side. Align your phone that way as well when taking videos.
@Shallex Wrong. Our field of view is wider horizontally than it is vertically. This is the reason why cinema and TV are shot in a landscape orientation.
I was like, "hmmm lets see if i can find where alex gets mad" but then i was like "i actually love this song and the intro so i think ill watch the whole thing"
If you consider the jazz/funk/rock fusion guys from the 70's, then I strongly disagree. IMO, Tower of Power was as good if not considerably better. Having said that, "the best musician" is very subjective.
Let's clear this up right now. When he says stop please stop, it has nothing to do with the person filming...most likely if you look at his eyes they are going the opposite direction of where the phone is and he is probably trying to get a drunk man to stop fussing at his wife... Alex deserves credit for that
Think about it this way....he's security at a show where it's guaranteed that there won't be any problems. Even though it's insane anyone wouldn't like them, for some reason people don't.
***** no sir,he is not at all like that. he is very intense when he plays, they all are. if you were ever too see them live,,they play 2 1/2 too 3 hours,,,no opening band ,,,at least the times i saw them,,,and very little talking if any between songs. you could not find a better performance, and ive been too many,,,great guys if you see them live. z28 watch tom sawyer featuring southpark on youtube and watch Alex, you get too see him at his normal ways,,,cutting up.
hahahah sorry about that friend,,i misread the comment. yeah i agree with you, security guard looks like he has a bad case of pms,,,id be down there enjoying my front row seat lol
Alex. Class act. Rush... greatest act. This music has a message for each and everyone of us. THESE THREE ARE NOT OF THIS TIME. they are from a place they know we can be. closer to the heart.
Was somebody heckling him? That's never cool. I don't care if you're playing raw acoustic for three dudes at the local dive bar or a Carnival parade with 100,000 fans screaming their demands for your induction to the Hall of Fame. It's never fun to be heckled, have your practiced performance interrupted, and have one asshole mess things up for the 99.99% of people who paid to actually come enjoy the show.
From what’s been reported here in the comments by fellow fans who were there, a lady was trying to push her way toward the front, and was yelling things at Alex (you can hear her even in the beginning of the clip) such as “YOUR WIFE IS SO LUCKY…!” Finally, at one point, as we saw, he’d had enough, and yelled back at her “STOP…PLEASE STOP…!” Sincerely doubt that was the reaction she was hoping to get, but she should know better than to yell things that are likely gonna make him uncomfortable when he’s up there trying to do his job.
Unless you are so close up on the subject that they are cut off in the horizontal framing no matter how far out you are zoomed and your goal is to capture just that single person... turns out, when a human is standing, they are vertically shaped.
i fuckin love that intro alex plays b4 closer to the heart its just so amazing and when i heard it live 2 years ago i was blown away. I think alex is one of the best guitarists on this planet. Cant wait to see them october 20 in new jersey for there tour for the new album!!!!!!
I heard some comments about Geddy's voice and. yeah, especially in Arf40, Geddy's voice is starting to go. There's nothing we can do about it. But what the vocals lack they make up for 10X in musicianship. I have never seen a band with just 3 guys make so much genuine music. And the relationship between the 3, Alex and Geddy especially. Their goofiness on stage has stayed true all these years. These are best friends doing what they love well into their 60's. I'm sad to see them retire but I would rather they retire on a high note then to drag a horse through the mud. When the time is right, it's right.
Everyone has a great point about Alex telling this drunk to "Stop It". I'm a huge fan of Alex Lifeson and Steve Howe. I don't think Alex Lifeson gets as angry as Steve Howe does here during his acoustic guitar solo.ruclips.net/video/Dr7ksErZedw/видео.html People get too rowdy at concerts especially when they drink beer but I don't blame Alex because he sees something that just isn't right. Steve Howe really has a good reason during his guitar solo because some guy has the nerve to talk during his performance. Fans pay hundreds on hard earned dollars to hear their idols. If people want to talk. Go outside of the venue.
I'm going to buy his signature epiphone guitar it's a shame he didn't include a picture of him or a certificate of authenticity. But it is a very beautiful guitar for the price and it has all the stuff that his Gibson's has just not as expensive.
I doubt it was the girl yelling. He has in-ear monitors. He can't hear anything other than himself and the band. During breaks Ged will hear the crowd because of ambient mics but he's the only one.
yngvaigilbsteen not while he's playing. Why would the ambient mics be on while they're playing? They want to hear the crowd yelling while they're playing? No. That's not what happens. The side mix will turn them on and off.
Everyone is different. Many people like the ambient mics on at all times to provide "space" in the IEM's. Especially guitar players. Personally, I don't like ambient mics specifically for that reason, but I'm actually the odd one, in that case.
Remember you can't replace vocal cords after every show like you can guitar strings, so let's ease up on Geddy, think of all the singing he has done for decades, eventually your vocal cords wear out!
I don’t see Alex being mad. I see him being intense on playing as part well. The only reason he be mad would be used for the fact that this video was shot in portrait instead of landscape. Never a video in portrait. That’s like rule number three in photography and filming.
I was thinking "he's going to get mad at that chick"...you know the one that's yelling at the beginning. I guess he got slightly annoyed at....something. Great performance.
Chumlee Dammet I agree with you both. *if* Alex was getting angry (it takes a LOT to do that) it would be at the... drunk (?) (just stupid) (?) Woman yelling during the quiet acoustic part. We the audience of this video are hearing what was closest to the person recording this... we don't see what Alex saw nor heard, so it is still up in the air.
Echdrum Does it really take a lot to get him angry? He freaked out at a Ritz Carlton in Florida one year all drunk and made that the house band didn't want him on the stage. And when I saw him in Boston on this same tour he got mad there too because of a sound misfunction.
Are you referring to the incident where he got arrested for defending his son from police brutality? That makes him look like good father. If he's playing to 20k people, he takes it seriously, and if he can't hear himself than he's risking sounding bad and not giving the fans their moneys worth. He is not a guy with an anger problem that you seem to believe he is and its pretty well known that he's incredibly nice and a comedian off stage.
"stop please stop" that girl was acting stupid yelling during quiet stuff. Sometimes the audience things it's all about them. Not the music. It's about the music people. Shut up and listen!
If Alex, Neil, and Geddy were just tuning their instruments they would still be better than 99% of all bands!!!!!! The greatest rock band ever and the worlds smallest and greatest philharmonic orchestra ever!!!!!!
I was at that concert. Saw Taylor Hawkins in the line getting beer. I asked him why he was in line, and he said that he found it easier to get beer in line than back stage. True story. I didn't really know what his name was, but someone in line said, "There's the Foo Fighter's Drummer." He was right in front of me. He was super nice, and had a big smile on his face. Must have been in heaven at a Rush concert.
I was at a RUSH show at the Long Beach Arena back in the early 80's when Geddy stopped the show because someone had light an M80 or some loud firecracker. He said if it happens again they will end the show. No more firecrackers were lite the rest of the night, thank goodness.
So pretentious... He was pissed about the volume in his ear monitors going up and down because of the new guy learning the mix. He was motioning to the board to knock it off... not to the person next to you. Notice he isn't looking down.
Um... Nope. No one knows unless they happened to have been there, and saw what he was talking about, or unless they're the person, or persons he was talking to.
And they prove that sex isn't all there is to life. They don't worship it like we do, along with youth, and greed. I would be proud to have friends like them. They are good guys. And incredibly gifted with a talent they truly love. You don't see them burning out, and splitting up, and having to get their abilities out of a bottle of Jack Daniels or dropping acid or any kind of drugs. They are just born talented. They were raised right and are raising their kids right. They are the ultimate cool!
Alex Lifeson has a lot of class, Im sure he was just trying to keep someone else from ruining the show for other people. I never got to go to a Rush concert but have always wanted to. Im sure its a lot of fun. I never find out they're coming to Columbus until it's already said and done and over with.
I dont know what the fuck about it. If she was just drunk and yell some stupid things its not a big deal to me. Nothing is perfect, well glad he is dont stop the performance.
ouch...Geddy is a freakin god...but man, he really has to tone down the attempts at vocal acrobatics...that was really kinda painful to listen to. (not the first time either) I can hardly wait till he finds a new band, and focuses on playing (not so much singing) once Rush finally get's put out to pasture, and only trotted out for grossly over-priced "reunion gigs" at Massey Hall and Radio City Music Hall (etc)
Is it also bullshit that Peart admits that he can't play the great songs as well as he used to anymore? (and Lifeson obviously can't) Is it bullshit that this band is clearly tired, and probably going to retire after they make maybe one more tired album, with a guitarist (ie.band leader) who hasn't recorded a truly impressive gtr track in decades now? Peart is a monsterous living legend, and Geddy is still a god among men, who;s still pushing new musical limits - but unfortunately it's with a voice that's not really up to the job anymore.
Zac ReesesCup It's not really, so much arrogance. Rather the taking one tiny (infinitesimal) measure of Rush - with the same metrics and high standards that Peart has always professed, for years... and Lifeson supported (with great rhythmic washes and cool discordant solos), for years.... and Geddy actually sustained with his complete and utter mastery. Long past the most glorious and masterful years....for years, and years now. Seriously though...While trying to place all arrogance aside: What do you think the chances are that Rush stays out of doing studio recordings for awhile, and continues with periodic "R" tours from here on out? Seriously.
I don't expect them to keep touring and releasing albums, that's not what bothered me...i know its all opinion but what got to me were the comments about how lifeson and peart cant keep up and how you "cant wait for rush to disband" which even though its opinion, to a die hard rush fan like me, those words are treason
i once saw Steve Howe of Yes get so pissed at a fan in the Orpheum who, during his exquisite acoustic solo, shouted PLAY MOOD FOR A DAY!! i thought he was gonna throw his guitar at the guy. also saw Pat Metheny tell my friend who was way up in 3rd row to SHUT UP while he was playing a quiet acoustic piece! intoxicated fans shouldn't be allowed in to see musicians of such caliber...
There were some women talking very loud and yelling things to him while he started the song acoustic you can hear them, he shook his head at one point later he looked right at them and said stop please stop guess they were irritating .

Fantastic guitar playing Mr Lifeson sir! Beautiful sounding guitar! Most underrated guitarist ever.
Someone was air-drumming totally out of context; Alex shouts them out.
Here's a little experiment for those of you capturing video with your phones.
Hold your phone in your hand. Now look at your TV set. Do the two look like they're standing in the same way? If not, TURN YOUR PHONE 90 DEGREES!!!!!
It's not hard people, really.
+larzblast Friends don't let friends shoot vertical videos.
+mr7wi Amen.
jam your phone up your ass.
Best musicians in rock music. Bar none.
+Ilovewyatt01 The guys from Yes were better. Also, King Crimson and Gentle Giant
........No.
If you consider the jazz/funk/rock fusion guys from the 70's, then I strongly disagree. IMO, Tower of Power was as good if not considerably better.
Having said that, "the best musician" is very subjective.
yea, he's reinventing singing like a mortally wounded goat. Genius.
the drummer from Snarky Puppy makes this Canadian guy look like a novice.
Let's clear this up right now. When he says stop please stop, it has nothing to do with the person filming...most likely if you look at his eyes they are going the opposite direction of where the phone is and he is probably trying to get a drunk man to stop fussing at his wife... Alex deserves credit for that
This is honestly one of the funniest Alex Lifeson moments I've ever seen. He's so modest
3:57 That guy is all, "Man, I hate my life. I have to get paid to listen to Rush". PUT ON A SMILE. I'd take the position for free!
Think about it this way....he's security at a show where it's guaranteed that there won't be any problems. Even though it's insane anyone wouldn't like them, for some reason people don't.
Nice. I've seen them only 4 times but it's pretty much as you described, at it's worst.
***** no sir,he is not at all like that. he is very intense when he plays, they all are. if you were ever too see them live,,they play 2 1/2 too 3 hours,,,no opening band ,,,at least the times i saw them,,,and very little talking if any between songs. you could not find a better performance, and ive been too many,,,great guys if you see them live. z28 watch tom sawyer featuring southpark on youtube and watch Alex, you get too see him at his normal ways,,,cutting up.
kennyk1972 lol what? I'm not talking about Alex Lifeson! I'm talking about that security guy below him! Why do you think I said "that guy"?
hahahah sorry about that friend,,i misread the comment. yeah i agree with you, security guard looks like he has a bad case of pms,,,id be down there enjoying my front row seat lol
I think it was his Mom goin' "THAT'S MY SON UP THERE" ...
He says "STOP...PLEASE STOP"
Nothing like a real 12-string for that authentic Closer to the Heart intro sound. Magic music.
0:35 "Your wife is so lucky!" LOL
Alex. Class act. Rush... greatest act.
Yo!
People are so ignorant! Booze up and cause shit because they aren't the centre of attention!
If your're going to make Big Al mad, you deserve to be called out on RUclips. He's the master and we're all apprentices'
0:36 "Your wife is so lucky" I'm guessing she wouldn't give up.
Yeah, but she ain't telling him anything she doesn't already know😉
So Canadian, so typical Rush. He gets angry and uses "please" instead of an expletive. All class, all the time!
Horizontal filming > Vertical filming
Unless you are so close up on the subject that they are cut off in the horizontal framing no matter how far out you are zoomed and your goal is to capture just that single person... turns out, when a human is standing, they are vertically shaped.
4:3 >
He did say "please". What a nice guy!
i fuckin love that intro alex plays b4 closer to the heart its just so amazing and when i heard it live 2 years ago i was blown away. I think alex is one of the best guitarists on this planet. Cant wait to see them october 20 in new jersey for there tour for the new album!!!!!!
You can’t get better “seats” than those, eh? DAMN! Might as well be a personal show!
Motörhead was a tremendous 3 peice band as well that filled the room & made your ears bleed.
@@embassyhotel no comparison. Plus Head varied between 3 and 4 members
Rush always only had 3.
"Stop. Please, STOP!"
I'm not mad, it's just a frustrating song to play
Prove it
Well
I'm Alex's little misplaced brother and I think the chick was on a goofy pill eh?
wot m8?
This is how Canadians get mad
I'm going to buy his signature epiphone guitar it's a shame he didn't include a picture of him or a certificate of authenticity. But it is a very beautiful guitar for the price and it has all the stuff that his Gibson's has just not as expensive.
I doubt it was the girl yelling. He has in-ear monitors. He can't hear anything other than himself and the band. During breaks Ged will hear the crowd because of ambient mics but he's the only one.
They seem to all have the ambient mics and I believe Alex runs his pretty hot.
yngvaigilbsteen not while he's playing.
Ambient mics or ported IEMs. The kind I have are pretty effective at letting you hear the crowd.
Remember you can't replace vocal cords after every show like you can guitar strings, so let's ease up on Geddy, think of all the singing he has done for decades, eventually your vocal cords wear out!
Neil peart is a perfect drummer for RUSH!!!!!! Love his drumming!
I don’t see Alex being mad. I see him being intense on playing as part well. The only reason he be mad would be used for the fact that this video was shot in portrait instead of landscape. Never a video in portrait. That’s like rule number three in photography and filming.
Alex’s mad is still teddy bear.
This is the Canadian version of jumping off the stage into the crowd and smashing a beer bottle over her head
I was thinking "he's going to get mad at that chick"...you know the one that's yelling at the beginning. I guess he got slightly annoyed at....something. Great performance.
That's Canada, "just stop" is fury. Unless you're at a Hockey game.
I was actually commenting on him handling it rather well. he was obviously upset, yet he didn't get belligerent or rude. just told her to stop. :)
Well he didn't pull an Axl Rose and stage dive after the woman!!! lol
This is the Canadian equivalent of Axl jumping into the audience to beat the shit out of a fan
I was at this exact show. It. Was. AMAZING! :D
It seems like quite a delayed reaction if it was the girl screaming that got him upset. Maybe someone was holding up a sign? Also rip Neil :(
vertical vids ):(
Poor guy. I really want to meet him and ask him how the fuck he came up with La Villa Strangiato.
"Stawp, please stawp" Canadian English, eh.
Yes, clearly it was a-boat someone distracting him. 😉
-Sp00k- Front of house doesn't control monitor mixes. That would've been right off stage left... You were saying something about "pretentiousness?"
Um... Nope. No one knows unless they happened to have been there, and saw what he was talking about, or unless they're the person, or persons he was talking to.
Shut up, everybody! :D
Sound board in the front row? LMAO
Alex just needs to release a whole album of 12 string guitar
Take my $$
Alex is such a professional, even when he's upset with someone, he's still courteous and polite.
PLEASE STAWP lol
We all know Alex isn’t mean. He’s Canadian, how could he be 😊
At 1:05 is there a girl screaming or did Geddy start singing?
That was you pooping your pants! :D
LOL
Alex Lifeson has a lot of class, Im sure he was just trying to keep someone else from ruining the show for other people. I never got to go to a Rush concert but have always wanted to. Im sure its a lot of fun. I never find out they're coming to Columbus until it's already said and done and over with.
Is it just me or did his guitar keep strumming when his hand stopped? Hmmm.
When at in the video did you see that?
Very briefly, at 3:50, he mouths "please stop" and raises his right hand. The triplicate type strumming continues.
I'm not hearing it. Are you sure you aren't confusing it with the other instruments, or the effects?
Maybe
Jason Gregory Maybe it's a tremolo effect.
Passed up a chance to see Rush (several times), Queen and the Stones when they were young. Wtf was I thinking?
Rush would be a great band if only they had a better drummer.
If you can't drum better, don't insult him
Stingray-U If you can't understand humor, you should stay off RUclips.
Stingray-U wow.. really?
That made me mad as hell until I knew you were joking. ...fucking funny
There needs to be a font or something for sarcasm.
(not the first time either)
I can hardly wait till he finds a new band, and focuses on playing (not so much singing) once Rush finally get's put out to pasture, and only trotted out for grossly over-priced "reunion gigs" at Massey Hall and Radio City Music Hall (etc)
wow....just wow...bullshit
Is it also bullshit that Peart admits that he can't play the great songs as well as he used to anymore? (and Lifeson obviously can't)
Is it bullshit that this band is clearly tired, and probably going to retire after they make maybe one more tired album, with a guitarist (ie.band leader) who hasn't recorded a truly impressive gtr track in decades now?
Peart is a monsterous living legend, and Geddy is still a god among men, who;s still pushing new musical limits - but unfortunately it's with a voice that's not really up to the job anymore.
Jo Fergus i don't even know who to begin responding to the arrogance
Zac ReesesCup It's not really, so much arrogance.
Rather the taking one tiny (infinitesimal) measure of Rush - with the same metrics and high standards that Peart has always professed, for years... and Lifeson supported (with great rhythmic washes and cool discordant solos), for years.... and Geddy actually sustained with his complete and utter mastery. Long past the most glorious and masterful years....for years, and years now.
Seriously though...While trying to place all arrogance aside:
What do you think the chances are that Rush stays out of doing studio recordings for awhile, and continues with periodic "R" tours from here on out?
Actually, someone was torturing an elderly woman by hitting her on the head with a rubber chicken. That's why he was saying "Stop! Please stop!"
You know you’re a nightmare if you piss a guy like Alex Lifeson off! That guy is as laid back as they come!
That my friends is about as angry as a Canadian musician gets. 😉
There were some women talking very loud and yelling things to him while he started the song acoustic you can hear them, he shook his head at one point later he looked right at them and said stop please stop guess they were irritating .
